Given the definition of what constitutes "canon" I cannot see how it could not be.

I prefer the term "mythos" to "canon." The details may be blurry, but the people, the stories, remain. If you watch TOS, you see that it is rife with inconsistencies. I was just watching "Balance of Terror," and they refer to "Earth Outposts," not Federation, and when they fire phasers, it's distinctly the bolt-like torpedos. It's pointless to get in a snit about nacelles.
To me, it will be canon. Anything that's been filmed by the official source (not fan films) and shown via TV, movie, etc. is canon.
For me, that even includes, TAS, TFF, TUC (which Roddenberry apparently wanted part of that one not to be included), and any lousy episodes/movies you can think of.

Canon is a problematic term, IMO - however, I consider Trek XI to be canon, for whatever the term is worth.
By the way - canon isn't necessarily a good thing either... but in the case of Trek XI, I believe it will be...

Canon is irrelevant! Now more than ever.
Forget canon, i don't get the problem with just saying that everything else happened in Universe A and everything in this film and the Abramsverse happens in Universe B. Theres no restrictions anymore, the writers can finally make some great movies without having to carefully tiptoe around what came before. Over time the Abramsverse will develop its own canon and its own history as hopefully more films and series set in it are made.
I agree for the most part, except that I don't think that adherence to canon is responsible for the bad movies and episodes. Plain old bad writing/acting/directing are responsible for that.
Maybe in TREK XI Biff Tannen's great-great-great-great grandson will get a copy of the 2305 Gray's Sports Almanac and try to change history back to the way it was before Nero showed up.
Yet those individuals don't care about other individuals, because his or her opinion is the "one true way of Star Trek and everyone else is just an idiot." Anyone who cries about canon is better off being ignored.
