Winona Ryder is Amanda

This only show Variety is clueless.

Agreed!

The people at Variety probably don't even know that Spock's blood type is T negative.

DUMBASSES!!!

to be fair, the fact that Spock is half human is a pretty damn significant part of his character.
I suspect a typo in Variety is being propagated in loads of news sources. Note that the specifics 'getting Trekkers in a tizzy' and the explanation why was added by the secondary source. There's no way (or reason) they'd change that.

Winona Ryder is a dead ringer for T'Pol. My master plan is falling into place.

Sarek will almost certainly be played by Keanu Reeves.

So am I the only person who thinks her acting range isn't compatible with what we know of Amanda? I keep thinking of her role in The Crucible and can't help but feel she will ruin Amanda..

They're going to make her look older? Or are they going to make Spock younger? If Vulcans are all super strong Super geniuses with odd maturation rates... I liked the element from Alien Nation that the new commers whizzed through high school in a couple months.

Spock should have been entering the academy when he was 5 and a 1/2? But they were all around 30 in TOS.

I'm willing to bet that what with the wonderful TrekMovie.com has been feeding us that her appearance will take place in scenes set during Spock's youth. I hope and pray that the actor playing Even Younger Spock doesn't have to wear something like this.

Mother? Mother, is that you?

If you check out the article on variety.com about Winona Ryder's casting you'll see they've changed it from Vulcan mother to human mother.

That's really great casting news. I was really on board with the earliest actors cast in the film, then I was a little let down by all the unknowns - I mean, I've never heard of Chris Pine and I have to admit he looks a little too-"O.C."-"90210" for me, but we'll see. But Winona Ryder in this film - that is fantastic!

Winona Ryder is not "Spock's Vulcan mother"

Glad Variety corrected their error (not "typo"). With a reboot like this, I take everything at face value. I wasn't one to assume that when a venerable industry rag publishes "Vulcan mother" what they really mean is "human mother Amanda Grayson." Who knows what surprises Abrams has up his sleeves?

That said, I'm fine with Ryder in this role. She'd make a fine Vulcan, too. (No doubt what caught Sarek's eye.)

True, she understates the fact that she has a big rack...

I briefly pondered this. The temptation to stick ears on Ryder may be too great to resist.

Then I came to my senses. Here's to hoping they have, too.

I like this casting, but JJ is beginning to thread a very fine line. With so many high profile actors, this could begin to look like a parody. I don't want to see reviews where the critics say I had a good time playing spot the celebrity.

 I could never resist making repeated irritating A Scanner Darkly references to whoever I have the misfortune to drag to this film!

Eh, if it's a small role, I can see Keanu in it. Just have him sedated and bored and it'd pass for profound and wise... or so the success The Matrix has proven.

Who are the high profile actors? Zachary Quinto plays a recurring villain on a hit series but he's hardly a household name. Simon Pegg is a reasonably well known comedy actor but not exactly Jim Carrey or even Matthew Perry in recognition stakes. Bruce Greenwood is a respected character actor but not as famous as say Bruce Willis or even Kevin Costner.

Winona Ryder is fairly well known but she's had a quiet profile since her infamous trial. She's not so well-known as to overshadow her role the way say Angelina Jolie or Julia Roberts would be.

The actors playing Kirk, Chekov, Sulu and Uhura would barely make a dent in most people's radar. This cast is hardly what you'd call all-star. One can only assume therefore that they have been cast on the basis of their talent and ability to channel the original actors in those parts. Which bodes very well, IMHO.

Re: Winona Ryder is not "Spock's Vulcan mother"

People want to read success or failure into every crumb of info being fed to us.

I'm pretty sure people on this BBS want this film to fail.

The good news for you is that Keanu only has a habit of reuniting with his former female co-stars once.

1. Rachel Weisz in both Chain Reaction and Constantine.

2. Sandra Bullock in both Speed and The Lake House.

3. Winona Ryder in both Dracula and A Scanner Darkly.

4. Uma Thurman in both Dangerous Liaisons and Even Cowgirls Get the Blues.

5. Charlize Theron in both The Devil's Advocate and Sweet November.

6. Monica Bellucci in both Dracula and The Matrix Reloaded/Revolution.

7. Carrie Anne Moss in both The Matrix and The Matrix Reloaded/Revolution.

:)
