X-Men: Apocalypse announced for May 2016

Eh... Him being 20 something in the early 60s and his 'daughter' being a fairly young teenager in the late 2000s was already going to feel weird. I'd just as easily find out she was actually his granddaughter, which would mean there's no particular problem there (since we have no exact date on his death, we can assume he had enough time to have a child before he died).

I do think it was a shame to eliminate him (and Emma, as well) after such a small part.

The X-men movies were set in 'the near future' in 2000 so trying to date them is far trickier. Potentially if he was only 16 in First class and Syrin was only 14 or 15 in X2, he could be in his forties when she was conceived. Seems more than plausible.

Well, he really didn't seem 16 to me there. But if that was the case, then, yeah, ok.

I do think it was a shame to eliminate him (and Emma, as well) after such a small part.

Well, the actress they cast as Emma was pretty disappointing -- she sure looked the part, but her performance was lifeless and bland. So it's no wonder they declined to bring her back.

Not liking the actress doesn't mean they needed to eliminate the character, though. It's not like they haven't recast things before - and even if they didn't want to use her right now, they could've written her out in a way that didn't involve death. (Or just completely failed to mention her at all...)

I thought killing off any of the First Class characters and not in the actual movie was odd. Given how these have jumped a head 10 years each time, recasting the characters with older actors would be easy. Plus with spin-offs like Gambit and Deadpool coming you would have thought they have given themselves opening to use those characters again.

In this interview writer, producer Simon Kinberg says they are definitely planning that all new X-men movies are part of single universe.http://www.ign.com/videos/2015/04/18/how-apocalypse-will-change-the-x-men-film-universe

I am loving every we know about Apocalypse. Return of the Jedi was the first movie I remember seeing in a theatre. 1983 was the year I started Kindergarten. I am looking forward to all the fashion and pop culture in this. There is a location picture of young Nightcrawler in a Thriller jacket!!!! Which I had never thought about before but does look similar to his costume in the comics.

Can anyone explain to me why Gambit, of all people, is getting a solo movie? I mean, Gambit?

Which seems to be a much more literal interpretation of the comics character's look than Alan Cumming was in X2.
In what way? He just looks like a younger version of the X2 Nightcrawler to me.

I'm not saying it's incompatible with Cummings's version, but the X2 look started with the comics design and added its own novel twist with the ritual scarring, whereas this is more verbatim. Also, his skin seems lighter in this version, which is consistent with how it's often been colored in the comics (although I think it's really supposed to be a fine coating of blue-black fur that appears black in shadow and blue in highlights -- but comics have a long history of taking things that started out as black-with-blue-highlights and turning them pure blue, like Batman's cape). Not to mention that Cummings's Nightcrawler was more haunted and solemn, while this one's expression seems more wide-eyed and enthusiastic, more like the comics character's happy-go-lucky persona. In fact, I'm reminded a bit of the teenage Kurt from X-Men Evolution.

^The scarring could well have been self-inflicted at a later time in X2 Kurt's timeline. Also, its perhaps unsurprising that the young Kurt is or seems more happy-go-lucky than his older equivalent. And yes, I know you didn't say the two were incompatible.

All this talk of "Avengers" and "Superman Vs Batman", I'd almost forgotten that the X-Men films are better than both. There's something about the world they inhabit that feels more fully realised and if we're talking about "universes", the X-Men universe covers not just movies but also time zones (providing all kinds of possibilities)

I find the characters more interesting and like the way that Wolverine has an ability that allows him to exist in both eras (and it works nicely as a thread through the films). Plus I think the X- Men have the superior actors by a long way. Stewart and McKellen (and now MaCavoy and the fantastic Fassbender)

I hope they make more (perhaps focus a little less on Wolverine now though)

I don't even get why Avengers or Batman or X-Men have to be "better"...this is a great time to be a nerd, we are spoiled for nerd movies. There's no winning or losing. We all win.

The young Kurt has scarring too.

:techman: Exactly. I want this to be great, I want all MCU movies to be great, I want the DC movies to be great, I want the new FF to be great, I want the next Trek to be great and the next Star Wars to be great.

Thriller Nightcrawler. Nice

I'm really excited for this movie.

Maybe that's because we're getting some classic X-Men characters for the first time in a while in a starring role - such as Cyclops, Jean, Storm, Nightcrawler, etc. - but it's great to see some classic characters again. As much as I love Xavier and Magneto, I always felt like the heart of X-Men was the dynamic between Cyclops, Jean, Storm, Iceman, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, etc.

The other exciting thing is that according to Simon Kinberg this marks the end of the road for the First Class cast. So if we do get another X-Men movie after Apocalypse - which I am sure we will - we could jump forward in time and get an X-Men movie starring Cyclops, Jean, Storm, etc.

A lot is possible now that the "Singer verse" has been essentially re-written.

That's a bizarre rumor. They just now rebooted the universe with the time-travel stuff. It's hard to believe they'd just do one year's worth of movies in that modified, fresh-start timeline and then abandon the whole thing. I mean, sure, if it flopped at the box office, then they might consider rebooting it, like Sony has done with Spider-Man -- although maybe not, since Fox had a number of X-Men flops yet still carried on with the universe. I just don't see them deciding to abandon a continuity before they have any box-office returns on it, and while it's in the middle of a new peak of popularity.

While 'Apocalypse' might be the end of Singer's work on X-Men, I doubt there will be a total reboot. They just recast Cyclops, Jean, Storm & Nightcrawler and had a sorta reboot with 'Days'. I could see them moving the story ahead, another 10 years or so, with the current cast. I just can't see a full on reboot.... unless 'Apocalypse' completely bombs of course.

Just sounds like a weird rumor to me. Now, maybe Bryan Singer himself wants to be done after "Apocalypse," and we know Hugh Jackman wants to be done as well, so it's possible that this could simply mean the end of their involvement in the franchise. A full-blown reboot doesn't make any sense at this point, though.

I'm with you guys here. I could see this being Singers last movie, but we already got a semi-reboot with the end DoFP, so it would be weird to reboot it again. I doubt Apocalypse will totally close off the future of the characters, so I don't see why they couldn't just continue on from there with someone new who takes things in their own direction.

Yeah, maybe somebody misheard "the end of Singer's involvement with X-Men movies" as "the end of Singer's X-Men continuity." Even though he's only actually been involved with five of the nine films to date (counting the two currently shooting).

I can see post-Apocalypse/Wolverine 3 the likes of Jackman, Fassbender and Lawrence may want to move on. The latter two especially I don't see as a problem as we've seen them enough to be fair in X-movies, it wouldn't hurt for future films to focus on other villains more.

The only thing is will James McAvoy want to keep playing the role of Charles Xavier beyond the "First Class trilogy"? It will be a real shame if in Apocalypse we finally see him become the bald headed Professor X... and then that's the last time we see him.

This can't be the end of the "Singerverse". Simon Kinberg said in that interview I linked to that Deadpool and Gambit are apart of it. Plus those could get their own sequels.
