X-Men: Apocalypse announced for May 2016

Maybe they're just going to take a break from the X-Men team and focus on individual characters for a while?

My guess is they are waiting to see how well this movie does. If it is successful I would happy to continue with these young new actors. Not making a huge jump in time but continue in the 80s. Progressing with the age of the actors.

It could be any number of things, really.

Maybe they want to fast forward to present day.

Maybe they want to do individual characters in an attempt to build up a new team, like the Avengers films have done.

Who knows?

Or maybe it's just an erroneous rumor, like most rumors are.

Then again, these are the people who decided to make a movie about Gambit, so I have no idea how their minds work.

I think it simply a case of Channing Tatum willing to play Gambit. They think he sell the movie. I think its star power more than the draw of the actual character.

I am not really a fan of the actor or the character so I am not excited about it either.

Not sure if this has been posted or not but Emoire magazine has some comments from Singer and Kinberg on the movie: http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=44152

Interesting comments about Storm. Sounds like we might be seeing elements of her street-thief past.

I've heard the name, but I had no idea Tatum was that big a star. I don't think I've ever seen anything he was in. (Hold on... okay, he had a bit part in the '05 War of the Worlds and played Superman in The LEGO Movie, but that's it.)

He has become a sex symbol in the last couple years. Particularly do to the movie Magic Mike, which I have never seen. I don't think he is really a major star yet but Hollywood is certainly pushing him to become one. I suspect they are hoping him staring as Gambit will appeal to female fans who would not normally see a superhero film.

Yeah, maybe somebody misheard "the end of Singer's involvement with X-Men movies" as "the end of Singer's X-Men continuity." Even though he's only actually been involved with five of the nine films to date (counting the two currently shooting).
Six - he was involved in First Class' development and tried to direct it. ;)

I'd say Tatum is very well known to anyone under 30. Girls for Magic Mike and guys for the Jump Street duology. Especially after the "my name is Jeff" thing went crazy on social media a while back.
And then things like White House Down, Foxcatcher, Jupiter Ascending etc. I just mean he's definitely not some tiny name no one's heard of.

As for Gambit, I don't know. I do remember someone like Lauren Shuler Donner (might not have been her but someone like that involved in the X-movies) saying he was the most popular X-character after Wolverine. Not for me to say if that's true but I definitely read that somewhere recently

Gambit was insanely popular in the 90s.... but NOW?

People who grew up on comics in the late '80s / early '90s are becoming the people who make the decisions about what to put into production. Same reason Sony remembered a few years ago that it had Ghostbusters sitting in its back pocket.

Gambit still has his fans. He was recently in X-23's solo series. Acting as a sort of father figure to her. Wolverine was there but he's still estranged from Laura. Oh and Jubilee was there too. She's also a vampire now.

That's one of the five I'm counting: X-Men, X2, First Class, Days of Future Past, and Apocalypse.

Although it looks as if he was an uncredited producer on Origins: Wolverine -- is that the sixth one you're thinking of?
