What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

People would've been asking 'if these guys were so important why haven't we ever heard of them?'
They could've eventually addressed that issue later on.

and questioning their use of cloaking devices before Balance of Terror. I know, because that's what Enterprise did with the Xindi and the Suliban.
And that has caused needless problems that still arise to this day.

But that worked out way better in the long run than Disco's Klingons, so I would've been okay with it.
It's been Hit & Miss IMO.

This is Star Trek fandom. There is never “the end of it.”
That's what fandom is about.

Same with a Terrorist stealing a StarShip and using it for their own purposes.
Hey, don't talk about Jim Kirk like that!

The Klingons are the least of my issues with Disco. (My issues with Disco are not huge.)

When Lora Johnson passed a way I did a decently deep dive on 70's and 80's fan history, both official and not. You know what was a very common thread? A WAR WITH THE KLINGONS IN THE 2250's!

Per Mike MacMahan, that moment is open to interpretation. When asked about it, he did NOT shut down any interpretations of it, and said that people are free to make of it what they like while also winking about it knowing exactly what it may mean.

"Listen, I'm not gonna tell the fans how to respond to anything ... Was I being a little stinker with that moment and knowing what I was doing? Yeah. I’m not dumb ... You can take that moment however you want, and talk to me about it in ten years [smiles].
I love that he's so upfront with "I knew EXACTLY what I was unleashing."

I'll raise you a controversial opinion inside of a controversial opinion!

I ship Chakotay and Seven of Nine, and prefer the pairing over Janeway/Chakotay. I also think Icheb could have been worked into something resembling an interesting character. There is a small but strong base of Trekkies for both of these points.

But I also have unpopular opinions within that fanbase: C7 and Icheb were both underdeveloped onscreen, and killing that relationship and Icheb respectively were understandable decisions that dont majorly impact my enjoyment of the new shows.

Furthermore, Seven's romance with Raffi is better written than any of her Voyager romances; and Elnor is basically a more interesting version of Icheb.

It's a controversial opinion inception! Or a "contraception!"

I still hold to the belief that the only other character Seven of Nine had chemistry with was The Doctor.

I always thought their My Fair Lady lessons about humanity was one of the best parts of character interaction on Voyager, since it was the "blind leading the blind" with a hologram trying to teach a Borg how to be more human.

Beyond that, I always loved that it was the Borg learning to be human who is shown to be more empathetic and human towards The Doctor than either Janeway or the rest of the "evolved" human crew. It is Seven of Nine that fights Janeway to give The Doctor his autonomy rather than doing the computer science equivalent of a lobotomy when the Doctor's program has problems dealing with his own choices.

I also think this is one of the most romantic moments Voyager ever did.

The original Star Trek was the first thing to really fire my imagination. Which is why I’m so disappointed in the current output.

I enjoy nostalgia to a certain degree, but CBS has went overboard.

Mixed bag

Yeah. I feel the same. I just don't see 10 year old watching and being inspired by DISCO or SNW.

On the other hand, PRO might inspire kids.

DISCO isn't targeted at 10 year olds. Of course, neither was TOS or TNG. The advantage TOS/TNG had was it was still wholesome enough the whole family could enjoy while DISCO or SNW are from the 21st century where entertainment for adults must have heavier profanity than "Damn" and the gore/violence be something some parents don't want their children exposed to.

Ultimately I blame the modern streaming format. Barely enough episodes a season to wet ones whistle and it's not easily accessible unless one has a Paramount+ subscription. Too many options exist today so why would a kid even seek it out?

Remember when Star Trek fandom was about bringing Star Trek back to television , period?
Yes, I do. I was so sad when Phase 2 was cancelled. Watching time and time again through the daily reruns of TOS.
