TUC: Collectors Edition Question

Interesting that they cut out Nanclus' name.

Are you sure that his name has ever been mentioned? I know, most people think that Valeris said "the Romulan Ambassador Nanclus", but I could swear she said "the Romulan Ambassador, and others".

In the original cut, Spock and Valeris both say, "Romulan ... Ambassador ... Nanclus."

That is how I remember it, too.

I definitely remeber them saying 'Romulan... Ambassador... Nanclus' in the earlier cuts. Mainly because this is one of the only times in the film he's named at all.

I can be wrong, but didn't the President of the UFP address him by name in the office-scene?

No. The only time he's mentioned by name is during the mind meld sequence.

I'm pretty sure he says "And what is the position of the Romulan government, Ambassador Nanclus?" during the scene with the Klingon Ambassador in the president's office.

Yes, the line you quote is in the '1st office scene' AND
they do say 'Nanclus' in the meld scene according to the script.

Of course, that won't convince some who hear it the other way.

I just took another look at the mind meld scene, and it's definitely "The Romulan Ambassador, and others"! Watch Valeris' mouth, you can clearly read it from her lips if you can't hear it.

As for the Office Scene, the President is adressing the Romulan as "Ambassador Nanclus".

It isn't "and others" it's "Nanclus" but that is precisely why Meyer elected to go with the visual and cover over the name... Because a lot of people didn't recognize the name from earlier.

Please, take a closer look at Valeris' mouth during that scene. You can clearly see her mouting the words "and others". Especially the "th" in "others" makes it very clear. You can also hear it, if you pay close attention.

^Highly likely the dialogue was looped over Valeris's line for the feature film (and VHS), ie. naming Nanclus, but if a slightly different take was used for the new twin-disc DVD version, with the newly-added flashbacks of conspirators' faces, the line might not have been relooped this time.

Actually, the line was dropped alltogether in the collectors edition.

I just checked the single disc version, and even the subtitles say "and others". Apart from that, you can clearly hear and see her say it. There is no way she's saying "Nanclus".

Let's see what the original script, courtesy of The Gigantic Collection of Star Trek Minutiae, has to say. Granted, in this version, Valeris (still called Saavik) caves without the mind meld, and Cartwright is called Donald, but the dialogue appears the same as in the mind meld version.

Are you all so naive? Everyone who
stands to lose from Peace.

I don't care what the script says ... in the movie it's different, like so many other things that are different from the script!

Would you all please go and actually TAKE A LOOK at the scene in question? And listen carefully? Please stop quoting scripts or false memories!

Also id like to know who played Martia, she was fine as hell! (In her almost human form)

If only there were some way to find out... some place you could type in a few words and get your answers. Some kind of engine for searching... Alas... too fantastical to be true...

I heard Nanclus each and every time I've seen the movie. Besides, Kirk is looking for specific names. Spock wouldn't have just thrown "And others" out there, would he?
