U.S.S. Kelvin pic! (and more -- large images)

Great pictures! I'm starting to get excited for this movie again! Nero looks good as a baddie, though not as intimidating as he looked in the delta poster. In the picture that has the entire main crew except for Spock, Pegg and Pine look spot on. The Kelvin pictures looks great, and I like the concept of phaser banks/ torpedo launchers that retract intothe hull. The full bridge picture is definately... different. It's not bad, but it'll definately be a change. I'm not entirely sold on it yet, but I'm not going to let that ruin the movie for me. Overall, this keeps looking better and better!!

Just looking at the full pic of the Kelvin again. If you follow what seems to be the ship's forward centreline (ie. passing through the "dash" between NCC and 0514 in the registry number) back through the bridge, then it looks like the entire dorsal nacelle/pod unit is canted or offset slightly to port. Could it be steerable, as per some nacelle related rumors from a few months back? (or have I been staring at the picture a bit too long?)

It just seems to me that the ship's forward centreline doesn't appear to quite line up with what appears to be the centreline of the pylon behind the bridge.
That's been remarked upon elsewhere, but I'm not sure it can't be explained more simply by the effects of light and shadow in that shot.

Re: U.S.S. Kelvin pic!

About the broken wrist thing... could that be the Star Wars part they are talking about? (When Luke gets his hand choped off) :) lol, just kidding.

Yes, this movie looks really promising. So no gold shirt for Kirk? Or is it because he's not captain yet? Also, with the pic of the crew together, who else think Pine resembles Scott Bakula in a way? (It's the hair-do that made me think of this)

Nice!

Airbrush city. Almost looks like a CGI Spock.

If both Spocks are so airbrushed in the film, you would have to admit it would make Vulcans seem much more alien...

This is something I am curious about.

I wonder if J.J. and crew have completely replaced the concept of Phasers and Photon Torpedoes with somewhat of a mix of the two, furthermore I wonder if they have done away with the traditional weapons of Star Trek completely, giving each race a unique armament to better distinguish them from the Federation.

In the close up screen of the Kelvin, we can see the pop-up turrets firing what seems to be short bursts of blue energy which I will refer to as "bolts'. Assuming the Kelvin has no other weapons, the bolts look like a mix of a phaser and a photon torpedo (reminiscient of the Defiants weapons). They do not seem to have a physical capsule like a Photon Torpedo does, nor are they a continuous beam of energy like a Phaser. I think by doing this you could eliminate the somewhat confusing situation that arises when attempting to determine the exact role of Phasers and torpedos, something that has never been very clear for me.

In the first paragraph I mentioned my assumption that J.J. and crew might attempt to give each race a unique set of weapons. Now all of this is purely speculation, but if you look at the full shot of the Kelvin you can see what looks to be a large group of missiles heading towards it. Notice that they seem to leave a faint green in their wake, looking at the close shot of the Kelvin you can see a very faint green trail that looks to be leading towards one of the explosions located slightly to the right of the center bolt turret. Assuming the Romulan's are the only race to use missilies (highly unlikely), it would give them a distinctly different arsenal than the Federation, and definatly be more creative than having the Federation firing the Blue/Orange beams and blobs while the Romulan's are firing the green ones.

I think its safe to say that much like the rest of this movie, much of the tradional Trek space combat 'mechanics' are going to change with J.J.'s reboot of the series. I for one am approaching this movie with an open mind, interested to see what some fresh talent can do for Trek.

Well, the Kelvin is from 20 or so years before the Enterprise. Perhaps at the time they lacked the ability or power to generate continuous-beam phasers. They look rather like point-defense weapons to me, which brings up my other point - those streaking shapes look very much like fighters to me, and if you look at the blurred area on the right side of the Kelvin's saucer we seem to be seeing through one of these fighters as it passes through the foreground of the shot. Cloaking devices?

I also remember something AICN posted earlier this year about being shown a shot of the Kelvin orbiting a raging star. If the Romulans ARE time travelers, maybe they did a slingshot maneuver around the star, taking out the Kelvin (which might've been doing a stellar survey or what-not) when they arrived in the past. The yellowy glow on the left of the image seems to indicate a nearby star as well.

Yeah, the idea of point defense turrets had crossed my mind, and I was thinking of tying that into the Romulan missile interpretation. The possibility of those objects being small scout/strike ships is something I had considered, but they just seem so small that I never bothered to take it any further. I guess they could be a single pilot ship, with a small main weapon. The Romulan's could probably get away with using such small craft given the fact that they are supposedly from the 24th Century, which would give them a large technological advantage over the Kelvin. Any attempt by the Kelvin to intercept a 24th Century Romulan Warbird based on what we have seen in TNG/DS9 would probably leave them in a pile of space debris in under one minute, and thats assuming Nero is not in command of something more powerful. (then again who's to say he has a large powerfull starship at all).

my theory is that kirk was the commander of a smaller ship , and very possibly was at this time had rank of commander or even captain.
the ship was attacked and his gold shirt didnt survive but he did.
enterprise rescues him but at the same time something happens to pike
so kirk takes command.

i like the bridge except for the standing console to the side.
that just looks silly .

After looking at the Kelvin attack pics, I dug out the E construction spoiler pic, and there appear to be similar door/covers arranged around that "flat pan" structure that the bridge sits on. Perhaps rebooted standard Fed weapon system?

Those cannon assemblies look like they function like a CIWS on a modern aircraft carrier. Perhaps in the era of the Kelvin, shield technology isn't as common place, or is problematic, therefore those weapons are designed to take out whatever gets through.

Or maybe in 'Star Trek' there is no such thing as shield technology at all?
