Why is Tasha Yar hated?

I didn't hate her either. Did many people actually hate her, or are you starting from a faulty premise?

Could be. I've never noticed much in the way of Tasha-hate either.

I could see hating the writer who put her, teary-eyed, in that "penalty box," though.

I always got the idea that people hated her character just as much as Wesley. Wesley in itself gets more hate than he deserves IMO.

I liked Wesley just fine when he was an earnest, young Starfleet officer-in-the-making. As an ever-exuberant wiz kid or mystical, interdimensional galactic-plane surfer, not so much.

I'll admit that my dislike for Pulaski has nothing to do with the actress.

I'm just in the camp that immediately realized she was supposed to be McCoy.

Yeah, that whole ploy was so blatant, unoriginal and pandering I actually felt insulted by it.

It is possible that I have confused the grudge people feel against the actress for leaving the show and then trying to come back as being the same as hating her character.

I have however seen occasionally that her acting skills have been mocked, and it's usually been that "penalty box" scene that grates people. I don't get it. Aren't people allowed to be human? And do all women have to behave like Terminatrixes to be considered "strong"?

Don't blame those most vocal about it, too harshly. For example: In real life, female sailors will usually appear very plain on ship, totally unmade up, in their uniforms. But, when the ship reaches port, a parade of tarted up women disembark, instead. There does seem to be a clear delineation between being a soldier ... and being a woman. And Tasha demonstrates this unfortunate tendency, too.

I think that the scene where Tasha was in the penalty box would have been a good scene if Picard had not said something as stupid as "It's okay to cry when you're in a penalty box".

Tasha crying was natural and human, Picard's response infantilized her.

The Boo Hoo I'm In A Penalty Box scene was just poorly written. The worst line for me in that scene was "What am I doing, crying?!" Just checked and the Great Bird of the Galaxy has a co-writing credit, so I wonder if it's his.

I agree with this. Some never really improved. Riker just became Jonathan Frakes. His transformation was complete in FC.

Troi just became Marina Sirtis by FC as well.

I have heard of the Tasha hate before.

I never hated her but I never liked her. I don't like the way they wrote her. I liked Denise Crosby. And I did love her in "Yesterday's Enterprise" and as Sela.

The possibilities were endless with her, but they didn't do the character justice. With that said, I am a huge Worf fan, so I am glad they did write her off, and having the good sense to bring her back when they could.

I'll go against the grain on Yesterday's Enterprise: personally I loved her original 'meaningless' death in Skin Of Evil, I totally got why they did it that way and I appreciated the dramatic thrust of that scenario, and by way of comparison I felt her allegedly more 'heroic' death in Yest Ent was weaker. It just didn't have the punch-in-the-gut feeling of her death in Skin Of Evil.

I liked Tasha but felt she was poorly implemented. They kept banging on about her being a woman blah blah - just let her do her job and do it well. I also loved her death but I had no idea it was coming and the abruptness was amazing. I just wish she had got more to do before being offed. Then they screwed the pooch by giving her a second meaningless death. I so wanted her to be in one of those Romulan defector tubes.

Beats me. I liked Tasha.

Crosby's acting was iffy (hey, pretty much everyone that first year was spotty) but I could live with it.

I thought it was a good change to see a security chief as a main character, and a woman! I found Tasha had an interesting background and story to her character.

That first season, I though Tasha as a character was more interesting than Geordi or Riker or Troi or some others.

I sure would have loved for Tasha to stick around and develop thru the seasons. No conflict with Worf at all. One could be ship's weapons/tactical officer, the other could be hands-on security officer with the redshirts. Could have been a really good team.

I thought Tasha was great and I wished that she hadn't left the series when she did.

I think you are misinterpreting what he is saying. I'm pretty sure he was saying that it makes no sense that Geordi only seems to lust after beautiful women when he can't even really see what they look like.

So there's no way he can lust for what he has never seen in his life. His entire experience would be with the way women sound and feel, and what they look like, theoretically would have no effect on his decisions.

But hey, it's Star Trek, where the writers pander to the geeks in respect of relationships.

We never actually got to see Tasha on shore leave. The one time she was in a slinky outfit, she had been infected by the "Naked Now" virus.

The saying goes, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." It would be more accurate to say: "Beauty is in the senses of the beholder."

There are some men I don't find at all physically attractive. But their voices may be very pleasing to my ears.

In Geordi's case, we know he's attracted to Tasha, even though he doesn't know what she looks like as sighted humans would see her. But have you ever considered that Denise Crosby's voice is very nice and feminine? That could be one reason why Geordi would be attracted to Tasha.

I had to read this a few times to comprehend, but I think I get it now. I think GalaxyX is saying that it wouldn't matter what the woman looked like because he wouldn't be able to see her anyway. I don't think he's implying that the women would shun him because of his blindness.

Either way, I'm can't say I'd dislike Geordi over that. Me, I kind of cooled on him a bit when it seemed like he'd gotten to where he was crabby all the time!

^^^We saw Geordi strike out with a few women, but on TV shows most of the actors tend to be good looking, so how do we know he cares about appearances? Furthermore, he's not exactly blind with the VISOR, so he may have his own visor-vision of beauty.

Either way GalaxyX meant it, it still smacks of "he shouldn't be after the pretty girls because he's blind."
