For whatever reasons, I never got around to Agatha All Along, so I hope that won't impact my following VQ too much. For me, a large part of the appeal here is seeing two of my favorite actors, Bettany and Spader, together in scenes as essentially themselves.

Fingers crossed this won’t be nostalgia driven navel gazing, like another Matalas driven show.
They said this is the conclusion of the Wandavision/Agatha All Along trilogy. I'm expecting as such, and don't see Nostalgia bait being a part of that. The show has also been reviewed well so far so I'm hopeful. I get the trepidation from Picard Season 3, but one thing going for it for me is this isn't a continuing show where they kicked half the cast out, so that's a plus.

Here is the bare minimum that you need to know version...

Remember Tommy and Billy? Well, Agatha All Along revealed that at the moment Wanda's hex dissipated, Billy used his Wanda Jr powers to transfer his soul into the body of a teenage boy that had just died in a car crash and he took over that body and became Wiccan.

At the end of the show, Billy used his powers to find Tommy's soul and put it into the body of another teen that just had drown, but he had no idea where Tommy was.

One can only assume that it was the magic that revived the bodies.

Seems like hair splitting.

The inclusion of
Jim Hammond is what set my radar off. He was originally an Easter egg in Captain America The First Avenger. A character, who in the MCU, has no connection to Vision outside of being a synthetic Being. Of course we've no idea if J.I.M. Is the same synthezoid we saw in CA:TFA
so how this is folded in to Vision's backstory remains to be seen.

I still don't see the link between that character and nostalgia bait. Probably 90% of mcu fans have no idea who that is and won't recognize them when they see them. Even most comics fans are unlikely to be all that nostalgic for them. Some notable historical status aside, we're talking Eternals levels of obscurity here. You don't include that for nostalgia bait. You either just to want to use the character or else it's just an easter egg.

The character is tied to Vision in the comics. It's nostalgia for fans of a certain age. (Raises hand)

Nostalgia for what?

I hated Picard season 3, too, but this situation is completely different. There is no 30 year old cast to reunite, no decades of popular lore to reference and I highly doubt Matalas had an old fanfic about Vision having conversations with Ultron inside his head laying around in a desk. He's not even getting a free hand for creating new characters because he's working the MCU machine mostly using already established characters and anyone new who shows up will still have to be approved by Feige so that they don't screw up future plans.

The only thing worth worrying about here is the basic execution of the storytelling, but even then 1 bad season doesn't prove he's incompetent and he's still not making the show by himself anyway.
If you want to get a better feel for what Terry Matalas is capable of, I would recommend checking out 12 Monkeys. Technically it is an adaptation of the movie, but it goes so far off from what the movie did that it's basically an original creation.

I watched the first episode; it was good. It's 5 a.m. in Türkiye right now; I'll watch the second episode when I wake up.

You’d think Ultron could pronounce “Edinburgh” correctly. :)
Should have guessed Captain Shaw was in this considering who the show runner is.

Here's one for you all: when Vis went to rescue Tommy and they started playing 'Calypso' my wife said to me "Why are we suddenly listening to John Denver?"

My best guess, and I'll be curious to see if others agree or have a differing opinion, is that it was an analogy to Theseus and the ship; it was 'singing to the spirit' of how Vision ceased being the ship and became the king.

I also laughed at Ultron quoting from the R.E.M. song.

This.

I am a huge fan of 12 Monkeys; it was brilliant in how it took the concept of the movie and ran with it for four seasons, and how the time-travel was pretty well thought out and didn't contradict itself.

The only time I had a problem was when Jennifer traveled to the future and met her 'old' self. If she left the current time-line, then she was 'missing' and could have aged into Future Jennifer.

Otherwise, great fuckin' show.

:techman:

I really need to give it another go, and watch to the end this time. I loved it, but lost track of it during the beginning of the final season and never got caught up before it ended.

I love how the two episodes jumped straight into the action without missing a beat. I certainly didn't expect Paladin tracking down Vision this quickly nor Vision (re)uniting with Tommy this early, but I'm grateful because that means I have no idea how the rest of the series will play out. Well, aside from Ultron trying taking full control and resuming his mission to wipe out humanity. You know, that ol' chestnut. Yes, yes, and Paladin's mysterious client (but anyone who knows the full casting knows who it is) drive to capture Vision.

The mindscape is a lot fun but it's a tragedy that we've already lost Jarvis to a noble but ill-fated self-sacrifice. No resurrections this time, to quote a certain purple scrotum. As much as I'm sorry to lose James D'Arcy already, I think that's for the best. His death shows the level of cunning of Ultron's slow takeover of Vision's mind.

For those who might be laughing at the ease of Tommy and Vision's escape, bear in mind Paladin was not only cocky enough to think he would win the fight, but also wouldn't have thought Vision would escape by any means other than flight. That said, I love the Paladin's dark code of honor, murdering his own sniper for killing a civilian and not hesitating to do the same to a sadistic guard who salivated at getting revenge.

Speaking of which, how the hell does a place like St. Mabyn's exist where such vile guards can readily and violently abuse mental health patients in the modern-day Britain? Are we to assume that this is some weird aftereffect of the Blip? Because that left turn at the beginning of the episode felt like it came from a dystopian film and not an MCU production.

I'm greatly enjoying White Vision's identity crisis and how he's trying to reconcile who he is and who he wants to be, regardless of what others might want him to be (the Stark AIs, Ultron, Tommy, Paladin) and as long as the show sticks with that core thread, I think we're in for another excellent series and a worthy conclusion to this trilogy. Also, I couldn't but notice that Jac Schaeffer has an executive producer credit and I wonder how much she was involved with the show (not much, I know, but maybe some kind of advisory role) or if it's entirely because of her showrunning of the first two shows and this is the conclusion?
