Was Ron moore trek's greatest writer

I'd say Ellison was one of the WORST Trek writers of all-time.

He had no idea about the show he was writing for. Apparently his "research" was a wee bit lax. Hence all the rewrites and his 40 years of whining.

He failed in his story assignment. Period. Had he been on staff, he probably would have been fired.

Part of being a professional is knowing how to write for the show you've gotten the assignment for.

Ellison. Brilliant fiction writer and average pitchman for the Geo Metro. Bad Trek writer. Not everyone can write Trek (or for any particular established show). Writing episodic TV and writing original fiction are two different galaxies. You gotta play in their sandbox or go on to the next thing.

^^^Harlan Ellison wrote excellent episodic TV. Soldier and Demon with a Glass Hand are still remembered, as is City on the Edge of Forever. On the other hand, there is an awful lot of highly professional writing that is disposable as used Kleenex. Worse, there are cases where their "sandbox" actually doubles as their litterbox.

Modern Klingons alone, being pretty universally attributed to Moore, prove he's not even competent. I despair of explaining the point to Klingon Klaptrap lovers.

Moore's episodes about Modern Klingons were good, it was only when other guys who didn't get them like Moore did wrote about them that they sucked. Unfortunately, we got more of the latter after awhile.

I don't hate the guy, but he made the Klingons too damned irritating for my tastes. By the time DS9 ended, I was sick to death of them.
I'm with you. They were so overused I was actually ticked off when I saw Enterprise's premiere featured a "Klingot..." :p

I thought Moore was a great writer, and I loved his respect for TOS. I wish he'd been given the ENTERPRISE assignment. I'm sure he would have shaken things up, and made a MUCH better show than what we got.

Moore was among many excellent writers that have worked for Trek over the years. He was particularly good when he worked with (gasp) Brannon Braga - the styles of those two generally seemed to mesh quite well.

Eh... I'm glad we got nuBSG though.

You have read Ellison's original version of "City", right? As opposed to the one which ultimately was greatly rewritten and filmed ...

His original version was good, but it would't have been Trek. Having Kirk be immobilized and have Spock have to be the one to make sure Keeler died would have destroyed his character.

He was deffintely one of the all time best Trek writers, along with Piller, Behr, Coon, Echevarria, Fontana, and Coto.

I think he's one of the best. I certainly love most of his work on DS9 which is my favorite show. I think he was a key player in forming the characters there, among other things.

Moore was one of the better TNG and DS9 writers, but the already mentioned TOS writers were better Trek writers.

Can't say if he's the best but I'd have to put him way up there at the top. In his interviews he sometimes refers to arc based storytelling...and I'm a big fan of that...thus then I'm a big fan of Ron's.

Well hell why not?? Sure he's my favorite...the best! I love his DS9 and nBSG work.

The best Star Trek writers : That would be Roddenberry, Gene Coon, Michael Piller, Peter Allan Fields, Robert Hewitt Wolfe, Fontana

Ron Moore wrote a few great episodes but he could also be quiet average, and he wrote some terrible episodes

What's much worse than his average episodes was his rudeness and arrogance to a number of well established scifi shows/fandoms, he has been know to call Larson's Galactica a Starwars rip-off while calling his own re-imagined series the best thing since Roddenberry's original Trek.

Ron Moore on Voyager

"I think the audience intuitively knows when something is true and something is not true. Voyager is not true. If it were true, the ship would not look spic-and-span every week, after all these battles it goes through. How many times has the bridge been destroyed? How many shuttlecrafts have vanished, and another one just comes out of the oven? That kind of BULLSH*TTING the audience I think takes its toll. At some point the audience stops taking it seriously, because they know that this is not really the way this would happen. These people wouldn’t act like this."

His comments on Voy seem quite legit. By the way, can I get a link to the full interview? I haven't read it in a long time.

He was one of the best.

Moore isn't responsible for their overuse. That would be Berman.
"Everyone loves Klingons" - Berman's reason for bringing on more Klingons in DS9s 4th season.

Nope. Why does it matter if City was rewritten to fit the series. Isn't that standard when a show uses non-staff writers? I wasn't commenting on Ellison's attitude.

I'm not really sure why he's upset. Since I don't care, it's no problem.

Moore, from all the information I've read, was the one responsible for devloping the Klingon culture.
This includes TNG.
