TUC: Collectors Edition Question

Finally got to watch the first DVD release of TUC: its Nanclus. I've made an MP3 so we can all hear it. I've put the original audio followed by two slowed down versions. Valeris' mouth is clearly saying Nanclus as well. The "clus" is quite distinctive, and I dont see or hear any trace of the alledged "th" sound...

As I said much earlier in the thread, using a slightly different take in the DVD SE probably meant that she delivered a different version of the line as well.

But as also mentioned much earlier, the line does not feature at all in the DVD SE, or rather it cuts off at "Romulan Ambassador". So that point is moot.

Was anyone actually claiming to have heard the "and others" line in the original cinema-shown theatrical cut anyway? All I've seen is Oso going by his original DVD release (the same one I've just posted a soundbite from). Forgive me if I'm missing your point Therin.

First: Thanks for uploading this!

Second: Your slowed down version makes it even clearer to me that it's "and others". I can clearly hear the phrase starting with an "a", there is a "th" in the middle, and an "rs" in the end. And it has THREE syllables.

"Nanclus" would have started with an "N" sound and would have had a distinct "cl" sound somewhere inbetween, but there is none.

If it really was just "Nanclus", the phonetic structure would be completely different! Unless it was "and Nanclus", which wouldn't make any sense.

I have an HD recording which is the theatrical cut, and it appears to be the same scene ... I hear and see "and others" there as well!

^^
You're definitely hearing it wrong, probably because Spock and Valeris do not say "Nanclus" at the exact same beat, resulting in some odd overlap. Listen to the whole clip again--it's absolutely "Romulan...Ambassador...Nanclus."

Neither actors are enunciating well on that word, but there's no way it's "and others", and given that the script says "Nanclus" and I heard "Nanclus", I'll stick with my ear and Occam's Razor. :)

Yeah, you're getting three syllables from Spock starting "Nanlus" just a beat ahead of Valeris. I noticed that the first couple times through on the recording and had to relisten a few times. So, I can see your syllables arguement, but "others" still isn't in there.

However, my next question is, why are we still doing this? We are all convinced we hear "Nanclus" and Oso is concvinced that he hears "and others", and none of us are going to sway. Should we really still be trying to pursuade each other?

Yeah, where is the fun in convincing others to adopt our pov?

Much more fun to go around and around in circles. ;)

You are right, there is no point in discussing this topic any further. Although it is beyond me how anyone can hear "Nanclus" where I hear "and others", I think we should leave it just there ... five lights for you and four lights for me.

I'm with you. ;)

So am I. I can't claim to be an expert on the various TUC permutations, but this version I've seen a million times. She says the same thing, with the same inflection and lip movement, every time. :)

So, would it help if I said that I brought my room mate in, who has never seen the movie before, and had him sit down and listen to the audio clip, without telling him what he's listening for, and he came up with something pretty close to "Nanclus"?

They say: '... and others.' This is quite clear.

Even the German dubbed version has them say: '... und andere.'
