Why Is Star Trek Popular?

I think it's both. Though Trek has seen some bad times. Like when Enterprise was cancelled not even the fans could get a new season going, and it seemed like it was done. Then the new movie that reinvented the series by someone who was not a Trekkie. The last one to do that was Nick Meyer.

People always seem to forget that it was the other non-Trekkie, Producer Harve Bennett, who was tasked with revamping Trek after TMP.

It's popular? Did I hallucinate all those geek beatings at school, and having to hide Trek related publications under my jacket like some old pervert?

Just saying the words "Star Trek" out loud is basically a death sentence to your social life. That's not my idea of popularity.

Yeah, that pretty much sums up my experience concerning the matter as well. Mention 'Star Trek' and people will slowly back away from you.:(

Except that the movie was one of the highest grossing films of 2009 in both box office and video sales and is popular enough that Apple is using it in its ad campaign for the iPad. Other that that, yeah, people generally hate it.

My reasoning:

1. "Star Trek" = the franchise. It is hardly known/remembered by many. Most of my h.s. students have never seen any ep (until I show them "Enemy Within" in psych.!) or movie other than Abrams'. Adults are a bit more familiar with the franchise. But not something currently followed/indulged in by anywhere near a major chunk of the POPulation.

2. Many people saw the Abrams movie . . . once or maybe twice. Along with many other movies this past summer. That film WAS popular for a few weeks, I'll grant ya that. Like MI2 was, once.

American Idol, alas, is popular. The CSI franchise is popular. Hot "pop" singing acts are popular. Star Trek . . . no. Fine by me.

By the way, I love TOS, and like much other Trek (even incl. VOY). I could not care less if it's popular. It might be more fun to be into an unpopular thing, in fact.

I love TOS and Trek XI is that wrong for me to be a trekkie because my mum just doesn't really like that I'm a Trek fan she says I look at Trek too much any suggestions from people that feel the same like me?

The Trek 09 movie directed by Abrams was/is popular. The rest of the franchise? Never has been a heavyweight, like LOTR or Star Wars. Why, I have no idea.

The '09 movie may have been popular, but I would say Star Trek in general is not that popular. As for school beatings and wedgies and the like, I reckon this is a generational thing. I was in my teens when TNG was first aired and many people I knew watched it regularly, so for Generation X (man, how I hate that term) being a Trek fan isn't such a big deal. However my 13-year-old daughter, whom I hooked on Trek last year while watching Voyager reruns, doesn't let any of her friends know of her Trek obsession. Considering the rubbish that her friends watch (X Factor and the like) I find this sad.

My nephew gets teased -- in 5th grade -- for being a Star WARS fan. It's getting rougher, man.
