We've seen only ten years of that era, four really. With one future holodeck glimpse at 2161 and a handful of character flashbacks to the 2130s and 2140s like the Season 2 episode "First Flight." We did get to see Archer as a nine- or ten-year-old painting a model spaceship, but that's about it.

It all feels like going foward to me because it's still the future, regardless of what era they choose to focus on. The only thing moving into the 25th century means is we'll have yet another name for warp drive, yet another name for phasers and torpedoes, new uniforms, etc. It's the exact reason Braga didn't want to make another series set after Voyager.
The same guy who gave us Phase Cannons, Spatial Torpedoes and new uniforms anyway. You can set it anywhere as long as you have a good enough story and space to explore.
Famous words from Berman and Braga.
Know for their impeccable decision making, of course. ;)

I wouldn't mind Legacy. Picard S03 brought me back to the fold, and I am okay with continuing from there. I enjoy Lower Decks as well, so yeah, something early 25th century sounds good to me.

If I truly had full power over everything, though, I would take Phase II or Phase III with 80s movie aesthetics. The post TMP mission, or the post TFF mission.

sure - a '80s retro show would sell like lead bricks swim

The hair would sell it anyway. I can't believe the amount of mullets I'm seeing these days.

Poor example, The Drumhead was originally conceived as a budget saving episode because so many fourth season episodes were going over budget. There were even serious discussions about doing another clip show instead.

So great example. You don't need a high budget and special effects to make great TV. You do need good writers.

With how many shows are period pieces these days I don't think it would be seen badly at all. I'm not saying 60's TOS, I'm saying '80s cinematics. Even the new NCIS is set in 91. Stranger things is a love letter to the '80s. Retro is cool. I think that would be the good compromise.

Alien:Earth will be keeping close to the 70's sci-fi aesthetic seen in the original movie, from what I've read. It just depends on the will to make these things and having good ideas.

I hope for no more retro. I'm tired of 70s/80s nostalgia. Just let it die

As much as I enjoy SNW, I'd like to move on from prequels and TOS Era stuff. I want a follow up to Picard

If you're tired of being stuck in the past, the 32nd century is the most modern point in time (not counting Calypso, and you shouldn't). That's where the anti-nostalginistas should want all the shows to be.

There's a difference between having a show set in the 80s or 90s and having it set in the future as seen from a 1980s perspective. Nobody is going to look at a faithful 1:1 recreation of TOS movie sets, hair and costumes and believe that's supposed to be cutting edge technology 250 years from now. The only reason Picard got away with a faithful recreation of the Enterprise D bridge as it was built thirty years ago is because they acknowledged in the narrative that it was outdated and primitive. Indeed, it was a plot point.

Period piece with an actual historical period it makes sense.

A fictional universe projecting our humanity's current future? Does not make sense.

This is why I think new series should mostly be set in the 25th century. If people have a problem with things looking like they were designed in a earlier era, then we can't have earlier eras.
