Orphan Black - Season 3 Discussion

I'm not as fond of these episodes where the clones are all off in their own separate stories, or just interacting via phone or Skype, as I am of the ones where they interact "face to face." Maslany has startlingly good chemistry with herself. (Or with Kathryn Alexandre, I guess, since that's who she's usually playing off.) Of course, they have to limit the clone meetings so they don't blow their VFX budget, but it's just not as much fun when they aren't together.

But we did get the second onscreen appearance of Alexandre as the Prolethean midwife, plus a nice little behind-the-scenes featurette focusing on her. I was glad to see that, because I think she's very attractive, and it's annoying that of the two actresses, the one I find prettier is also the one whose face I usually don't get to see.

Okay, of all this show's surprise twists, the Castors being the Ledas' biological brothers is probably the least surprising. As soon as Cosima started looking at the DNA results and going "hm," I knew what it was she'd found. Not only are Maslany and Millen similar enough types to be believable as siblings, but this has become increasingly a show about family. In season 1, the clones were "genetic identicals," but by season 2, they were thinking of each other as sisters. So it follows that the boy clones would be their brothers. (Although it's mythologically problematical, because Leda was Castor's mother. Castor's twin sister was Clytemnestra. Although it's pretty obvious why they didn't use that name for the girl clones.)

To paraphrase a Theodore Sturgeon story title, "If All Men Were Brothers, Would You Let One Marry Your Sister's Baby's Surrogate Mother?" Hold on, let's see... that would mean that Mark would be both the baby's father by marriage and his biological uncle. Good grief, this baby's lineage is already incestuous enough, with Gracie effectively being her own baby's sister. That would mean the baby is its own cousin and its own nephew/niece. Holy identity crisis, Batman!

So did evil Prolethean lady actually kill Mark? That was a legitimate surprise. I thought sure that Sarah would save him. I have a hard time believing they'd kill him off, though. They've done so much to build his character. Why show him burning off the tattoo last week, or have Sarah confront him about their family bond, if it wasn't going to have any payoff? So I'm inclined to think he's somehow survived.

^I hope he survives. He's pretty much the only relatable (no pun intended) Castor we've met so far. But on the other hand, he did torture the farmer--yet he didn't intend to kill him.

I love seeing Alison in her new scheme. I just adore watching her wackadoo little mind spin.

That was the first episode in a long while where I can say that felt like a Filler episode. Now that usually comes in a negative way, and I don't want to be negative because I did like the episode. The thing is though Orphan Black is so used to keeping things moving at a breakneck pace and tonight was the first night where I am worried that we are moving away from the Leda Clones and focusing too much on Castor. I thought we were going to be done with the Proleatheans but I guess it was inevitable that they would return. I just miss the face to face interactions between Sarah and Alison, or Cosima and Sarah, or just Sarah and Helena. I hope they rescue her soon and this storyline isn't going to take up the entire season. With 7 episodes left, there isn't much time to stall with this story.

Still, I would probably grade the episode a B. The Brothers revelation wasn't surprising (I think I said last week that I see the Ledas and Castors teaming up at the end of the season) but at least it was "Something".

Tatania did mention this season would deal with the clones pretty much doing their own thing. I'm sure it will all come back together in the end, but so far Maslany's comments are playing out just like she said. And sure, I'd love for them all to be together too, but I'm finding what they're building up to really fascinating.

Also I love the Castor boys and am not too bothered that they're now sharing the screen with the Leda clones. They're building to something big here, and I'm glad we're getting equal development for all the players involved. So it's a non-issue for me :)

So I disagree that I'd label it a "filler" episode, but I do agree it was setting up a lot of stuff that will have payoffs down the line.

Maybe I missed that interview. Other than the promotional stuff, I was trying to stay relatively spoiler free.

Yeah I didn't seek out too much promotional material either before the season started. Can't remember where I ran across that now.

Great soundtrack on this latest episode.

I was absolutely lol that Alison is making the soap. Of course it's a nice cover story, actual soap making going on.. her attention to detail is always a pleasure.

"I need to cut something"

I just don't see things ending well for Alison and Donnie. Neither of them is really that good at things. Whatever they attempt to do has a way of going horribly wrong, even if they somehow manage to survive it. (I'm still expecting a payoff for their incredibly stupid choice of burying a corpse on their own property. Maybe a drug raid of the garage will expose the buried body.)

I don't get why Felix isn't helping make the "soap", he loves drugs.

But this Castor storyline, I'm not feeling it. I don't know if it's the actor, or the fact all the male clones are soldier, but I feel no difference between the brothers as I do with the sisters.

Well, the boys were all raised together, so it makes sense for them not to have the range of differences the LEDA girls have.

I haven't seen a good shot of the floor this season. But when they were pouring the concrete last season, they still had an irregularly shaped hole there.

The smart thing would have been to remove the old concrete back to the seams, fill that square section in, then seal the whole damn garage floor with a nice epoxy coating.

^^^I should write that down. Never know when I'm going to have to bury a body in my garage.

Not just that, but their difference is neurological, hence the varying amount of...sanity? Personality variations of the same personality?

I would agree with that. It's all setting up for the next big situation. It has to build, one layer at a time. I didn't see this as "filler" at all. I really like that many players are getting some well-needed attention. It helps to fill in all the details in a satisfying way. But...your mileage may vary.

Mark is the one male clone I liked. Granted that is probably because we knew him the longest, but what Gracie did was cold. She escaped her psycho family with the help of two "abominations". Even if she was horrified that he was a clone, it was brutal that she betrayed him to his death.

Right now the male clones all seem the same. But, maybe we will see more development later. Right now they seem like terminators.

Allison and Co. going into the drug business is cracking me up. Allison is the craziest of the girl clones. I love watching her.

Cosima's assistant is a hoot. I love that guy.

Every time Paul is in the room with Cal, I get the feeling that he is resisting the impulse to cut Cal's heart out with a rusty nail.

i thought i saw in the preview one of the boy clones with blood in his head/hair...I thought it was Mark, which would make the previews super spoilerific.

Maybe Mark's wife winds up shooting her, after having a change of heart? Are we sure she wasn't in the vehicle with her mom?

We'll see....

And on a tangent...more of Tatiana's ability as she's doing (in a sense) a new character... a recovering Rachel that reminds of Gabby Giffords.

And i thought the only way she can do a "different' character now is by donning a fat suit...
