Trek Returning to TV in 2017!

One can't truly call one's self a fan unless they show psychotic rage over the merest hint of something being new and different.
QFT.

Man, I tried to read the whole thread, but page after page after page of relentless bitching has a dispiriting effect. :weep:

I'm glad new TV Trek is coming, and I hope it will be great. With the development in TV story telling and production techniques in the last few years, I'm hoping this will be modern, new Star Trek.

I'm sure we'll see a well-developed arc plot, something Trek has never quite done before. I expect there'll be a few different locations involved:
-A deep space station serving as a hub for missions and diplomacy.
-There should also be a large starship on an important mission (with a few side quests).
-Maybe a third thread about some sort of scientific quest (long term observation of a strange planet; deep diving into a black hole).

Hopefully not too many characters/threads, and hopefully many memorable new characters.

Period will probably be between TOS and TNG. There will be some interesting new aliens, and a cool emerging threat. It will be the JJ-verse of course, but in this period you won't really be able to tell. My only fan-wish is that they find a way to magic Vulcan back into existence.

For some reason, I am imagining the show having a very autumnal look, like the first part of GEN.

I don't want the show to look like it was made in the 1990s/1980s/1970s/1960s. I want it to look and feel new. My nephews will be in their early teens when this comes out, and I want this show to grab them and make them say "Star Trek is awesome!"
Both of these.... QFT!
I'm not overly concerned about Vulcan's existence or lack thereof. It might make for some good side story on tv that movies might not be able to devote much time to.

Either way.... Bring it on!!!!!! :)

So let me review the situation for a moment to make sure I got everything right. As of this moment, we know pretty much nothing about this show except Alex Kurtzman is involved, and it's set to premiere on CBS's streaming service in 2017, and it will involve a new cast. That's it, nothing about which era or timeline it will be set in. And in less than twelve hours this has generated a thread of nearly thirty pages? We truly are a starved lot, aren't we?

Okay, so serious question, even though this will air on the CBS streaming service, it will eventually make its way to something like Netflix or even DVD/Blu-ray (if such things are still around in a couple years) right?

I give up.

Strawmen are apparently more interesting than what's actually represented.

Why is it so hard to admit that there are more people looking forward to this -- or are reserving judgment -- than you want to believe? Rhetorical question. No need to answer.

Not everyone's some raving lunatic. And not everyone who has a negative opinion is a raving lunatic either. Some of them aren't even complaining about the idea of a new series itself so much as having to pay for it. It makes no difference to me. I already pay for new programming through Amazon, but I'm not going to go around trying to shame people for having an opinion that's different from mine.

The trouble with going further into the future is the risk of tech paralysis. Technology becomes so advanced you have to make more and more excuses for it not to break the plot.

Writers break plots, not technology. They should use the advanced tech as a challenge to up their game, not as an excuse for failure.

If they did go into the future I'd love it if they started exploring other galaxies with more non-humanoid life is dominant.

The recent discoveries of the Kepler Space telescope have led astronomers to estimate that the number of potentially habitable planets in the Milky Way is in the tens of millions. There are still plenty of opportunities in this galaxy.

The problem with the non-humanoid aliens has always been about practicality and budget. Hopefully modern CGI advancements and access will help change this somewhat, but I'm not holding my breath.

I don't know. Dare I dream of a future, only a year and a half from now, where there will be both a good new Star Wars movie and a good new Star Trek episode debuting within a week of each other?

Finally. Hope!

Deep Space Voyager the Next Generation

An epic multi-POV, arc based series in the mode of Game of Thrones.

  • Deep Space Nine- Formerly an orbital Cardassian ore processing station, the Bajoran Provisional Government has turned it over to Starfleet to serve as the base of operations for the defense and exploration of the Bajor Sector and beyond. In addition to Starfleet and the Bajoran Militia, there is a large civilian population on the station that includes Bajorans, Starfleet dependants and other foreign nationals.
    • Commodore Benjamin Sisko- Starfleet Commander for the Bajoran Sector. Sisko is veteran of the Cardassian Wars. His wife, Jennifer and son, Jake live with him on DS9, but he has misgivings about them being so close to the Cardassian border.
Lt. Commander Tuvok- Starfleet Intelligence. Tuvok oversees various on ongoing SI operations in the sector. Some of which might be above Sisko's "pay grade".
    • Commander Katherine Pulaski- Chief Medical Officer. A veteran officer with strong opinions, she's often a thorn in the side of Sisko and his unofficial conscience. She's also fond of needling Tuvok and has a low opinion of "spies".
    • Lt. .Commander Data- Chief Operations Officer. An android. Data is in charge of keeping the station running. Given its blend of Federation. Cardassian and Bajoran technology it a task that keeps Data busy around the clock. Not needing sleep he is well suited for the task. As an android wishing to become more "human" Tuvok finds him fascinating.
    • Colonel Kira Nerys- Bajoran Liaison Officer. Kira was a member of the Bajoran Resistance during the Cardassian Occupation. She is still wanted in the Cardassian Union for terrorism. She coordinates activities that involve Starfleet and the Bajoran Militia.
    • Constable Odo- Chief of Law Enforcement for the station. A shapeshifter of unknown origin, Odo was raised on the station by Bajorans. He is strongly attached to the station and sees it as his only home. While nominally in charge of civilian law enforcement, Sisko likes to use Odo for Starfleet related operations as well.
    • Quark- A Ferengi merchant who runs a casino on DS9's promenade. He is also heavily involved in various criminal activities in the sector. As such, he and Odo have an adversarial relationship.
    • Garak- A Cardassian tailor who runs a shop on the promenade. He is the only Cardassian still on the station. His reasons for staying are currently a mystery. Though Tuvok certainly has a few ideas.
    • Dukat - A Gul in the Cardassian military. Dukat is the former Prefect of Bajor and presided over the transition from the Cardassian Union to the Bajoran Provisional Government. Currently he is the military commander for the Cardassian territory adjacent to the Bajor Sector. He would very much like to be Prefect of Bajor again.
  • The USS Enterprise- A Galaxy class vessel, the Enterprise is the newest and most advanced ship in Starfleet. It's primary mission is establishing diplomatic relations with the new worlds beyond Bajor. It's staff includes a large diplomatic team.
    • Captain Jean-Luc Picard- The ship's Commanding Officer. Picard is a man weary of war. The prospect of commanding a mission of exploration and diplomacy has kept him Starfleet. He sees a new war on the horizon and is making every effort to change course.
    • Lt. Commander Chakotay- The ship's Executive Officer. Chakotay's homeworld was on the frontlines of the Cardassian Wars and now lies in Cardassian territory. He's not happy being a ship who's main objective is to "make nice" with the Cardassians.
    • Ambassador Deanna Troi- The sector's Chief Diplomatic Officer, she divides her time between DS9 and the Enterprise. As a civilian, she's not always greeted with open arms by Starfleet. Her goals are often at odds with Commodore Sisko's, the sector's military commander. Picard is more open minded and she prefers the Enterprise to DS9
[*]Lt. B'Elanna Torres- The ship's Chief Engineering Officer. She served with Chakotay in the Cardassian Wars and shares his views on making peace with them.
    • Lt. Commander Beverly Crusher - The ship's Chief Medical Officer. The widow of Jack Crusher, Picard's former XO and closest friend. Her son is in Starfleet and she worries about his future.
    • Ensign Ro Laren- The ship's Flight Control Officer. Born in a Bajoran refugee camp she's never been to Bajor before this assignment. She's at odds with native born Bajorans, who see the refugees as cowards who chose to flee rather than fight
  • The USS Defiant- A Defiant class light cruiser. Its primary mission is defense of the station and the Bajor system. It serves as the flagship for the commander of DS9.The Defiant is a warship, part of the legacy of the Cardassian Wars. It's crew is small and most are experienced combat officers.
    • Commander William T. Riker- The Defiant's Commanding Officer. Riker comes across as a genial sort, quick with a joke and a twinkle in his eye. He's also known to have an eye for the ladies. In a combat situation he's all business, though. A clever commander with a trick or two up his sleeve.
    • Lt. Commander Elizabeth Shelby- The ship's Executive Officer. She's all business, all the time and isn't afraid to speak her mind if she thinks Riker ( or anyone else) is wrong. She has high standards and if she had her way the crew would be drilling around the clock.
    • Lt. Worf- The ship's tactical officer. On a ship the size of the Defiant, tactical includes flight control. He respects Riker and admires Shelby.
    • EMH- Experimental Medical Hologram. A new technology currently being tested on the Defiant. It's inventor, Dr. Louis Zimmerman is on board overseeing the test. (or is he?)
    • Lt. Ezri Tigan- Medical Officer. Tigan is Combat Field Medic and provides backup for the EMH. An unjoined Trill, who's not on the candidate list, she lives life to the fullest.
    • Lt. Geordi La Forge- The ship's Chief Engineering Officer. Blinded in the Cardassian War, La Forge can interface with the ship's systems through his VISOR, a device that enables him to see. As such he feels and senses what the ship does. At times this seems to cut him off from his crewmates and he wonders if he is losing his humanity.
    • Ensign Harry Kim- Operations Officer. A rookie right out of the academy he's in awe of these "heroes".
  • The USS Voyager- An Intrepid class scout ship. It primary mission is science and exploration. Most of its crew are in the Science division and the rest is comprised of young officers, some just out of the Academy. Because of this, the ship has been nicknamed "The School Bus". Voyager spends most of its time away from the Bajor Sector in unexplored territory.
    • Commander Kathryn Janeway- The ship's Commanding Officer. Formerly in the Science Division, this is Janeway's first command. For her the thrill of the "hunt" is what drives her. She needs to know what's behind the next nebula and beyond the farthest star.
    • Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax- The ship's Executive Officer and Chief Science Officer. A joined Trill, Dax can call upon decades of experience from her previous hosts. Which is at odds with her youthful appearance. A close friend of Sisko in her previous host, he still calls her "The Old Man". A name that followed her to Voyager.
    • Chief Petty Officer Miles O'Brien- The ship's Chief Engineer. The real old man aboard the ship, he has a decade on most of the crew. A veteran of the Cardassian Wars, He's one of Janeway's trusted advisors and a father figure to the younger crewmen. (Just don't tell him that). His wife, Keiko, lives on DS9.
    • Lt. Julian Bashir- The ship's Chief Medical Officer. Young, inexperienced and on his first deep space mission, Bashir is out of his element and tries to cover it up with bravado. O'Brien has taken him under his wing.
    • Ensign Wesley Crusher- Operations Officer. A gifted young man, Crusher completed Starfleet Academy in record time. He's the youngest member of the crew and very aware of this As such he is over eager to prove himself. His mother is the CMO on the Enterprise.
    • Lt. Tasha Yar- The Ship's Chief Security Officer. Growing up as an orphan on failed colony where every day was a fight for survival, Yar feels out of place on a ship full of scientists and overachievers.
    • Lt. Tom Paris- Flight Control Officer. Paris is onboard the Voyager as a favor to Admiral Owen Paris, Janeway's former CO. Paris has been a disciplinary problem (and embarrassment to his father) in the past. Voyager is his "last chance".[/QUOTE]
Assuming you're being in earnest, I only have one question. I do like the mash-up of characters that would have a good chance of creating interesting new dynamics that might expand the development of some of them (Voyager) that were stymied in their original iteration.

So, other than the fact that I think that the show will be set in the Nuverse as that sounds viable vis-a vis property rights, here is my question on your proposal.
How? Do you think that anywhere near a sufficient amount of dukats would be made available to carry off even a significantly truncated version of your vision? Such an investment would imply that CBS has pretty extraordinary anticipations of success, the issue of it being streamed only in the domestic market for the first season notwithstanding.

However, if you were just joshing, than just chalk these comments to my overly naïve sense of credulity.

...in less than twelve hours this has generated a thread of nearly thirty pages? We truly are a starved lot, aren't we?

Yes, Wormhole. Yes we are.

Okay, so serious question, even though this will air on the CBS streaming service, it will eventually make its way to something like Netflix or even DVD/Blu-ray (if such things are still around in a couple years) right?

One can only assume. I, for one, have no problem paying for CBS Streaming to get the new show. I switched to a streaming-only media intake method years ago, so I don't even have cable anymore.

The only thing that pisses me off is when a service wants to charge, and still force commercials (like Hulu). Sorry, but that's bullshit. You can't have your cake and charge me for it too.

I don't know if this is what CBS is planning, but I'll gladly pay a few bucks to have on-demand, no-interruption new (not nu) Trek.

If Kurtzman is involved I can only assume this is going to be set in the Abrams timeline, somehow. Since we know almost nothing about the premise, the only thing I can say at this point is I hope it is good, and that they don't try to remake the other franchises (IE TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT).

I also actually hope they create a new crew and ship for this series.

From all the reviews I have seen about CBS All Access, they are apparently worse for ads then Hulu is.

No, you can't reference it at all. It doesn't matter how crafty it is. The second they even hint at the possibility of being int he same universe, paramount will slap them down quicker than you can blink.

Abramsverse is proprietary. That's everything within the abramsverse, not just the actors portraying the characters. I can't go make a Peter Pan movie, and make sly references to Spielbergs Hook, without them coming down hard on me. From marketing to the finished product. They'll either slap an injunction on me probably, or force me to pay royalties. That's how copyrights work.
No, actually, it's not. It's the way many people think copyrights work. But it's not true.

A copyright is a very specific type of protection for a very specific thing. You can't copyright an idea, a concept, a theme, a setting, even a character. You can't even copyright a basic plot. When that plot becomes a fully fleshed out story, yes, you can copyright that. But the "universe" that the movie is set in, or the fact that it takes place in an alternate timeline created by red mater? Not a chance.

You can't even copyright character names like Kirk, Spock, McCoy, etc. Those can be protected as trademarks, but not copyrighted. But, then again, CBS already owns those trademarks and is licensing them to Paramount, so that point is moot.

Bottom line: Unless CBS has a specific agreement in place with Paramount regarding the Abramsverse, they can make a Trek series set in that universe any time they like.

Agreed. I'll tolerate a remake, and I'll tolerate a spin off, but I won't tolerate a remake of a spin off. Nothing screams creative bankruptcy louder than that.

I'm not overly concerned about Vulcan's existence or lack thereof. It might make for some good side story on tv that movies might not be able to devote much time to.

I recall various genre stories using the multiverse as a way to bring back destroyed planets. I can see it as a season 2 arc, a growing cluster of anomalies that culminates with a new Vulcan entering our universe from an alternate dimension.

For me, it's a practical concern. Since I'm outside the US I can't subscribe to the CBS streaming service. I'll need alternatives in order to watch this show.

It's produced by the guy who wrote produced the 2009 movie and Into Darkness. It's going to totally be related.
Then I'm not watching.

On the Star Trek OS press release it says they are returning to the storytelling of old. Social themes, etc. Well, I can't say how much faith I have in that with a clown like Kurtzman on board. This guy doesn't know Star Trek or understand the fans at all. He only understands a section of them, and the division in fandom caused by the reboot, especially Into Darkness, is a testament to that.

If this goes back to Trek's roots and tells original, intelligent stories in the prime universe then I'm in. If this is JJverse and/or another rehash then they can shove it where the sun doesn't shine as far as I'm concerned.

You do know first and foremost that Star Trek is an action-adventure franchise, right? And that Gene Roddenberry said so back in 1965-1966 in the Writer's Guide and the prospectus, Star Trek Is...

Also, the original continuity is dead, as dead as the pre-New 52 continuity at DC Comics or the pre Marvel Now! continuity at Marvel Comics. Bringing it back won't work anymore, and would turn most viewers off, especially if and since they can buy the previous shows on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Oh I'm 100% serious. I think this is the approach Trek needs to succeed in the modern TV landscape. If you look at shows like Game of Thrones, the Walking Dead or Mad Man you'll see fairly large casts with multiple arcs in play. Now not every character will be front and center every episode or every season. But they will be there contributing to the show depth and breadth.

As for budget, I assume it would be on a scale similar to Game of Thrones or Walking Dead. Which have a fair amount of FX involved as well as costuming.

Storywise, like those show, we would be moving between characters/ships in each episode. Spend some time on DS9 dealing with Bajoran politics, then out to the "edge of space" where Voyager has made contact with a new race that threatens the UFP. The over to the Defiant and the Enterprise. dealing with trouble along the Cardassian border.

I think the approach is doable for CBS,

You do realize that the portion of the fandom that hates the Abramsverse that much is a pretty small portion, right?

Anywho, the goal is to expand the fandom, not to continue to cater to a shrinking fanbase.

The pre-reboot fandom is pretty polarized on the new movies. The movies have gained new fans who obvious enjoy the reboot, though. Whether those new fans will be willing to pay six dollars a month for a very "meh" CBS streaming service is up in the air, though.

Old time fan here. First off, I enjoyed ST09, but didn't care for STID precisely because I though it was too derivative. If I want to watch "Wrath of Khan", I already have the DVD, thank you.

Also as a student of politics I can tell you that the way to expand your base is not by alienating your preexisting supporters, but rather by keeping them and adding new people by targeting portions of your "product" to their interests.

Admittedly, a taller job, but I certainly think it can be done.
Thank you. At least someone with brains sees it, instead of this keen jerk assumption that older fans are scum who must be wrong in the head and cast aside.
I've been a Star Trek fan since September, 1966. And I love ALL forms of Trek, INCLUDING the newest films. Don't claim that "older fans" don't like the new movies.

Same here. And as I said above, setting this new show in the previous continuity would be an epic fail.

the pre Marvel Now! continuity at Marvel Comics.

Bad example, because I don't think they actually rebooted the Marvel Universe.

Well, it was a semi-reboot, anyway.

Any way I hope the make the universe more wild and some what scary again like in the TOS era.

The new movies have been just that, as have the comic books based on the new movies.
