When I saw Greg Gunberg sitting in the command chair of the Yorktown I had to laugh - he is JJ's version of Rob Schneider, apparently.
"So, JJ - you working on anything? Rent's due.... so umm... if you got anything give me a holler"

I cheered and sang along. I loved it.
If I had heard of the Beastie Boys thing prior to seeing the film, I would have rolled my eyes so much thinking "ugh, these dumb nuTrek films", but with the way it was actually set up and executed I just rolled with it and has a big smile on my face "is that classical music?"

Such a surprising delight!

Just reading up on posts, I've realized that if anything, this movie shows something we probably already knew: "Star Trek" can entertain on almost any level of story. The characters fit in and work well whether it's TWOK or TVH, an epic story or a romp. A life-changing story or a place-holding one. As I've said before, I'd watch two hours of those folks at the supermarket buying groceries. (Just don't know if I'd pay $17 to see it in IMAX 3D.) The success of Trek is in the care with which the characters are handled. To me, that was STB's saving strength.

It was! Especially as it went along so nicely with Jaylah's "I like the beats and the shouting." :)

I'd heard a little of it and thought it was going to be strange, but when I saw it (I'd only heard a general background), I liked it.

Besides the fun of the music... that whole scene was amazing, especially the shots of the giant wave of Swarm ships in space. Wow.

Also, to those thinking that the music somehow 'blew up' the swarm ships' directly; it didn't. The Swarm was flying in close/tight/very controlled formation; and once that control was disrupted the ships started smashing into each other at high speeds - which caused damage, explosions, etc. that just cascaded through the mass of ships.

In my "head canon" the power of the Beastie Boys is what turned the tide. ;)

One thing that wasn't adequately explained: were those Swarm ships piloted by sentient "true believers" or were they mindless drones?

My feelings about BEYOND and the last two films could not by any more similar with theirs. They nailed exactly my thoughts and feelings regarding this film. It's so wonderful to feel positive about Trek again, especially, as they pointed out, in a very weak summer for blockbusters.

Just got home from a second viewing. Still an awesome movie.

Some thoughts:

What does Krall do if the Teenak had accepted the Abornath? Seems like Yorktown was some kind of command base for the Enterprise and was likely advised when Kirk was given it as a token to give to the Teenak.
Shouldn't the Enterprise have been cleared of collected artifacts to make room for when they went back out exploring?

Seems Star Trek Beyond has kept up Trek's long history of little to no security of sensitive areas.

At the end, I think I would've liked to have seen Kirk accept promotion, Spock head off to New Vulcan and the rest of the gang split up. Then have the beginning of '4' be about rounding them up.

My take was that the Abornath was - as far as Starfleet knew - a non functioning artifact, no more dangerous than the barrel of a Maxim gun.
