I do not love all of Star Trek equally. There are, in fact, large parts of it I do not like (the two most recent films do not fall into that category). But none of it offends me on any level such that I wish it did not exist, or resent the fans that it has.
All of that is pretty basic, "duh", kinda stuff but after reading this thread I felt like I needed to say it. I hope this new series is good and fun to watch. If it is I will be happy. If it is not, life goes on. I'm still probably more excited for more new movies at this point, but that is because I know that I like that cast and group of characters, whereas this is still a complete unknown. Which is exciting, but nothing that can be analyzed or critiqued at this point in time.
Why would the Vulcans be racing the Federation? That's like California competing against the USA.
I imagine it would be Vulcan refugees wanting to restore their planet, in contravention of the Federation Council's wish to keep the time travel device from being used nefariously, recklessly, or at all. Just as an example.
Could allusions be so vague as to apply to either Prime or JJTrek?
The official notice has this comment:
I seriously doubt they would make a *third* universe for this new series. The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.
I could see them doing what they did to relaunch Doctor Who back in 2005, a "soft reboot" of sorts, where they just started telling stories with only vague allusions to the previous TV series, until they they had solidified their story telling and then brought the old and new together.

Open their minds to what? Poor plotting, vapid characters, fan winks, rehashes of villains revenge plots, nonsense science and Earth set plots?
Isn't current Dr. Who something along those lines? They recognize parts of the Dr. Who mythology without acknowledging specifics?

Ah, so I wasn't totally mistaken.Isn't current Dr. Who something along those lines? They recognize parts of the Dr. Who mythology without acknowledging specifics?
That's how it was when it started, but it's changed since then. But it was always meant to be canon with the original series.
I think this new show is just a tool to lure subscribers. Until proven otherwise, I'll stick with my dvds of the first 5 shows!
