What would you do if you had a holodeck in your home?

Why do holograms talk to each other when there are no "real" people around to hear them?
Just part of the programmed simulation of reality?

When I'm playing Unreal Tournament (look, I'm old, and it's the only FPS I still have), and I'm in one section of the level, there are still characters fighting each other in other areas.

No, they used standard holodeck controls. There was no mention made in the episode to any special circumstances surrounding Moriarty achieving sentience, other than Geordi saying "make a challenge for Data"

He was an officer (one of senior officer) on the Federation flagship. I think we could safely assume that average holodeck for average user simply didn't have this kind of computing power, and may have in-build restrictions.

But like I said, the Hirogen were creating sentient holograms, and they had second-rate holodeck technology. I'm pretty sure all they said was "make prey worthy of the hunt" which led to sentient holographic rebels being created. And they even figured out on their own how to make themselves portable.

They are aliens, and they may messed up with both software and hardware.

GTA5 has an element of this. You will come across random conversations happening between NPCs all the time. Modern racing games simulate battles for position between cars elsewhere on the track, and some of them even simulate battles taking place when you're in menu screens. My racing driver even appears in other people's games in the current crop of Forza games.

Some of the NPC action in both GTAV and IV is downright hilarious. I really like when they intentionally walk out into oncoming traffic to be hit by a vehicle.

But then why does the flagship allow its holodecks to create sentient holograms on-demand? Seems a bit of a security flaw.

^ If all the holo-characters are basically avatars of the ship's computer, why was it "necessary" for the computer to create a self-aware Moriarty? Why would the computer create a entity entirely separate from itself to be the mind of the holo-chracter that the holodeck emitters were projecting?

Shouldn't the computer remain the mind of Moriarty the entire time?

It's most likely that the programs that are the real 'brains' of the holodeck characters reside on a dedicated cluster of computers that solely function for the support of the holodeck. Just like the EMH is a separate system from the main computer and the holodeck. Although they both maintain a network connection to the main computer.

If we ever are able to make anything resembling the holodeck. I am almost positive that we'll be able to make one that won't try to kill us every time there is a malfunction of one kind or another.

If I had a holodeck, I would make a program of my lying, cheating, soon to be ex husband and do terrible things to him.

Looks like a waste of time and energy. Why not rather do something positive and healthily enjoyable? I don't know what rocks your boat, but I am sure you can think of something.

Right now, causing him lots of physical pain would be quite enjoyable.

But it's not real. It's like hitting a punching bag with his face on it, or throwing darts at his picture.
You could say that about people who talk about creating holograms of other people and have sex with them. It's not real, it's like being with a blow-up doll with their face on it.

Still not going to stop people.
