What I fail to understand is why anyone feels an empty, sad and bitter (and completely non-personal, unlike a couple of others quoted above) crack such as Captain April's here was deemed worth responding to at all. Yes there are half a dozen threads on this forum about ST:XI and canon.
This thread's title is about 'will the new film be canon?'. Nimoy is telling us that it doesn't matter for the most part. I didn't feel we needed to hear him being upbeat about the plot. There is enough positive buzz in the press and by fans. SalvorHardin please don't take it personally.

I just honestly though it shows better what Nimoy is trying to say if the whole quote is present. You know, sometime people don't bother following a link and read the whole article.

I respectfully disagree. There's tons of material that hasn't been done or the writers could use a new ship or something. A Dominion war movie, a Romulon war movie? A Titan movie? Why monkey with established TOS canon with alternate timelines and such.

I'll decide once I see the movie whether or not it's canon for me. I also see it as an AU universe before the attack - it easily explains away both physical details due to actor change and technology details.
If others disagree - enjoy.

There is no actual definition of "canon" that equates to "this is the stuff I personally like." The term and concept of "personal canon" is ignorant gibberish. It's correct to say "this is what I like and this is what I choose not to pay attention to."
If it's filmed Trek (TV, Movie, Animated), made by Paramount, it is canon.
