Will Star Trek XI be "canon" ?

Unless the movie is going to be worshiped and reverently recited, what the hell does it matter? Is someone going to be burned to death forty years in the future for watching non-canon Trek? Seriously now.
*Refers poster to Futurama's "Where No Fan Has Gone Before"* Ahh.. the good ole days of the Star Trek Wars...:vulcan:, but not the Star Wars Trek, that was different.:guffaw:

And yes, by "canon" I do mean a "story that occurs sometime after Enterprise and before TOS." It doesn't have to be part of JJ's vision, it just has to connect somehow.

I checked with my sources at Paramount. They said Star Trek XI will not be canon. I am kind of bummed about that.

I prefer the term "mythos" to "canon." The details may be blurry, but the people, the stories, remain. If you watch TOS, you see that it is rife with inconsistencies. I was just watching "Balance of Terror," and they refer to "Earth Outposts," not Federation, and when they fire phasers, it's distinctly the bolt-like torpedos. It's pointless to get in a snit about nacelles.

To me, it will be canon. Anything that's been filmed by the official source (not fan films) and shown via TV, movie, etc. is canon.

For me, that even includes, TAS, TFF, TUC (which Roddenberry apparently wanted part of that one not to be included), and any lousy episodes/movies you can think of.

Canon is a problematic term, IMO - however, I consider Trek XI to be canon, for whatever the term is worth.

:) By the way - canon isn't necessarily a good thing either... but in the case of Trek XI, I believe it will be...

Doc : See it's quite simple really, one doesn't need to be a rocket scientist to figure this whole thing out.

( He turns toward the blackboard and starts drawing the time lines out )

~ 42 hours later ~

Doc : Well, then again, one does need a Degree in Quantum Mechanics.

Considering so many fans don't consider TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, or the movies canon, I think this will be up to each individual.

Forget canon, i don't get the problem with just saying that everything else happened in Universe A and everything in this film and the Abramsverse happens in Universe B. Theres no restrictions anymore, the writers can finally make some great movies without having to carefully tiptoe around what came before. Over time the Abramsverse will develop its own canon and its own history as hopefully more films and series set in it are made.

I agree for the most part, except that I don't think that adherence to canon is responsible for the bad movies and episodes. Plain old bad writing/acting/directing are responsible for that.

Maybe in TREK XI Biff Tannen's great-great-great-great grandson will get a copy of the 2305 Gray's Sports Almanac and try to change history back to the way it was before Nero showed up.

Yet those individuals don't care about other individuals, because his or her opinion is the "one true way of Star Trek and everyone else is just an idiot." Anyone who cries about canon is better off being ignored.

Can this person who attended the UK premiere count as canon:

At least one person I could visibly tell didn't like it was a guy wearing a Starfleet uniform to a major movie premiere. That says alot. He was visibly seething when it ended and he was exhaling and looked shaken. I could hear him say loudly, "This is unsound". In his broken English he was essentially griping about the perceived continuity issues.
That would've made for an awesome YouTube video. :)

 Please oh please, let there be a record of this...

Ah, random guy on the Internet checked his "sources" and it's official folks: It's not canon! Argument over! Nevermind what JJ and the crew who actually worked on the film have said.
