^ Yeah, I'd rather they had done more red/black/metallic (not 'grey').
Yeah, that's really good work.

That's been remarked upon elsewhere, but I'm not sure it can't be explained more simply by the effects of light and shadow in that shot.Just looking at the full pic of the Kelvin again. If you follow what seems to be the ship's forward centreline (ie. passing through the "dash" between NCC and 0514 in the registry number) back through the bridge, then it looks like the entire dorsal nacelle/pod unit is canted or offset slightly to port. Could it be steerable, as per some nacelle related rumors from a few months back? (or have I been staring at the picture a bit too long?)
It just seems to me that the ship's forward centreline doesn't appear to quite line up with what appears to be the centreline of the pylon behind the bridge.
If you gave Gene the same budget, I am certain he'd have improved them too.

Nice!
Very ShatnerKirk pose

...and I like the concept of phaser banks/ torpedo launchers that retract intothe hull.

Yep, and it's very easy to see how Ben Finney gets jettisoned with the ion pod. Kirk's armrests look like they don't have much room to...well...rest his arms.
Wonder how many times he accidentally activates something?![]()
Well, the Kelvin is from 20 or so years before the Enterprise. Perhaps at the time they lacked the ability or power to generate continuous-beam phasers. They look rather like point-defense weapons to me, which brings up my other point - those streaking shapes look very much like fighters to me, and if you look at the blurred area on the right side of the Kelvin's saucer we seem to be seeing through one of these fighters as it passes through the foreground of the shot. Cloaking devices?...and I like the concept of phaser banks/ torpedo launchers that retract intothe hull.
This is something I am curious about.![]()
I wonder if J.J. and crew have completely replaced the concept of Phasers and Photon Torpedoes with somewhat of a mix of the two, furthermore I wonder if they have done away with the traditional weapons of Star Trek completely, giving each race a unique armament to better distinguish them from the Federation.
In the close up screen of the Kelvin, we can see the pop-up turrets firing what seems to be short bursts of blue energy which I will refer to as "bolts'. Assuming the Kelvin has no other weapons, the bolts look like a mix of a phaser and a photon torpedo (reminiscient of the Defiants weapons). They do not seem to have a physical capsule like a Photon Torpedo does, nor are they a continuous beam of energy like a Phaser. I think by doing this you could eliminate the somewhat confusing situation that arises when attempting to determine the exact role of Phasers and torpedos, something that has never been very clear for me.
In the first paragraph I mentioned my assumption that J.J. and crew might attempt to give each race a unique set of weapons. Now all of this is purely speculation, but if you look at the full shot of the Kelvin you can see what looks to be a large group of missiles heading towards it. Notice that they seem to leave a faint green in their wake, looking at the close shot of the Kelvin you can see a very faint green trail that looks to be leading towards one of the explosions located slightly to the right of the center bolt turret. Assuming the Romulan's are the only race to use missilies (highly unlikely), it would give them a distinctly different arsenal than the Federation, and definatly be more creative than having the Federation firing the Blue/Orange beams and blobs while the Romulan's are firing the green ones.
I think its safe to say that much like the rest of this movie, much of the tradional Trek space combat 'mechanics' are going to change with J.J.'s reboot of the series. I for one am approaching this movie with an open mind, interested to see what some fresh talent can do for Trek.

I also remember something AICN posted earlier this year about being shown a shot of the Kelvin orbiting a raging star. If the Romulans ARE time travelers, maybe they did a slingshot maneuver around the star, taking out the Kelvin (which might've been doing a stellar survey or what-not) when they arrived in the past. The yellowy glow on the left of the image seems to indicate a nearby star as well.
Well, the EW article describes Kirk and Spock boarding a Romulan "interstellar cruiser" that's "part Death Star, part Mordor". Sounds fairly significant-sized to me.(then again who's to say he has a large powerfull starship at all).
About the broken wrist thing... could that be the Star Wars part they are talking about? (When Luke gets his hand choped off)lol, just kidding.
Yes, this movie looks really promising. So no gold shirt for Kirk? Or is it because he's not captain yet? Also, with the pic of the crew together, who else think Pine resembles Scott Bakula in a way? (It's the hair-do that made me think of this)
Those cannon assemblies look like they function like a CIWS on a modern aircraft carrier. Perhaps in the era of the Kelvin, shield technology isn't as common place, or is problematic, therefore those weapons are designed to take out whatever gets through.
