Why hasn't DS9 been represented in NuTrek?

In the 90s, DS9 was the red headed step child and largely ignored.

    That tradition continues today.

Honestly? I think it's partly because they botched the ending.

Unpopular opinion, I know. But a lot of the endings for the characters were really unsatisfying, and not in a good way. Worf especially, you knew everyone was going to ignore that five minutes after fading to black.

And the less said about what they did to Sisko (over Brooks' objection) the better.

At the risk of sounding contrarian why does DS9 need representing? DS9 is my second favorite Trek series but I think it is great, wrapped up series, that doesn't really warrant further storytelling.

I know this is probably a super unpopular opinion, especially in the DS9 parts, but when a story wraps up with an open ended idea I actually like the idea of leaving it open. TNG was a similar way (by no means my favorite). "All Good Things" is an amazing episode, with an awesome open ended ending. Just having that, and ignoring the films is such a wonderful thing.

Or, to put it in another way, some of my favorite novels never had a follow up. They wrapped up their story, had the possibility of more adventures hinted at, but that didn't occur in print. And that's more exciting for me.

That's a fair point, and one I can respect. For me, it's about representation. I mean, we've got TNG and Voyager representation all over the new shows.

    So?

No show deserves representation. They have all had their chance at glory. To my mind, letting shows rest is more interesting.

And that's you. Most of the rest of us want it to happen. We're all different.

If we're getting to see what the characters from TNG and VOY are up to now then it's only natural for most fans to want/expect the same thing to happen for DS9 characters.

Thanks for letting me know I'm in the minority..

Fans can want all kinds of things. But, to quote Spock "Having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting."

    And that's my Trek experience.

    ...

Y’all do remember that Section 31, an organization introduced in DS9, featured HEAVILY in Star Trek Discovery’s second season, and, while it was pushed back to work on SNW, they’ve talked about a 31 centered spinoff featuring Michelle Yeoh’s Georgiou, a character the actress has been been pretty obvious in wanting to revisit and, because she is such an in demand actress these days, Paramount has no reason to deny her wanting to come back?

Or there’s Grey’s Trill heritage, visiting the cave of Mak’ala and the Guardians, a place and group established by DS9.

Additionally, there’s President Rillak being part Cardassian/Bajoran, and graphics on SNW that mention Cardassia and Bajor, in addition to the prior appearance of a Changeling. And the Confederation timeline did reference Sisko in dialogue and O’Brien on a graphic.

It may not be the characters themselves, but DS9 has very plainly not been forgotten about. However, the places DS9 centered on have not appeared in the current era - DS9’s focus was on the Bajoran sector, occasionally Cardassian space, and, due to the wormhole, the Gamma Quadrant. Discovery has been free to travel but focused on its story arcs, Picard’s first season was Romulan centric and the second season mostly took place in the past, and SNW is still early in its portrayals.

DS9 isn’t being forgotten. But, despite getting a wider focus to Alpha Quadrant politics on the show, in terms of the actual characters? They’re not so easy to just drop in casually - Seven joining Picard’s cast made sense, given shared Borg trauma, but casually dropping Picard into Bajoran politics or religion? Or issues of genetic augmentation to talk with Bashir? Picard has no inherent connection to Bajor, so they would have to contrive something to drop a DS9 character into that show, while the others have been focused away from that area of space entirely.

Here's the biggest thing when I see complaints about shows getting represented. It pretty boils down to "Why am I not seeing my favorite characters?" OK, fair question, people like what they like and want to see more of it. But, then you list out all the different ideas present and it's almost like that doesn't count. Personally, I love Section 31 in both DS9 and Discovery (and Into Darkness) but it's clearly not tickling the ears like fans of DS9 want.

Of all the things to continue in a different show, Section 31 would be down at the bottom to me.

Why? Because once you've hit the pinnacle of the franchise the only way to go is down

Others have mentioned the actual nods that nu Trek has made toward DS9. I personally feel that DISCO is a spiritual successor to DS9 when it comes to tone and to some extent subject matter. The willingness to explore the more morally complicated aspects of Starfleet/Federation, a prolonged war storyline, delving more into spirituality/religion, are all things I feel are DS9's influence on DISCO. I also find some parallels between Sisko and Burnham. Both are the only Black leads for live action Trek series, both characters start off as junior officers, and while Burnham's first season arc was more of a redemption story, there was something of a redemption arc that Sisko had in the DS9 pilot. And Sisko and Kasidy's relationship was the best developed captain's romance we had seen in Trek, and Burnham and Book's reminds me of that. Sisko and Burnham are not the same characters, and both had different journeys, but it also stuck out to that their route to their captaincies were more circuitous.

Well, didn't O'Brien leave to become an instructor at Starfleet Academy? He could cameo or even star.
You know, if they timed and filmed it better they could have had the Starfleet Academy show focus on the people who are going to be in the engineering room with Captain Pike when the accident happens.

I wanted to see an episode where the Romulans discover the murders and the subsequent deception.

I would like to see that! Especially if they could get Avery Brooks and Andrew Robinson to play their characters again.

The final shot of All Good Things was perfect : / They didn't even need to do any films after that.
