I know I'm, like, SUPER late to the party, but I wanted to add my 2 cents anyway:
I think it's fine. Like, I think it could be much better, but also much worse. It's inoffensive, really. Pretty much exactly like the CGI-model of the Enterprise. It's definitely far, far away from being as iconic or stylish as the original, and I'm sure in 5 years it will be mostly forgotten. But it looks like a reasonable "Enterprise"-bridge for a current day show.
Disco-bridge vs. JJbridge
What I find fascinating - very much like the CGI model of the ship itself - is that the DISCO-bridge takes far more details 1:1 from the original design than the JJbridge. But overall, the JJbrige "feels" much closer to the original. This one still is bulky, dark, and looks like a Berman-era bridge. Very in line with the rest of DIS' design language. Wheras the JJbridge managed better to be stylish, futuristic, and adventureous. (I'm not really a big fan of the Kelvin-timeline movies. But the production design was top notch!).
A few little nuggets I noticed:
- Looks very TRON-like
- It's obviously inspired by the Kirk-era bridge, not Pike's grey "the cage"-version. Shame. I really liked the light/blue-ish grey bridge with black details and bright, orange screens.
- I really like what they did with the red accents: Having them be light-stripes works relly well on screen
- I like that they carried over the colorful lights
- I wish they also added a top row of space-pictures the original had - this one feels a bit claustrophobic with the ceiling being comparatively lower to the overall volume
- Generally, I think they layout (consoles, railings, screen) is really, really well done. The problem is the walls - they look very uninspired
- I think the biggest flaw is the color-scheme. The surfaces are too dark, and the generic blue displays don't mesh that well with the red highlights. Much like the Discovery-bridge herself, the same layout would look a LOT better with brighter paint and more natural display colors
Final verdict:
Fine.
It ain't gonna' replace the original or come close. But it's obvious a lot of genuine care and thought went into it. Even if it's not super impressive (there aren't going to be many articles about "look at Kirk's iconic bridge re-imagined!" anywhere on the mainstream Internet) - it's a comppletely reasonable upate with quite a few clever ideas hidden in there.
