What would you like to see in the 2010 SOTL Calendar?

Andrew, I would love to see you do something with the Enterprise from the 1978 aborted series Phase II. There have been several great versions here on this site that have impressed me (NBTrekie did an awesome job). There is something about that ship and series that has always fascinated me. As someone else mentioned here earlier, "What if..."

Oh wow, I didn't even notice who started this thread, but none other than thee AP. My previously shared view on painted artwork in the calendar aside, I still very much enjoy, and am always inspired by your work dude. Just love photo-real VFX, esp. when the subject matter is Trek ships. :)

And while I love the gatefold layout, the middle two-hole hanging system works very poorly IMO. The corners every year end up curling in on both sides. So either move the holes out toward the corners more, maybe even adding two more holes (kinda a hanging PITA, but so is curling art), or go with a traditional calander layout/hanging.

I know this isn't really what Mr. Probert was asking about, but I have to echo this concern. I'm tired of having to tape the corners of the calendar to the wall to hold back the curling.

And not having the dates laid out in a seven day week format makes it really not very useful as a calendar. You have to scan it for the correct date and week every time you use it.

Well, as I collect and hang about 8 or 9 sci-fi and comic-book calendars a year, the fact that SOTL is bullocks as far as being useful as an easy-glance calander does not bother me at all. It's more just for the sake of hanging fresh Trek art for me. The curling drives me nuts though, and as a collector, the art gets ruined with the tape you have to use to actually see the art.

My calendar in my office is frequently the subject of much derision and scorn. Essentially "Not only are you the biggest nerd I've ever met, but I can't even tell what day it is on this thing!" or words to that effect. :)

Hell with that. I use an appointment book. The calendar is purely aesthetic. I wouldn't mind if the dates went away altogether.

Yeesh. These people need more nerds in their life.

This is why I just get the Trek calendar to see the art, and have a Dillon Precision "Girls with Guns" calendar up for actual reference. Yeah, that's why That's up. Yup.

I used paper clips to stop the pages curling.

Not a bad idea, but PCs are a bit too unsightly for me tastes eh.

Now that we've seen the progress o this baby, I'd actually throw my 200% support to the cause of seeing the ship in the following link in the next calendar.

That is a nice ship, thanks for the heads-up on it. :)

That is a nice ship--I'd be 200% behind seeing that in the calender, too.

:p :p :p :p :p :p

In all seriousness, this does bring up something that had occurred to me, namely that if one wants to show ships people haven't seen before while avoiding the "we don't care because it's a fan design" problem, it might be a good idea to use concept designs from the various shows: Sternbach's original angular Voyager, Probert's original Galaxy with the shorter nacelles and different saucer seperation, the original Ambassidor class, the first version of the Reliant with the nacelles on top, etc, etc. Heck, there may even be enough to get a whole theme calender out of it. :D

Paper clips are a bit unsightly but they don't damage the picture like sticky tape.

I can see a Theme developing here. Alternate universe Starships. Already we got Star Trek books out this year dealing with Mirror and Myriad Universes. Why not a calender with the same theme.

That's why I buy two. Don't tell TPTB though or they'll just keep doing it for the sole reason to sell twice as many, taking advantage of the collector mind-set. Plus, I'm very careful with the hanging one, and use the smallest piece of tape just along the very edge then anchoring over the back. Can't even see unless you really looked for it. Still, PITA to have to do eh.

Heck, they put a bit of alternate stuff now-and-again in right now eh. I too want my own TOS.5 ENTERPRISE in the calander at some point. :)

I just recently got the gorgeous and pricey Art of Ralph McQuarrie book, and it's got a dozen on so pages on the unmade Planet of Titans film, and some of that subject material could be cool fodder for a calendar images.

How about one image being a very nice CG rendering of a formation of Franz Joseph's designs - a dreadnought escorting a convoy of transport/tugs with some destroyers escorting the DD?
