What's so great about Firefly?

Browncoats love Firefly because

1. It's not for everyone.

Though to hear some of them tell it, it should be. And to that I say, :nyah:

I mean, Starfleet? How lame is that? Starfleeters aren't allowed to be sarcastic or dress funkily at all.

Good. I knew there was a reason I liked them.

And as soon as I find my give-a-crap-about-sarcasm-and-funky-dress (to say nothing about all that 'hipster' crap), I'll be sure and drop in a telegram.

As for Gina Torres: Meh. Thumbs sideways. Although I admit she would make a great Klingon.

I think Gina Torres is one of the hottest women alive, and I can't understand it, because her looks are the direct opposite of the petite, fair features that I usually find attractive. But lord, that woman is gorgeous!

She's a very strong, principled woman who has no trouble taking command when necessary, is loyal to a fault, intelligent and witty, is beautiful and tall, and she carries a mean ass sidearm to boot.

Look, I've watched the show, all right? I'm not good with names. I'm still not sure about the names of all the characters on Enterprise.

@_@

I hope you are referring to Star Trek:ENT and NOT the crew of the ST:TOS Enterprise.

BTW, I just watched the entire disc one of the series DVD set in one sitting. Good times, good times.

Why did Zoe marry a wimp like Wash, though? Never did figure that out. Especially since, AFAIK, she didn't even like him when they first met.

Opposites attract. I'm a (believe it or not) generally quiet, warm, humorous type person (a lot like Wash in that regard, actually), and I consider Zoe immensely attractive, and I have dated some strong, principled women.

We figured some of it out.

We know that although Wash could be a spaz, when the situation got deadly serious he was a total pro.

But how much do you think we needed to learn about the characters in 3 months worth of episodes?

I think Mal was doing exactly what he wanted to be doing (or trying to, anyway) - living free, captain of his own little ship, following his own rules and personal code of honor, and trying like hell to avoid anyone who would mess with that freedom. On Serenity, cruising out in The Black, he could be free of the meddlesome government that he fought to be free of in the war.

They can't take the sky from him.

Speaking of which, Firefly also loses major points for having such nauseating music.
You misspelled "awesome" music...

Well, yeah. "The World's Best Space Sci-Fi Ever"? Please. If they had said, say, Battlestar Galactica, I could understand (though not agree with) that, even though I don't like BSG. But Firefly? Really?

Yes, really... or at least tied with Babylon 5.

I don't like Firefly, or much of Whedon's work, primarily because of the dialogue. I'm not saying he's not a talent, but he often superimposes his writer's voice on his characters (i.e. that trademark smart, sarcastic Whedonesque wit) and it just takes me out of the show.

Sure you're not thinking of Kevin Williamson? You just described my main irritation with Dawson's Creek.

When it comes to depth, planning and the question of whether or not something is great art, I reckon that Firefly mops the floor with BSG. That's not to say that the latter wasn't great at what it was good at, though, which to be frank largely boils down to presentation.

I enjoyed Firefly, but found it to be vastly overrated. (Like all of Whedon's works.) I think it's a fandom thing.
