Trek Returning to TV in 2017!

Wasn't Voyager used to lure people to UPN? And TNG was made for syndication which was pretty new at that time.
But yes, definitely that's what it's for. But that means they want it to be a big draw. Good news surely
Drew McWeeny from Hitfix says Kurtzman will likely use the abandoned script that he developed with Bob Orci for Star Trek 3 that Orci was going to direct. That script dealt with the Federation, Vulcans and Klingons racing against each other to find an alien time travel device.
I believe for most shows, once a pilot is approved for production filming usually starts after the first of the year for a series starting in the fall. Since in this case a pilot isn't really being made to try and sell a network on the show, they can pretty much proceed to regular series production, so for a January debut, they could probably start principal photography as late as May or June. Which leaves plenty of time for casting and preproduction.
I thought that was Orci and two newer screenwriters. I thought Kurtzman had "left" Trek at that point.
And TOS was used to sell RCA color TVs
Why would the Vulcans be racing the Federation? That's like California competing against the USA.
Perhaps they both came up with the story together and Orci took over from there.

I imagine it would be Vulcan refugees wanting to restore their planet, in contravention of the Federation Council's wish to keep the time travel device from being used nefariously, recklessly, or at all. Just as an example.
Individual planets still have sovereignty, though. Their governments/ruling councils/whatever might seek something for their own interest, without wanting to share it with the rest of the Federation.
I think it's more like Luxembourg competing against the European Union, for example.

Mother of God, what if it's been this way from the launch of the first Enterprise, and Hollywood is not the selfless charitable industry I've been led to believe? Next thing you'll tell me is that the IDIC symbol is not a philosophy to live by but just a ploy to sell merchandise to fans?
I am very happy with this news, though don't like that it will be on a streaming service. I am not going to sign up for that. Hopefully the premier episode does so well on CBS that they would decide to keep airing it on CBS network.
Doing 10 episode seasons like HBO shows would be a great idea if they have the right people in charge. I am not sure about Kurtzman. He is the dude who worked on the first 2 JJ movies but was not asked back for the 3rd one. And now he gets a TV series? He should consider giving calls to Manny Coto and Ron Moore to join the writing staff.

Ron Moore is not going to work for Alex Kurtzman. They'll hire someone from inside Bad Robot.

But anyway, the part of his proposal that I found really interesting at the time was this bit:
Imagine recruiting people like Alistair Reynolds, Ursula K LeGuin, George R R Martin, Richard K Morgan, James S A Corey, Ann Leckie, Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood, etc, etc, etc, etc - and adapting their short-stories to fit in with Star Trek - changing villains to Romulans, etc.
By and by, I love that Matheson was listed first, even having written only one Trek episode.
I've been a Star Trek fan since September, 1966. And I love ALL forms of Trek, INCLUDING the newest films. Don't claim that "older fans" don't like the new movies.
Amen. I've been watching Trek since it first aired on NBC back in the sixties and am neither angered nor alienated by the reboot, and quite enjoyed the new movies. Indeed, the 2009 film is one of my favorite TREK movies.
The idea that all us old-timers are obliged to resent the reboot is a myth that really needs to have stake driven through its hard.
Hell, if I took it personally every time some beloved old favorite got rebooted, I would have spontaneously combusted decades ago.
I do not love all of Star Trek equally. There are, in fact, large parts of it I do not like (the two most recent films do not fall into that category). But none of it offends me on any level such that I wish it did not exist, or resent the fans that it has.
All of that is pretty basic, "duh", kinda stuff but after reading this thread I felt like I needed to say it. I hope this new series is good and fun to watch. If it is I will be happy. If it is not, life goes on. I'm still probably more excited for more new movies at this point, but that is because I know that I like that cast and group of characters, whereas this is still a complete unknown. Which is exciting, but nothing that can be analyzed or critiqued at this point in time.
