Unseen TOS....

First thing I did was turn the lane-keeping assist off. The pre-collision warning went off yesterday evening when I went into a curve at a decent clip and for a second there was a car parked on the side of the street the sensor thought I was going to hit, but I was already moving in a curve as I turned. As soon as the parked car was no longer directly in front of me the collision warning stopped.

I have found the auto stop/start feature a bit weird, but you have to remember to turn it off every time you start the car. Fortunately I don’t get much stop-and-go traffic where I live so for now I don’t think about it much.

I’ve had this vehicle for only a day, but early impressions. Even in normal mode this thing is quick to get up and go. It feels quicker than my CrownVic (and it may well be), but also it’s not making the same sound so you’re lulled into thinking you not going fast only to check the speedometer showing you’re already past the speed limit. It has a nice ride. And I really like the steering—very direct and sporty feeling. I like the seating position and the view forward over those bulges on the hood—neat.

This morning was chilly. I need to look up to make sure how the seat warmers are enabled.

Upon reflection it’s interesting that my list of potential purchase was rather short. I have always had an eye on the automotive market leaving me with a reasonable grasp of what was out there. Seeing how I was accustomed to a fullsize car I did consider cars like the Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger and Ford Mustang, but when it came to being serious those fell off the list (it must be said I don’t like what they did to the 2024 Mustang, particularly the interior).

I had considered a Volkswagen GTI as I have long been a fan of GTIs, but presently VW has gone the near total digital control route on the GTI and I loathe that. I had seriously considered the 2025 Jetta GLI and 2024 Jetta with Sport Package as an alternative (both with manual transmission) because VW kept the instrumentation and switchgear more conventional which I appreciated. So if I hadn’t gotten a Bronco Sport I probably would have gotten a Jetta with manual transmission.

But I found myself drawn to the Bronco Sport as my first choice and I managed to get a deal I was comfortable with, so thats what I went with.

Be really careful with that auto stop/start business. Any mechanic worth his salt will tell you that the absolute worst thing you can do to an engine is start it. The greatest amount of wear and tear from torquing the engine to life occurs at this time. The fact that anyone thought it was a good idea to do this on a regular basis mystifies me.

Further, if you do have a lot of stop-and-go traffic, you will wear out the battery faster than the alternator can recharge it and you’ll wind up with a dead battery really quick. It is a patently idiotic feature.

Running errands this morning and went to see Mum and Dad in Rosemount Cemetary. Coming back I took a short jaunt on the highway in sport mode…

This little puppy goes(!), at least thats how it feels by seat-of-the-pants impressions. I was at 140 kph. in seemingly no time. And it felt very composed and planted on the highway—didn’t feel at all trucky.

I love the steering on this and the firm supportive seats—rather German like.

I think my Dad would have liked this!

Okay, sorry for the triple posts. Back more to the proper thread subject at hand. There are things I have to sort out to get back to envisioning and modelling Unseen TOS elements.

I’ve got to get my ass in gear and setup my “work station” so to speak. The room that will serve as my “office” is painted so now I have to get my desk in there. I saw one online I like and I just have to order it. At work there is a chair I like so no problem picking that up.

Once the desk and chair are in I can setup my computer and printer again. But now the annoying part: although SketchUp Pro is installed and runs nicely on my M3 iMac the Maxwell Render I installed is not connecting with it the way it did on my old 2011 21.5 iMac (that my sister inadvertently let Got Junk haul away  ). I also lost my copy of Adobe CS4 when I lost my old iMac. :wah:

Okay, so I’ll try using Affinity Pro because no way in hell am I paying Adobe any subscription and allowing them the possibility of accessing my work without my permission. And if I can’t get Maxwell to connect with SketchUp then I might have to try (and learn) another rendering program.

*Sigh*

A BIG step closer to getting back on track. Now have my new desk and chair in place in my new den. And this morning I hooked up my printer and M3 iMac. I still have to install Affinity Pro to replace my lost Adobe CS4 that went away with my dear departed 2011 iMac. I also have to sort out my 3D rendering software issue.

Note: I just noticed I had dropped a cable on the floor under the chair.

Looks cozy and I approve of the decor (a lot of mid-century modern)!
I was just drawn to that style. I find a lot of contemporary furniture chunky, or bulky if you will—not a lot of pieces fill up a room. This style looks fresh yet also a bit retro. The “leggy” furniture also makes it easier to sweep or mop underneath as opposed to having to move furniture to get behind it. As for the colours I went for something rather warm and welcoming with splashes of colour.

Interestingly each room has a slightly different vibe. The living area is somewhat more urban. The bedroom is rather more rural even with the modern furniture. And the den/office is cooler with a techie vibe (when it’s finished).

My last post regarding an actual model for this project was Oct. 28, 2023(!)—six pages back.

This has been a hell of a year. My personal life has been a series of seismic shifts this past year even as I still managed to do quite well at work in my day job (Tech Consultant at the local Staples). I’m not sure how I managed that considering everything outside of work.

Nonetheless it’s time to try focusing back on this project. The Klingon scoutship, originally unseen in “Errand Of Mercy” is the last design I modelled.

For the remainder of Season 1 there remains the referenced Archon from “Return Of The Arcons” and the Valiant referenced in “A Taste Of Armageddon.” I also stated, more than a year ago, possibly revisiting the design for the old Valiant referenced in “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” I need to tackle these before moving on to Season 2.

The Archon could be a reuse of the old Earth cruiser I envisioned for the backstory of the Earth/Rimulan War although a different design would be interesting. The Valiant from “A Taste Of Armageddon” can’t be a reuse because the ship is from only fifty years in the past. Nonetheless since both ships are only referenced and not actually seen in their respective episodes they could or would appear but briefly as images on a overhead bridge viewscreen.

Side note: I still cannot believe my sister lost my trusty old iMac. It remains a serious WTF! moment whenever I think about it.

Something similar happened to a member of Hobbytalk who had been in ill health …no sooner than he died she chunked all his models.

I bet if he threw out her jewelry there would have been hell to pay.

The worst visual was the the D-7 explosion that looked like a charge under mats.

Trying something out. Trying for something looking older and a bit clunky.

I’m not entirely sold on this idea, but it might be massaged into something workable. Size wise it could be about the size of the Enterprise’s secondary hull. I envision a lot of bulky and intrusive machinery aboard so that it’s not that spacious even for a small crew. I’m actually tempted to eliminate the lower nacelle.
interesting. i recently modelled a similar idea intended as a TOS era colony escort

Wow, what a trip! I just spent an hour or so this morning going back over this thread. A lot of cool stuff and interesting discussions here.

Things are settling down at work and personally so I can get back to this project soon. I still have a couple of things for Season 1 to be worked out then on to Season 2.

"Where No Man Has Gone Before" - I've already tackled the Valiant, but as much as I like what I came up with I think I will revisit the design. I think it should look a bit more retro.

“The Corbomite Maneuver” – Balok's ship the Fesarius is impressive even if we don't get a really good look at it. Ditto with his small scout craft. But maybe it might have been nice to have seen something of a schematic of Balok's ship on one of Spock's monitor screens. I sort of bypassed this ship and really should take a closer look at it.

“Charlie X” – I've already tackled the Antares. But does the Thasian ship really have to be just a blob of light? I might have a try at rethinking this.

“Balance Of Terror” – I have one more Earth ship design idea to explore, just for fun.

“The Return Of The Archons” – The century old lost starship Archon. Like the Columbia in “The Cage” and the Valiant in WNMHGB it isn’t really necessary to the story to know what the Archon looks like, but we’re curious.

“A Taste Of Armageddon” – The second lost starship Valiant (not the same one mentioned in WNMHGB).

“Metamorphosis” – Zefram Cochrane’s space warp prototype.

"The Doomsday Machine" - Is the Constellation really supposed to be identical to the Enterprise or could that odd registry number mean we could be seeing a variation?

“Friday’s Child” – Our first time seeing a Klingon D7 battle cruiser or could this be a different design?

“The Trouble With Tribbles” – Cyrano Jones’ scout ship. Technically we don't really have a chance to see Jones' ship, but we're curious. That said it could be just a reuse of Mudd's ship from "Mudd's Women."

“Bread And Circuses” – The wrecked survey ship Beagle. This perhaps could be a reuse of the design used for the Antares.

“Journey To Babel” – The mysterious Orion marauder.

“A Piece Of The Action” – The old starship Horizon.

“By Any Other Name” – The Kelvan ship.

“The Ultimate Computer” – More than any other episode this makes us wonder what other Federation starship designs could be in service. Also the Woden shouldn't be a reused Botany Bay. And does the station have to be a reuse of station K7 from “The Trouble With Tribbles?”

“Spock’s Brain” – A closer look at Kara’s ship.

“The Tholian Web” – A closer look at the Tholian webspinner. And could the Defiant have been a different class of starship?

“Let That Be Your Last Battlefield” – Does Bele's ship have to be invisible? And could Lokai have stolen a different kind of Starfleet shuttlecraft?

“The Way To Eden” – Revisiting the space cruiser Aurora because a reused Tholian ship is silly.

i know i am years late to the party and commenting on these things as i am reading through the thread might be annoying. but i am at the phaser rifle part and i see you used an AK pattern rifle as a kind of template for updating it. but it occurred to me that the og phaser rifle resembles a steyr aug in a lot of ways. three tubes arranged in a triangle, barrel comes out of the top cylinder, most of the bulk is behind the main grip, barrel is exposed ....

of course, part of your premise, at least with the ships, is things the designers on the showw might have been familiar with and the aug didn't exist yet, so...
