A random red shirt death would be more meaningful?^ ITA. I better scene would be place her on the ship where she is killed when her console blows up or something
Only if Bashir says 'She's dead, Ben'A random red shirt death would be more meaningful?
Pretty clearly no. They didn't know until the last episode of the season was about to be filmed that negotiations to keep Farrell on would fail. Her death scene was added at the last minute so that she wouldn't just vanish offscreen and never be mentioned again like Richie Cunningham's brother. But that's why her death scene was less meaningful than the producers and the audience would have wanted.
I was thinking the other day that when the actress left the show, they should have done it by having her killed off-screen while on a mission, and told us by having the survivors of whatever happened telling Worf (or telling Sisko so *he* could tell Worf, because honestly, if you just survived some horrible BS, would *you* want to just die anyway by being the one to deliver that news to a distraught Klingon). Completely aside from any meta level satisfaction the showrunners might have taken from not giving Farrell an on-screen swan song, it could have been used to make those casualty lists the crew kept talking about seem more real to the audience when we saw "Jadzia Dax" on one.
Exactly. Smug and definitely nowhere near as funny as she thought she was. All the reminiscing about knowing so-and-so a century ago got boring, really fast. I read an interview the actress gave when she was whining about the second-tier characters getting storylines. Well, princess, if you were a better actress, they'd be writing for you, wouldn't they? How dare anyone else get lines!Jadzia could be smug and she tried too hard to be funny.
For a while, I thought Farrell was doing an awesome job of conveying a mannishness in her portrayal of Dax, to indicate someone who had lived male lives before, in spite of her body's feminine attributes and beauty. They tried to have her be a physically tough woman because she's tall, I would guess, but that she doesn't carry off well.
I don't know how far ahead they filmed, but I remember everyone following DS9 knowing well in advance that TF was leaving that season. It was certainly no surprise whatsoever that she died in that last episode, the only surprise was how. And they had a very strong foreshadowing scene at the end of the episode in which they failed to rescue the stranded woman officer, whom they all took turns talking to.
There are several big problems with this theory. First, the negotiations were continuing even though Farrell had started going out on auditions. Second, she had only started doing so the week before Change of Heart started filming. Three, the final breakdown of negotiation only occurred a week or two before Sound of her Voice had started filming. By then, many aspects of the finale--a more complex episode, including special effects and additional cast--were already in production.Agreed. I was active on fansites back then (Shoutout to The Great Link) and we all knew it was coming, it was just a question of how and when. I remember having the discussion of how they should have off-ed her in Change of Heart way back then.
