Why Didn't People Like Jadzia Dax?

I'll say this. I hated Jadzia Dax for the first season or two, but I didn't mind the relationship too much.

Then Ezri appeared, and I was on my knees wailing PLEASE BRING JADZIA BACK!!

I liked Jadzia but I like all the character's on "DS9" except for the baseball player prophet in "Emmisary." Worst character EVER!

My wife has said on multiple occasions that she'd like to count all the dots up close. Does that count as not liking her?

I was thinking the other day that when the actress left the show, they should have done it by having her killed off-screen while on a mission, and told us by having the survivors of whatever happened telling Worf (or telling Sisko so *he* could tell Worf, because honestly, if you just survived some horrible BS, would *you* want to just die anyway by being the one to deliver that news to a distraught Klingon). Completely aside from any meta level satisfaction the showrunners might have taken from not giving Farrell an on-screen swan song, it could have been used to make those casualty lists the crew kept talking about seem more real to the audience when we saw "Jadzia Dax" on one.

Ezri could have been her own character. Or, if they *really* felt the need to carry on the symbiont, perhaps the survivors did what Crusher did with Odan to keep it alive until they got back to DS9.

Jadzia could be smug and she tried too hard to be funny. The writers gave her some pretty lousy lines, and to be fair, Terry Farrell had some charm, but I agree with others that she became an annoying Klingon fangirl by season 4. Also, She was supposed to wise but she could be pretty temperamental. She called off the wedding until Sisko had to have a talk with her and remind her that compared to her, Worf was practically a child.

There's a scene in "The Ship" where she makes some lame comment and Sisko basically tells her to shut up. :bolian:

Pretty clearly no. They didn't know until the last episode of the season was about to be filmed that negotiations to keep Farrell on would fail. Her death scene was added at the last minute so that she wouldn't just vanish offscreen and never be mentioned again like Richie Cunningham's brother. But that's why her death scene was less meaningful than the producers and the audience would have wanted.

I don't know how far ahead they filmed, but I remember everyone following DS9 knowing well in advance that TF was leaving that season. It was certainly no surprise whatsoever that she died in that last episode, the only surprise was how. And they had a very strong foreshadowing scene at the end of the episode in which they failed to rescue the stranded woman officer, whom they all took turns talking to.

She, the actress suffered from pretty girl syndrome. Picture this.. the TNG casting room.. let's fire someone! Who? The blonde one? Yeah she couldn't act much but we hired her anyway and we've used her up so it's time to get rid of her. ('Beverly' and 'Troi' breathe a sigh of relief) .. Bye bye Yar. Casting room of DS9, let's fire someone! Who? The pretty girl whose hooked up with Worf .. no one will feel sorry for the pretty girl. Bye bye Jadzia. Casting room of Voayger, let's fire someone! Who? The blonde one? Yeah her. BUT let's bring another blonde one in with big boobs so we don't look so obvious this time. Bye bye Kes.

Three times.

Yes, that could have been such a knockout scene, reading down the casualty list, seeing an acquaintance or two, and then coming to Jadzia.

Exactly. Smug and definitely nowhere near as funny as she thought she was. All the reminiscing about knowing so-and-so a century ago got boring, really fast. I read an interview the actress gave when she was whining about the second-tier characters getting storylines. Well, princess, if you were a better actress, they'd be writing for you, wouldn't they? How dare anyone else get lines!

I didn't like Jadzia right from the get-go. She knew how to do EVERYTHING, and all this Curzon/Klingon crap... if they wanted Curzon, why didn't they just hire a male actor and be done with it?

And then Michael Dorn was hired and everything turned into the Worf and Jadzia Hour. That's when I basically tuned out everything but the O'Brien/Bashir friendship.

Jadzia was dull early on when she was supposed to be all-business. Everyone got rewritten partway through DS9, and when they made her into a bohemian sort, I warmed up to her. I like late Jadzia a lot. She's actually a popular character, but many seem to go the other way too.

They tried to have her be a physically tough woman because she's tall, I would guess, but that she doesn't carry off well.

For a while, I thought Farrell was doing an awesome job of conveying a mannishness in her portrayal of Dax, to indicate someone who had lived male lives before, in spite of her body's feminine attributes and beauty.

Then I saw her on Becker, and realized that, no, that's actually just her. :)

Agreed. I was active on fansites back then (Shoutout to The Great Link) and we all knew it was coming, it was just a question of how and when. I remember having the discussion of how they should have off-ed her in Change of Heart way back then.

I thought she had a great mix of masculine and feminine attributes, and provided a good foil for Sisko. I always enjoyed her and Bashier's back and forth.

There are several big problems with this theory. First, the negotiations were continuing even though Farrell had started going out on auditions. Second, she had only started doing so the week before Change of Heart started filming. Three, the final breakdown of negotiation only occurred a week or two before Sound of her Voice had started filming. By then, many aspects of the finale--a more complex episode, including special effects and additional cast--were already in production.

I only read the first page...but I thought her character was great, and the actress did a great job bringing some fun and energy to the mix. She was also believable as a mate to Worf (as opposed to the random Troi pairing)

I sure don't understand the hate

I like Jadzia. Not my absolute favorite in the series but a very good character.
I like Ezri too but as I see it, there shouldn't have been any connection to Jadzia. Ezri should have been a different character.
And they shouldn't have killed off Jadzia either. She should have been sent to Trill for some diplomatic mission and been replaced by Ezri Tigan.

Jadzia was pretty boring in season one, but once the writers loosened up the character, I think Terry Farrell grew into the role. She eventually became one of my favorite characters.
