Why Is Star Trek Popular?

I love Trek cause part of it is, as many have said already it's got a massive fanbase and can connect with so many others..

I figure if you like trek, you can relate to other people easy that love it.

-Plus I'm sure many of you have found friends through Star Trek.

People who have to pick on others do so because they need to make themselves feel better. It has nothing to do with Star Trek.

The Trek 09 movie directed by Abrams was/is popular. The rest of the franchise? Never has been a heavyweight, like LOTR or Star Wars. Why, I have no idea.

And yet I would contend that the only reason it stayed on the air for almost 20 straight in one form or another beginning in '87 is that is was very popular as born out in the ratings for the last couple of seasons of TNG. Had it not been syndicated (and therefore not considered a "network" show), it would have regularly appeared in the top 20 (sometimes top 10) shows based on viewership. I would say that the popularity started a steady decline beginning in the early 90s.

And the only reason there was ever a relaunch in the 80s was because the movies were doing so well at the box office.

And the only reason there was a movie series was because, when Paramount was looking for something to cash in on the resurgent sci-fi craze begun by "Star Wars", there was a very huge vocal ready-for-anything fanbase of TOS once that show made it to syndication.

"Never a heavyweight"? I beg to differ.
