I'll be darned. It does! I never noticed that before. I won't be able to unsee it now!

Yup, I did that with a binoculars case. I think we had phasers and communicators from some toy manufacturers but the tricorder was elusive, as I recall. I think someone made one, which was pretty cool with lights and sounds and such, but for some reason it wasn't black (I think it was a grayish blue) and looked nothing like the on-screen prop.
