USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

Again, why's this being discussed at all? No matter how outdated or silly-looking the TOS design, its reuse exactly as is is not a matter of speculation - it is a repeating theme in the history of Star Trek the show, continuing half a century after its creation.

Moreover, its reuse exactly as is has always been a ratings gimmick. The gimmick won't work any other way. The only real hope of seeing an "updated" TOS design is if a ship like Kirk's is an integral element of an early story, written before the ratings start to plummet. And we've never gotten that sort of a story yet, but this time we just might.

I wouldn't be surprised if it shows up. Or at least a similar class ship. No way at all does it look like the TOS Enterprise like it has in other shows as a one off. The design as suggested likely will look closer TMP look with likely more detail because of filming quality. Assuming they do have it or a similar ship show up I expect that style of ship to show up more in a season 2 or even in season 1 if it does. That's CGI and/or model work they can reuse. They're not going to invest in it just to use it one time.

Because there's no good reason to think that the old TOS version will be reused by Discovery.

"They've always done it that way" doesn't mean jack where this show is concerned, as half the active topics in this forum attest.

As I keep saying (and will continue to say) The Constitution class ships of the 2260s aren't 'Model Ts' , with the right lighting and detailing, they stand up pretty well. There's this from ENT 'Through a Mirror Darkly'

Personally I think it looks okay next to the USS Discovery.
On a side note I wonder if they'll use the standard 23rd century bridge sounds?

You can keep saying that it holds up, but he'll never agree with you. Truth is, most people won't. I'd love to hear the old bridge sounds though.

I'm a design buff. And I find the USS Discovery to be overly angular, blocky and chunky, with too much surface junk going on. In that sense, it doesn't line up with the more streamlined, minimalist TOS aesthetic. That doesn't mean they couldn't be part of the same fleet, though.

The way stealth planes look very little like 'regular' jets. Maybe DSC's shape is so they can adapt a cloaking device.

She'll have nacelles closer to Discovery's for one thing (well two, shoosh), but the Constitution always suited longer ones.

The hull may be whiter, but still metallic and detailed, the newer more detailed antenna dish, thicker in places more than likely. And sporting the 2009 style window.

This is obviously super low quality compared the the actual level of effects they'll have in the show, but I think it proves that Connie's basic shape works just fine. It actually looks sleeker than the boxy Discovery. Just give both ships the same level of surface detail and it will be absolutely fine.

You're wrong. Discovery is a visual reboot of the TOS era, and so everything in that era will be updated but still harken back to what's come before. There is a reason every other federation ship in Discovery has boxy/rectangular parts/nacelles over the more cylindrical look we are accustomed to. New/casual fans might confuse two different ships that have similar body configuration and both with cylindrical body parts...

In the promo clip CBS did with the posters that have each character's eye looking through their respective insignia, the sequence for the TOS transporter can be heard. I know that it's just for a promo, but I'm hoping TOS sounds are sprinkled here and there.

Some made it into the last three movies, and you can hear them in TVH, TFF and TUC. It's evocative of that period, and hopefully they'll be here and there.

Eh, I think something along the lines of Vektor's Enterprise would work fine.

Sure it'd look quaint next to the Discovery ships, but even most casual viewers would accept it with a wink, I think.

If nothing else, it'll give the granddads in the audience the chance to proclaim, "that's the original Star Track ship."

"That's the one Dr. Spock was on!"

I know that some fans are emotionally attached to the TOS ship. That doesn't mean that when less invested viewers look at it they don't see a very old, outdated, simplistic design.

Same with, oh, the Jupiter II or the C57-D: I like Forbidden Planet even better than Star Trek and I love that saucer, but replicating it as the hero ship in a 2017 movie would tread close to parody (as did, for that matter, the Protector in Galaxy Quest - but then, the designers knew that).

Trufans are going to have to live with the fifty-eleven times that Trek has already done callbacks to the TOS since the 1987 reboots began. It ain't happening no more.
