Why Didn't People Like Jadzia Dax?

I do think Jadzia Dax came across as if the writers and actress were trying a little too hard to make her too cool and confident, especially when she wasn't always portrayed consistently and Farrell didn't really convey having lifetimes of experiences. Not bad but middle-of-the-road.

I do think some fans dislike some of the female characters (especially Crusher, Troi and Jadzia) and hold them to a different standard, especially complaining that they're too preachy and impulsive (without getting punished for the latter) and the traits in male characters are more tolerated.

.... I love Crusher, Troi and Jadzia

I'll confess I loved Troi and Crusher back inthe day when TNG was on the air. On a more current rewatching I find them rather annoying. Actually more so than Wesley. Crusher especially just seems like a character that the writers knew they needed to have, but had no idea what to do with. Whereas TNG's concept of putting the "Ships Councelor" right there on the bridge sitting next to the Captain and making sure everybody is chill and nobodies feelings get hurt sounds like something cooked up by modern collegiate snowflakes. I mean who thought THAT was a good idea. (Is that little room off the bridge Picard's "Safe Space" filled with puppies and crayons and finger paints just in case Riker is mean to him?) Looking back at Troi you can't escape the foreboding sense that "Someday having Troi on the bridge is going to be the death of this ship!"

Whereas Jadzia is largely watchable on a DS9 rewatch. Well aside from her horrible first season pairings with Bashir, which never really worked. Jadzia is likeable. She's just a character that the writers hamstrung themselves with early on and could never figure out how to do too much with. She certainly comes off better than about half of the Voyager crew. (No that guy standing in the back with the facial tats is not actually a mannequin. We only pay him to play one every week.)

I will admit that when TNG felt the urge to investigate Bev's private life, they tended to screw it up ... not always, but a lot. But Crusher's my favourite STAR TREK doctor, and I completely adore her. Otherwise, they really should've ditched the angle with her infatuation over Jean-Luc. It was the Christine/Spock thing all over, again and meant just as much, in the end. There was no hype there ...

Troi's Psycho Babble does irritate me, at times, because she never sounds sincere, spouting it. She talks like a bad textbook about Shame Spirals and the rest of it. When she's not pushing Political Correctness, though, she's generally pretty sweet.

Jadzia, I can't say enough good about. Loved her from "Hello." And it always surprises me reading disparaging remarks against that charming woman. At the same time ... Kira's being a butchie is hard to take, for me, a lot of the time. And she's always there! You know? Never an escape .... no respite from her braying. And where's Jadzia? Never looking for attention, until Worf came along, that is.

Not that I would include Dax in that group, but there are certainly some male characters who would be better described as preachy: Picard, Riker, Kim, Wesley Crusher, etc.

I liked Jadzia in the first couple of series but then I found her quite annoying. That said I found Major Kira really annoying in the first couple of series but warmed to her as the show went on, she is now one of my favourite characters. I found Jadzia a bit of a know it all, she had a good excuse having 300 years worth of experience but it really annoyed me she was also very monotonic. Although I did like her hen party I'd have loved to have been there doing Nog's dance. I was shocked when she was killed off and Ezri was brought in. I felt like Ezri was only brought in to give Dr Bashir a main character love interest.

Well the actress wanted to leave the show. Thats why they killed the character

I suppose that fair enough then. They wouldn't have wanted to keep her alive and leave DS9 for another mission or something as that would lead to the possibility of Worf leaving too. :klingon:

I think some credit is due. They showed us Jadzia's death. They didn't leave us hanging over the Summer, only to find that the actress was not present in the next season's premiere like some shows (see Earth: FInal Conflict and Babylon 5).

Oh yes, definately better to have the closure at the end of the season than to wait months to find out *cough*walkingdead*cough*

TWD has good reason (at least, it'd better!) to resort to a cliffhanger this time around. If they kill off a fan favorite (see: Norman Reedus) during the season finale, how many people will actually come back for season seven? Both of them.

Besides, I personally think its the Harry Kim of the TWD who gets Lucille'd...

Jadzia was just too even and perfect and respectable, even when she was shown whooping it up at her "bachelor party", or breaking the rules to go on a murderous vendetta with her Klingon buddies. No matter how much she's supposed to be loosening up, she's always controlled and unphased and proper. So, I rarely feel as if I ever "meet" this character at all. I'm told what her character is supposed to be like, but Terry Farrell doesn't exude that personality. She's not totally present and invested, as Nana Visitor was.

I am always surprised by the number of people on this board that say they don't like Jadzia and I always wonder why. She was one of my favorite DS9 characters (the other being Kira)...

I liked Jadzia a lot. She was a fun character with a sly sense of humor. I especially enjoyed her relationship with Worf.

Eu Entes Jadzia. Na minha opinião, os escritores não sabiam como criar uma pessoa estável. Ainda assim, ela era uma personagem cativante.

I had no problem with Jadzia. I think in the beginning it was difficult for her to get a handle on it because she's in her twenties trying to play a wise person of 300 years. Plus the writers insisted on making her something for bashir to chase. I thought once Worf came aboard the two of them complemented each other well and her character really took off.

Ezri I didn't care for and frankly I thought wasn't needed for a show going on it's last year.
