Good.
Hence why we didn't discuss TNG in the DS9 forum. Well, we did at times. Off and on. Now and then...
Overall a yay from me so far, though I haven't caught up on all the episodes released so far. This is basically how I pictured a contemporary take on the TOS era. I do wish there was a bit more risk-taking with the storytelling. Perhaps we will see that as the season continues, or into the following season(s).

To me, SNW is undeniably what a modern day remake of TOS would be, but gets to have its cake and eat it too. It uses characters and continuity to tell stories that fit prior to TOS, but it also visually and culturally updates everything for today's audiences. I like the series, appreciate the both blatant and subtle nods to things to come in TOS, and I really like the entire cast. I even bought an Eaglemoss model of the SNW/DIS Enterprise because I like the redesign.
I hope SNW has a nice run and begins to really flesh out its era before a certain Academy simulator cheater takes over the ship...

I don't want pandering. I want stories about characters I'm interested in. Pandering is a cheap substitute for sincere interest.
Sometimes I'm in the mood for something new and different, sometimes I'm in the mood for something comfortable and familiar.
The Trek franchise is big enough to provide both.
First 5 episodes yeah. Last two not so yeah. But still better than Disco, and Picard. Amazing reviews, which leads us to question why cant Disco and Picard be more like SNW? Fingers crossed that the writers continue with star trek sci fi and not worthless dramatic nonsensical fantasy plots.
Trek is always the right combination of new(or new-ish) and shameless fan service and I'm happy with both. I don't need every meal to be an original chef's idea, I just want to feel satisfied and like the food was worth it.

So far, I find SNW daringly original, ambitious, and thoroughly interesting. There's nothing about it that feels safe to me, especially in a TV era defined by sober, slow-burn, serialized dramas (which I enjoy). SNW is the most I've enjoyed Star Trek since TNG, and it's not about nostalgia for me, either.
I feel like DSC successfully steered the franchise in a more serialized direction. Now that mode of storytelling has come to feel comfortably familiar for Star Trek, at least to me (a feeling bolstered by the general kindness and lovingness of DSC's most recent season), giving SNW an opportunity to feel fresh and sharp.
The thing is, I don't have any nostalgia for the original series. I can appreciate some things about it (Worf voice: "Nice matte paintings. Good ship."), but I have no warm memories for specific episodes or characters. Quite the opposite; I have some mildly traumatic childhood memories associated with flying pancake aliens. As the franchise diversifies its offerings for different audiences, I'm not sure I'm the target for SNW.
But it has totally grabbed me, and that's largely down to a magnificent cast. Unlike the Kelvin films, I don't feel like when Spock is onscreen that the story is saying, "Look, it's Spock! He's a famous pop culture figure! Love him!" and I don't feel SNW is being precious with the characters, stringing out character arcs because the showrunners feel beholden to certain end points. Everybody just feels wonderfully drawn. For me, the show has reached that Stargate SG-1 point where even a bad story is enjoyable because it's these people doing it. And there haven't been any bad stories.
The show is bizarre, brazen with its tonal shifts, thoughtful when it needs to be, and not precious with the franchise's past. It often works almost opposite how my nostalgic favorite TNG did things. Yet I love it.

That wasn't the point of the two shows. SNW is a deliberate episodic choice in addition to the serialized formats of DSC and PIC.
That way there is something for everyone.

If Kurtzman plays his cards right SNW could end up as sequel to DISC, then a prequel to TOS (with new seasons of Star Trek right before TOS) and then a sequel to TOS, (with new seasons of Star Trek set right after TOS.)
The episodes are hit or miss like Doctor Who. Some stories are great. Some not so much.
I prefer serialized stories these days. I feel like they go more in depth with the characters. Instead, what we get is a lot of time spent setting up the story, rather than character development.

Honestly I’m loving it so far even if some episodes have awkward pacing which waters down the storylines but I’m warming up to the characters and most of the storylines are entertaining. I still prefer Discovery but Strange New Worlds is getting there. It’s still only season 1. I think the show has potential to standalone on its own. It’s way better than the DISASTER that is Star Trek Picard. I’m just glad Picard is ending after season 3 after a disastrous two seasons while the superior shows like Discovery gets renewed for season 5 and I’m hoping SNW gets more than 3 seasons too.
