Winona Ryder is Amanda

Reading Winona's IMDb trivia page has resparked my long-standing crush on her. She's supercute and craaazzzyyy!! She's suffered from depression, afraid of water, had to drop out of a movie because she couldn't get out of bed, too shy to do Leno and is an insomniac.

She's nuts and it drives me wild!

Who's that guy playing Iron Man again?

Well with Tom Cruise and Russel Crowe being rumored to be part of this movie and Winona Ryder confirmed to be part of it, I thought I'd make a joke about Abrams' judge of character. :D

Well, this came out of left field. Should be interesting to see where this goes. I think this bit of casting goes in the same vein as Simon Pegg's casting as Scotty -- not necessarily good or bad, but very interesting.

I just read on YahooNews that she IS a Vulcan! What? How can Spock be a halfbreed if he's 100% vulcan? And why the hell would I be one of the first people to see this?

As someone who's never been particularly impressed by Ms. Ryder's acting - and who counts "Journey to Babel" and Jane Wyatt's performance therein as one of my favourites in Trek - I have to say this piece of casting news is quite a letdown. Hopefully it'll be a "blink and I'll miss it" role. To each their own, however.

They don't know what they're talking about. Amanda is clearly human. No amount of reboot could ever change that.

Most of us gloss over obvious typos. ;)

People are gonna say, Winona Ryder is in Star Trek? I have to see that. Fans who haven't seen her in years, and might've missed A Scanner Darkly would like to see her. This movie is going to be huge.

Bigger than "Alien: Resurrection"?!?!

Ya wanna know who I think she is? (Which would mean that we don't see her and Quinto together at all...)

I think she's T'Pring!

Just because Spock hasn't seen her since she was a young-un doesn't mean that she can't be in the flick! ;)

So anyone pissed she is playing the Vulcan moter of Spock?

I'm dubious. If she was the Vulcan mother of Spock, why would she have a name like Amanda Grayson? The article in question quotes more internet posters than it does Hollywood personalities.

I found the following on Yahoo's Entertainment page.....

Variety reports the erstwhile Heathers star will play the Vulcan mother of the Starfleet logician, sending Trekkers into a tizzy. Abrams is messing with a key element of the Star Trek canon: In all previous installments of the franchise, Spock's mother was human, not Vulcan (the pointy ears come courtesy of his father's side of the family).

Wait......what?

Variety didn't print a typo. They are using a term lifted from European royalty.
"...the Vulcan mother" means "the mother of the Vulcan", the same way Queen Elizabeth's mother's title was "The Queen Mother"*.

Variety owes me a donut now ;)

* or as Sammy Davis, Jr. called it, "half a word". :)
