What characters, races, things would you have liked to have seen make a return visit to TNG?

I really liked Moriarty & would have loved the see more of him as well. Daniel Davis did a nice job with that role. (I enjoyed him as Niles on "The Nanny" as well)

They wanted Moriarty to return earlier and more frequently but they got tied up in litigation with the Conan Doyle estate for a few years...

First I thought you meant they wanted Moriarty to return after 'Ship in a Bottle' but did you mean they wanted Moriarty to come back sooner than season 6? That might have been interesting. However, I think 'Ship in a Bottle' is a nice episode, I wouldn't change history with the risk of losing that episode. On a TNG marathon that episode could be used as the series final episode, Barclay says "Computer, end program" and ending credits roll. I've done that once or twice. =)

They wanted him to return earlier than season six, and would have liked him to return more than once had not the issue with the Conan Doyle estate retaining rights and requiring a licensing fee caused an understandable unwillingness to reuse the character. Michael Piller also stated that the ending of "Ship in a Bottle" was the perfect sendoff, and vetoed a proposal to have him back in season seven.
