Why No Love For Zoe?

Ummm no. What Kool-Aid are you drinking?

She's servicably attractive, yes. I wouldn't say "Hot." There were scenes where the lines in her face made her look 40. And they did nothing to make her look like Uhura.

:guffaw:

Well, to be honest, she's hot, but not the hottest girl around. Now, perhaps. Not in 10 years or so -- just look at the age wrinkles she's got going there. :D

Young Uhura, dispite the miniscule screen time she's been given in this movie, is still light years ahead of the original Uhura

Really, that's your counter? She's better than a character from forty years ago? A black, female character on a network show in the sixties?

Nevermind the original Uhura; does she have more screentime than Beveraly Crusher? Than Kira Nerys? Then Jadzia Dax? Than Kes? Hell, I couldn't stand 7 of 9 or T'Pol (I thought they were both unecessarily sexed-up cyphers), but they were major characters with serious plotlines that revolved around them regularly.

If you want to argue that the new Uhura had a decent role, do it on the merits of the movie. Don't compare her to a forty year old property.

She was a highlight for me. I really got a kick out of how she talked Spock into changing her assignment (which likely saved her life...) and just the unspoken "Yes dear" in that whole scene.

Moxie is what I like most about this Uhura and I'm glad that after all these many years and many movies they at long last gave her a proper first name even if it was around as none canon before this.

Sharr

I'm not sure that her relationship with Spock put the character in the best light. I'm not worried about CANON VIOLATION! or whatever I'm just not sure it serviced the character to be under Spock's wing so much.

^ Yeah, that's what I have problems with, too. I like the character and I like how Saldana portrays her, but...

When it comes right down to it, her best scenes aren't her behaving like a Starfleet officer or even like a Starfleet officer behaving badly. They're her being a love interest for Spock. Hmmm...

Goodness knows I'm glad to see poor Uhura get to do something besides open channels, so this is an improvement. But I wouldn't call it the ideal scenario for the only major female character. Maybe she'll get to do more in the next movie, though - I haven't given up hope or anything.

I have to disagree with you, Robert - she's beautiful, but I think Nichelle is one of the most beautiful women on Trek.

Well, for me I'm, comparing her to what I'd see for a Black Female character in major mass market films like Trek- and by that standard this was still very positive. There rarely even are any to begin with. Anecdotal, but on the bulletin boards I visit that are Black female specific and where the film was mentioned reaction ranged from pleased that Uhura had been given some depth to positively giddy.

Also, I'm not sure, but given that there is an existing framework for Trek, it might be somewhat trickier to increase her role to the extent of the other female characters you mentioned that were created with a more sizeable role at their inception. They also had a number of main characters to introduce in this film. There's so much more time in a tv series. But, in any case it will be very interesting to see what direction they go in in the sequel. I do hope they maintain or increase rather than send her back. I'd like to see her continue to be integral to the plot.

JustKate and Mr. Adventure, I must say that so far, at least I'm not seeing the disappointment you feel in the places I've visited. For the most part Black women WANT to see ourselves as love interests and as desired/desirable and normal because we are infrequently portrayed that way in films or tv. It's not all we would like to see, of course, but most really do want to see that aspect of our humanity included. I can understand, though, that for other demos of women this is like the taste of water or air. It's unbiquitous and expected, so it isn't seen as anything notable or worthwhile, perhaps. I don't know what the solution is there. I guess whatever they feel will earn more money is what they'll go with.

I love her so much that I was distracted and missed parts of the movie thinking about her. Luckily I have now seen it six times and hope for four more.

She was good in those movies, she's never been great. When I think of great actresses I think of Meryl Streep, Susan Sarandon & Sally Field. She's where she should be in her career-status I reckon.

Come on, one of the best things in the movie is Zoe Saldana. She is hot and a great actress. She was great in The Terminal. She was fabulous in Guess Who. And she was fantastic as Uhura.

Damn it, she should be one of the big stars in Hollywood.

No.

Hot? Nah, more like average and WAY too skinny. Her acting wasn't Oscar worthy by any means. It was mediocre, if that.

Classic Uhura>>>>>>New Uhura

There's a new Zoë article in Trek News: Saldana: How About Kirk Next Time?.

Judging from the fact that Uhura was the third one introduced in the movie after Kirk and Spock (before Bones!) -- and that in the new poster it is just the three of them in a triangle -- it seems like they have got something cooking for her.

Honestly, Zoe is pretty skinny. But I guess actresses feel a lot of pressure to be size zero these days and it's nuts. I suppose she could just be naturally thin-but 5 or 10 pounds or so more would suit her well.
However, have you seen Thandie Newton-she is frightening thin and near anorexic looking.
I saw the poster, I don't know how these things are decided on, but I'm not sure we could draw any conclusions from it.
That article...yes it elicited some strong response in the news forum, I'll say that.

I don't mind Uhura having a bigger part, just not at the expense of McCoy please. At the expense of Chekov and Sulu I don't mind though LOL.

I thought she was great, too, and didn't mind that she wasn't Original Recipe Uhura. I think she successfully claimed the character for herself.

The one line of hers that made me cringe was "oral sensitivity".
 Ew ... TMI. But that was the scripting, not her acting.

It was "aural sensitivity" - it means sensitive hearing.

Grow up.

I thought Zoë did an excellent as Uhura. She was an intelligent character who had integrity and the smarts to actually be the best officer on the Enterprise.

My problem with her character? She doesn't do anything!

Well, this is the 2009 Star Trek, an alternate universe, and hopefully one difference will be a story not simply revolving around three white males (and yes, Spock is white). Boosting Uhura's role or even bringing in another regular female character doesn't really have to be at the expense of anyone anyway.

Exactly. It worked out near flawlessly in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan with Saavik.

I'm just hoping Kirk doesn't shut Uhura up whenever she has something to report.

Space Seed said:
Uhura: Picking up a signal sir. Captain, that's the old morse code call signal!
Kirk: Thank you.
Uhura: *Deciphering* C...Q...C...Q?
Kirk: We're reading it, Lieutenant.
Haha! That's right. Shut that communications officer up. Don't ask what the signal means, or ask Uhura what CQ might stand for. Just brush her off so you can diss Spock. I have a feeling the Bob and Alex are going to have a field day with this aspect of Kirk's character, because I think they're still under the delusion that we like Kirk's "a**hole" personality the most.
.....

.....
Should have given First Officer to Uhura.
