And if they try and make a whole new continuity then I just don't have the willpower to invest in it. Brand new continuities are a struggling breed these days with so many franchises dying or getting rebooted as soon as they hit a stumbling block. Not to mention the subjective side of it where a rebooted continuity represents the death and abandonment of one I hold dear.
Disco tried to not live in the past with a move to the 32nd century. It was not well-received which led to the 5th season being steeped in the past and it still wasn’t well received.
But I’d like to see something à la TNG where it pushes the era forward, takes a new stance on it and visits previous worlds on a rare occasion. What I don’t want is Legacy or something similar set right after Picard Season 3 just following up on the Berman era’s greatest hits.

Well, they had at least three episodes tied directly to the past in season three. I still haven't finished the season.
To my mind, both the 23rd and 24th centuries are completed narratives that need no further expansion.
I think it was important for Michael to see that Spock did okay for himself and that episode introduced an interesting direction for the Vulcans and Romulans. I’m not sure the other two episodes you’re speaking of? The mirror episodes?
The scene where Michael reads Spock's history is one of my favorite scenes in the entire franchise. For multiple reasons.
Unification 3 is a beautiful episode
Exactly so. The loudest voices clamor for the familiar and anything new is deemed a threat. It's crazy to me.
A perfect opportunity to fill out the 22nd century. The Romulan War, the birth of the Federation, early exploration, and cooperation between the founding members. That's the stuff I want.
This to me is what Starfleet Academy is. I’m not gonna pretend it’s perfect or even what I thought I wanted out of a new Trek show, but to me the first season absolutely has that sense of “newness” that I feel The Next Generation presented when it first came out. That sense of a fresh look at the future of this universe we would want to live in, far removed from the 23rd and 24th century, with (mostly) brand new characters (mostly) untangled from previous entries in the canon. It manages to evoke that feeling of space being vast and full of unexplored potential and stories. And while it still has a lot of the DNA that made up Discovery (which feels like its closest relative), I got the sense in season one that they created their own unique style for the show, with their own brand of humor and drama. There's still a lot of room for improvement when it comes to tapping into the potential the show has, but this viewer at least was pleasantly surprised by how fresh the first season felt.

Not if it means losing his character from Prodigy! Granted it is an awful episode, but he was fun in Prodigy. I'll take the bad with the good.
I'm no fan of this show, but I do hope they air the second season and not make it a tax write off like WB did with Batgirl. IMO, that should never be allowed.
The tax write-off thing went viral because it's awful, but it's nowhere near as commonplace, nor reasonable from a business POV, as Zaslav's little rampage makes it seem like.
I do believe SFA S2 will air. I think it will do so on Paramount+, per the norm (sans Prodigy S2, yes). They may drop every episode at once, or do two a week, or something to that effect. But I think it'll get there.

What we don't know is how bad season 1 numbers were. And with the whole merger going on, I'm sure they'll be more picky with spend. Obviously, they won't tell regulators this.
With lawsuits ongoing regarding the merger, if is possible those viewership numbers could be released. They'll fight to stop it, but it could happen.
The season's already filmed and complete, the money's already been spent. If they are as picky about money as you claim, it would make more sense to air the season at this point, to at least try to make back a profit. Even if S1 didn't get the highest ratings it could have, I doubt it did so bad they actually lost money airing it. They won't lose money airing S2 either.
