Which is the stronger ship, Disco or Enterprise?

I'd say Enterprise. Desperate Hours makes a big deal about the Enterprise's impressive new phaser banks- given what we see in battle of the binary stars vs what we got in the finale of Season 2 (along with Enterprise being one of the best of starfleet) I'd say Enterprise, hands down.

All that stuff we see in TOS we take for granted now had to start somewhere- it was cutting edge once. This is that time.

Due to the excessive waste of shuttles and fighters in this episode, Enterprise was banned from having shuttles until after "Enemy Within", neatly explaining that continuity glitch:techman::p

The dialogue in DSC this season and last seems to indicate that the Enterprise is a superior vessel.

From what was seen in the last episode the Enterprise's Shields are a lot stronger then Discovery's.

    Disco, because... magic mushrooms. ;)

Shields might not be as strong, but the twirling spacial rap dance makes it an extremely difficult target to hit. A special characteristic I still find difficult to accept. Inertial dampeners, you know?

In Episode 14, the Enterprise's shields were demonstratively stronger, it had to protect the Discovery and took most of the incoming fire as a result, plus detonation from an oversized photon torpedo which looks to deal more damage than the man sized units we seen before.

What did frustrate me about both ships is the lack of point defence systems - the Enterprise's phasers from ST09 or Beyond would have taken care of the incoming S31 drones. The blue beams whilst far better than what we seen in TOS, were merely scripted in for fan-service.

I'm still trying to figure out what that BSG-style flak was supposed to be:

In BSG they had actual flak cannons. They don't have anything like on Enterprise or Discovery. But it "looks kewl" so that's why we had it.

My guess would be stuff impacting the ships Deflector field.

They are all over the place. Many not near the ships.

If it's meant to be the drones exploding, then dang, there has got to be thousands and thousands of those things out there.

Aren't those basically rifle caliber? You need something like 23rd century version of CIWS (the higher caliber the better)

    Deflector field not deflector shield.

You know, the thing they project far in front of the ship to deal with FTL space debris.

If that was regular space debris interacting with regular deflector field, then literally every second of every outside view of every Star Trek show would have to be filled with these mini explosions.

No question: The 1701. She'll kick the ass of any other starship in the Federation, Klingon, Romulan, et. al. fleet (and has done so too many times to count.) ;)

in S1, Discovery under Lorca were capable to destroy one of the Klingon Giant Flagship. So can the Enterprise stand single-handedly against one of the Klingon monstrosity Flagship during the war? That still one big question.

But if Constitution Class were so great like what we think about Enterprise, then Federation won't had such a bad day during the war. As there were more than 1 Constitution Class Heavy Cruisers, and Starfleet would sent some of them to fight against Klingon.

Imagine if they made a whole ship out of that blast door material, which kept Pike perfectly safe a meter from the detonating torpedo when the Discovery was shaken badly in space from it.

Think of them as platforms or just hulls which are then fitted out as necessary for the tasks required of them, some hulls are clearly slanted in a particular direction whereas others can be jack's of all trades.

The Enterprise is a deep space explorer platform and a ship of the line fitted with the best weapons and shields and I would expect an emphasis on reliability and warp engine power/speed, it should also have the most mounting points for both offensive and defensive systems, as an explorer it's sensors and probes should be also be top of the line, due to the extended periods away from any support the Enterprise has to have a well rounded set of systems.

The Discovery is primarily a science platform, it does have weapons and shields but it is not really meant to be used as a warship except in dire need as shown by the crew compliment being made up mostly of science personnel, it probably has fewer mounting points as well for weapons and shields but it's size allows for many large laboratories covering all kinds of experiments, the ship itself is also a testbed utilising newly developed systems to show proof of concept.

Its main advantage over the Klingons was the Spore drive, without that it wouldn't have fared any better than the rest of the non frontline ships.

The Enterprise should win, it it doesn't then it's either commanded poorly or its systems are not up to scratch.

Compare those above to the Reliant class platform which was a destroyer, that means it was designed purely to engage and destroy enemy ships of the line like the Klingon D7's, so it could on paper have had more mount points than the Enterprise hull at the expense of other systems it didn't need.

It's not just about phasers and torpedo launchers, targeting systems and impulse engines also make a big difference especially against opponents like the Klingons who favour mobility and speed in dogfights.
