Winona Ryder is Amanda

She was fan-freakin'-tastic in A Scanner Darkly so I say good choice.

So was Keanu Reeves. The issue is range. Her character in that film isn't at all like Amanda - Amanda's the kind of proper, decent woman who essentially doesn't exist in PKD novels.

So can she be a good, prim mother like Jane Wyatt? Other postsers say she can. Well, I'll wait and see.

While she was not prim or proper, she made a good Abigail Williams in The Crucible. She has a wee bit more range than Keanu.

I won't hold Alien 4 against her since nobody was good in that.

I liked Alien 4.
Be good to Winona again. I haven't seen her in anything in awhile. No I didn't see Scanner Darkly, I hate that photorealism style.

Alright, the shoplifting jokes have to stop. People post them like they think they're the first ones to say it. I believe it was something she had to see doctors for, and get medication for, right? She got treated for whatever she was diagnosed, and is now rebuiding her career. Even if it's a small role, it's a significant one. When this movie becomes the next huge thing like Pirates did, her career will explode again. I'm happy for her she got such a major movie. She's an academy nominated actress, a calibur of actor Trek hasn't had for a while. I hugely respect Abrams for casting her, and look foward to seeing her as Amanda!

Shame. You missed out on the most faithful PKD adaption yet, and IMHO one of the best sci-fi movies of the decade. :)

You probably also missed out on Renaissance, which is another rotoscoped sci-fi I think was great but nobody agrees. If the future of the genre is in efforts like these, count me in.

Bizzare. I love me some Winona Ryder, but strange choice. I can kind of sort of imagine it... though she seems too young to be Quinto's mother. Weird. Gonna have to see how that goes. Maybe as the mother of little-boy Spock?

She doesn't necessarily need to play mother to "little-boy Spock". She could easily play the mother of "18-year old Spock that went off to Starfleet".

Jane Wyatt was 56 years old in 'Journey to Babel'. From that episode, it was implied that Spock joined Starfleet 18 years prior to that. 56 years minus 18 years = 38 years old. Ryder is 36. I'd say the age is almost perfect.

Plus, why are there so many criticisms of her acting ability here (not Dale's post I quoted above, but other posts). The woman was nominated for 2 Oscar Awrds. I think that qualifies her to be considered for a small part in a Star Trek film.

Amen. She's beautiful and talented and a big enough name to draw in people who otherwise wouldn't give a crap about Star Trek. This movie's going to be Legen-wait for it!-dary.

Err.. One thing though: Why are people so sure it's a "small" role?

It is supposedly Spock-centric. This could easily incorporate 25-30 minutes of screen time for the character.

A short scene in the first act, a long "exposition" scene in the second, and final short send off in the third.

So does the stapler on my desk.

That said, interesting choice in Winona. The part of me that had a crush on her years ago is confused. :-)

I'll also be passing on Beowulf but then again I don't see myself "missing out" on something that doesn't appeal to me. *shoulder shrug smilee*

Odd, if not unappealing choice. Variety's report apparently describes her character as Vulcan, but I'd guess that it's simply an error on their part, rather than revisionism by Abrams. Mind you, Ryder actually looks like she'd make a decent Vulcan!

She's a good actress, even if her profile has dimmed from her early 1990s heyday. Not really a ringer for Jane Wyatt but Amanda was a fairly minor character, so that's hardly important. Perhaps a little (or a lot!) too young to be Quinto's mother, but the same could be said of Wyatt and Nimoy, plus the age gap between Nimoy and Mark Lenard was very small. I'm also guessing that she will be mother to teen/ child Spock in flashbacks - after all, we learned in Journey to Babel that Spock hadn't spoken to his parents in years.

Suit yourself, taste varies. ;) Those films come with my recommendations nonetheless. (Though not Beowulf, which I have not seen yet but wasn't exactly thrilled by the trailers.)

Fairly high-profile name for a small role...

 This is my favorite casting choice yet!! The cast and crew better watch out for their belongings!! And they better keep a guard in the wardrobe department!!

In all seriousness she is a good actress (and one of my favorites). I am glad to see another well-known actor join the cast!!!

People are gonna say, Winona Ryder is in Star Trek? I have to see that. Fans who haven't seen her in years, and might've missed A Scanner Darkly would like to see her. This movie is going to be huge.

The funny thing is, in Ann Crispin's Time For Yesterday novel, Kirk's mother is named Winona.

I guess Abrams was determined to cast someone with a mental problem or a criminal record in some form.

Wow, all this bragging about IQs and yet we get very timely shoplifting jokes. You guys are funny! Keep it coming, with the current events jokes, I think Leno needs some staff writers.

Wait, I have one. Have you heard about this? What does N.A.S.A. stand for? Have you heard this one? Straight from the headlines.
