Not sure if this has been posted or not but Emoire magazine has some comments from Singer and Kinberg on the movie: http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=44152
I think it simply a case of Channing Tatum willing to play Gambit. They think he sell the movie. I think its star power more than the draw of the actual character.
Six - he was involved in First Class' development and tried to direct it.Yeah, maybe somebody misheard "the end of Singer's involvement with X-Men movies" as "the end of Singer's X-Men continuity." Even though he's only actually been involved with five of the nine films to date (counting the two currently shooting).
Gambit was insanely popular in the 90s.... but NOW?
Gambit still has his fans. He was recently in X-23's solo series. Acting as a sort of father figure to her. Wolverine was there but he's still estranged from Laura. Oh and Jubilee was there too. She's also a vampire now.Gambit was insanely popular in the 90s.... but NOW?

IGN has a whole bunch of new set pics up from the X-Men News twitter, including our first look at Jubilee. I like the look for Jubilee.
I think we can safely say they're no longer afraid to bring the comic looks into the movies pretty much unchanged. We've come a long way from the black leather uniforms and jokes about yellow spandex.
