Where would you rank it with the other films?

Not sure yet; I'd like to watch it a few more times to sort out exactly where to put it.

I do know it's much, much, much better than TFF, Insurrection and Nemesis (which is damning it with very, very faint praise since those movies are, IMO, complete and utter crap). It's better than The Voyage Home (which hasn't aged very well at all) and Generations (which is better than it's made out to be but...yeah). And given I'm (apparently) one of the few people in existence who doesn't think TWoK is some sort of cinematic / Trek masterpiece, I'd have to say ST (09) ranks above it, too.

Where it fits in with the rest...not sure yet.

I'm there with you on TWoK. Not like we all keep track of these things, but in the past week it's dropped down another level to #6. I watched it this week and it just didn't have that zest it once had.

This probably has slight changes every time I do it, but here it goes:

1) The Undiscovered County
2) First Contact
3) Star Trek
4) The Voyage Home
5) Nemesis
6) Generations
7) The Wrath of Khan
8) Insurrection
9) The Search for Spock
10) The Motion Picture
11) The Final Frontier

My TWOK is on #5. I have watched it a couple times recently and I find it really dated and lumpy. There are a few awesome scenes that make it worthwhile but there are also a lot of slow, kind of unnecessary bits.

Lumpy's a good word for it. Some parts seem stunted, and others dragged out far too long. There are fantastic, awe inspiring moments (the Genesis cave, Spock's death scene), but it's filled with cheesy dialogue and bad hair (I kid, but I do have issues with TWoK). Great fun, but not the high standard generally figured, in my opinion.

literally cannot believe how many people are ranking this pile of turd at the top of their lists. it's not just a poor star trek film - it's a pitiful fucking movie full stop.

Bwahahahaaaaa....bitter much? JJ Abrams owns you and your sorry ilk.

I can't really rank them traditionally, too many reasons for liking too many different things about each movie. So I tend to group them into 3 groups instead.

Fantastic Trek movies:

The Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, Undiscovered Country, First Contact, Star Trek.

Average Trek movies:

The Motion Picture, The Search For Spock, Generations, Insurrection

Shit Trek movies:

Final Frontier, Nemesis.

I have to say I've never been impressed with any Star Trek movie until this one. So first of one, that would be.

just posted this on another forum i frequent -

  • wtf did nero wait 25 fucking years to actually do anything after arriving in the 23rd century? he just floated around space doing the square root of fuck all. his motivation for wanting to destroy vulcan and earth (for some inexplicable reason) was that he blamed the vulcans - and specifically spock - for the destruction of romulus. so this pent up rage is allowed to fester for twenty five years while he... errr... waits for future spock to arrive at a specific point in space in time that he had absolutely no way of knowing, but would be there waiting for him the precise moment he arrived anyway... what?
  • romulus was destroyed by a supernova. however it wasn't the romulan star that exploded. rather this supernova was a star system distant to romulus that was a threat to the entire galaxy. WHAT!?
  • why exactly didn't the romulans, y'know, EVACUATE THEIR FUCKING PLANET!? spock had enough time to fly halfway across the galaxy to nearly prevent the destruction of romulus, meanwhile the rommies sat around doing the square root of fuck all. any race of people THAT stupid deserve to die imho.
  • Spock's solution to this physics-challenged catastrophe was to create a black hole on the event horizon, thereby stopping the exploding stars destructive path in its tracks. what? no, really... WHAT!!!???
  • they tried to portray nero as a decent individual who'd been simply stricken with rage at the destruction of his home world. nice idea i suppose. doesn't explain why his fucking mining ship was armed to the teeth with torpedos that are stupidly advanced even by 24th/25th century trek standards, and that as soon as he falls through the temporal anomaly and into the 23rd century he just starts randomly firing at the first starship in sight. no mourning or grieving, just open fire. he THEN does NOTHING for 25 fucking years when he realises he's in the 23rd century blah blah blah said it above. nero's so stupid and pent up with rage that he doesn't even think that he now has 130 years in which to save romulus from the aformentioned physics-challenged catastrophe, no, he decides to do NOTHING for 25 fucking years blah blah blah and then try and kill all vulcans, kirk, and earth. whoppee.
  • why the fuck does the enterprise - pointed out a few times by senior starfleeters and captain pike as the federations flagship - have no line officers abaord AT ALL besides captain pike himself and PointySylar? scotty beams aboard from the middle of bumfuck idaho for all PointySylar knows - PointySylar actually asks scotty if he's even in starfleet, and then sends him off to engineering. what?
  • PointySylar arrseting kirk for insubordination? fine. no probs. but trying to kill him on the bridge? and no-one bats a fucking eyelid? casting him off ship on a practically deserted and dangerous ice world (hello hoth rip off) rather than, y'know, sending a prisoner - a Starfleet Cadet no less - to the brig? and no-one even flinches at this? mccoy even tells PointySylar he understands why he did it. WHAT!?
  • When pike leaves the enterprise to face nero, he makes PointySylar acting skipper. fine. but installing kirk - a suspended from duty kirk facing unresolved charges of cheating from starfleet academy - as first officer? jesus wept.
  • iirc PointySylar tells the crew he HAS to beam down to vulcan to rescue his parents. they're in the council chambers, and there is no external communication allowed into those chambers. what? how the fuck did he know they were there then? the movie also made a big deal of two things - vulcan prejudice against humans, and PointySylars mother being human. just what in blue blazes would she of all people be doing in the council chambers then?
  • spock was less than 20 klicks away from the starfleet research base on Hoth-light when kirk found him. yet instead of heading over there, he decided to wait around in a freezing cave with no food, one pair of clothes and fuck all else until kirk rocks up before making his way there.
  • spock sees the destruction of vulcan from Hoth's surface. it's therefore reasonable to assume that Hoth is a moon of vulcan - at worst it's a planet in the vulcan star system. yet, this remarkable Hoth-a-like is immune to the gravity effects of black holes. while vulcan is being ripped apart by a black hole inserted into its core (WHAT!!!???), hoth just casually and smugly continues to orbit around its star completely impervious to said black hole gravity.
  • the movie tries to explain away the lack of starfleet ships as them ALL being off in some distant system or whatever doing something that must have been stupidly important... anyways, when nero's ship arrives in orbit of earth there's no ship to stop him. so he just deploys the driller-killer into the middle of san francisco bay and starts singing i'm too perfect for my cat... meanwhile, down in san francisco - the home of the entire federations navy, on the CAPITAL planet of the entire federation, people are just running around like complete and utter spastic children. no ground defences launched, no missiles, not even a fucking hand phaser... IT'S A PIECE OF FUCKING MINING EQUIPMENT FFS! 23rd century earth deserved to dies as much as the 24th century rommies did on the basis of being complete and utter retards.
  • and finally... kirk being promoted to captain - directly from cadet? WHAT!!!!!?????
look, i'm all for suspending my disbelief to accept a few dubious plot points, but this just screamed of a film written by authors who simply weren't thinking about what the fuck they were writing - as long as it was cool and flashy and appelaed to the masses, to fuck with the rest of it.

the movie is quite simply all style and absolutely zero substance. it's a poor trek film - as bad as nemesis, just better looking - and an equally poor sci-fi flick.

I probably rank it at number 6 - following TWOK, TUC, FC, TVH and TMP. But as another member said, I'll wait to lock on the ranking until after I've seen it a couple times more.

My own ranking would be

1 The Wrath of Khan
2 First Contact
3 The Undiscovered Country
4 The Voyage Home
5 The Search for Spock
6 The Motion Picture
7 The Final Frontier
8 Star Trek (New Film)
9 Insurrection
10 Nemesis
11 Generations.

I didnt like the new film, not a good film in my opinion, but its not the worst Star Trek film, the dubious honour belongs to the crapheap that was Generations.

Just some quick thoughts...

The four best Trek movies that come to mind for me in no particular order are Star Trek (2009), TWoK, The Voyage Home and The Undiscovered Country. J.J. and crew did a great job with the casting of the film, and I thought the writers did a decent job setting the pace and delivering an enjoyable origins story for the ToS crew. TWoK was as good as it was because of Ricardo Montiban, for without him the movie would have just been another Trek film. He is easily the most well defined of all Trek villians, given a clear motivation for revenge on Kirk. The Voyage Home was wacky, goofy and fun. The story was original and I still remember the scene with the guy on the bus!

Alright, now I know you've been waiting with bated breath for my opinion, so here goes:

1. TMP
2. ST09
3. TWOK
4. TVH
5. TUC
6. TSFS
7. FC
Tie for last: INS, GEN, NEM, TFF

1) TWOK
2) TVH
3) StarTrek XI
4) TUC
5) TSFS
6) TMP
7) Generations
8) TFF
9) FC
10) INS
11) NEM

I have now seen it four times. It is by far the best Star Trek movie.

I have to say I've never been impressed with any Star Trek movie until this one. So first of one, that would be. "

Yes! The truth is, Trek is all about two TV shows: TNG and TOS. I'm primarily a fan of TOS, but I acknowledge the contribution of TNG.

The films have always fallen short in many respects until this one. This is the first, truly good Star Trek film. It stands alone, unlike the others.

Excitement: Superior.
F/X: no contest.
Thrills and spills: A+
Fun: homerun
Cast: best EVER!
Laughs: no other movie is funnier, well maybe Voyage home.
Coolness: all the way for sure
Neato Ideas: lots and lots
Aliens: Actually, I loved the aliens in this movie BETTER than anything seen before. That weird dude at the bar in Iowa: funny and strange!

Some are complaining about the plot. Plot doesn't matter it you're not laughing, thrilled and having fun. At the same time I would argue the plot was better than anything in ENT or half the preceding Trek films. Plot is not as important as characters people can relate to, script, direction and editing. All of which were excellent in STar Trek.

1. KHAAAAN
2. First Contact
3. STXI
4. Undiscovered Country
5. Voyage Home
6. Generations
7. Search for Spock
8. Nemesis
9. TMP
10. Insurrection
11. The Final Frontier
