Trek writers original works

I know this will probably never happen, but I just want to put the bug in the TrekLit authors' ears that if they ever decided to collaborate on an original Star Trek-esque space opera series in the vein of the kinds action/political thriller stories they were telling during this TrekLit golden age of 2001-2021, or on contemporary real-world versions of such stories, I think there might be an audience. :)
This is something I've been pushing for for years. I would love to see a collaborative science fiction universe created by Trek authors.

Airside, my new crime thriller novel, is now available for pre-order from Welbeck Publishing...

Crazy 8 Press, which is run by Peter David, Michael Jan Friedman, Robert Greenberger, Glenn Hauman, Aaron Rosenberg, Russ Colchamiro [the only non-Trek writer], and Paul Kupperberg, has released several series of original anthologies, all of which have included them, and other Trek writers like @KRAD, @Dayton Ward, Kevin Dilmore, Geoffrey Thorne, Ilsa J Bick, @William Leisner.

The latest from Crazy 8 Press is an anthology co-edited by veteran Trek writer Peter David, along with Kathleen O. David, called The Fans are Buried Tales. It's a nerdy version of The Canterbury Tales, as a convention in Maryland is snowed in by an unprecedented, massive blizzard, and some cosplayers go to the bar and tell stories in character for who/whatever they're cosplaying as.

Inspired by Farpoint 2003 -- which was, in fact, snowed in, leaving folks stranded in the hotel for a couple of days after the con ended -- Peter & Kath put together this anthology, which was supposed to debut at Farpoint 2022. However, Farpoint's COVID policy -- which was to not require that attendees be vaccinated -- led a big chunk of their author guests, including Peter (who has significant health conditions that make being around unvaccinated people incredibly dangerous) & Kath, pulling out of the con.

So in lieu of selling copies to Farpoint attendees, he's started a Kickstarter. If you go there and search for "the fans are buried," you'll find the anthology, or check me out on Facebook (link in my sig) where I've been pimping it mercilessly.

Among the contributors are the following Star Trek prose stylists:
  • Rigel Ailur (The Amazon's Tale)
  • Peter David (The Robin Hood Fan's Tale)
  • Keith R.A. DeCandido (The Carpet's Tale)
  • Michael Jan Friedman (The Baseball Fan's Tale)
  • Robert Greenberger (The House Stark Fan's Tale)
  • Robert T. Jeschonek (The Dadaist's Tale)
  • John Peel (The Mash-Up Fan's Tale)
  • Aaron Rosenberg (The Great British Detective's Tale)
In addition, there are stories by Andy Allard, Laura VanArendonk Baugh, Glen Cadigan, John J.X. Cihon, Paige Daniels, Jo Duffy, C.J. Espinoza, Mary Fan, Rande Goodwin, Ian Harac, Susan Hillwig, Brenda Huettner, Steve Nagy, "Uncle" Wes Nicholson, Susan Staneslow Olesen, Martin A. Perez, Josh Pritchett, Eugene Ramos, D.M. Rasch, Steven L. Rosenhaus, James Ryan, Isaac Sher, R.P. Steeves, Patrick Storck, Ian Randal Strock, Denise Sutton, Raphael Sutton, John Trumbull, Christopher J. Valin & Steve Beaulieu, and Bev Vincent.

This anthology is tremendous fun, and I strongly recommend you consider supporting it!

Open Road Media has released an e-book edition of Vonda McIntyre's Hugo & Nebula Award winning post-apocalyptic novel Dreamsnake. I've been curious about this one for a while, but I hadn't gotten a chance to read it before now since the paper version is out of print, and until now there hadn't been an e-book edition.

The Hugo and Nebula Award–winning novel from the New York Times–bestselling author of The Moon and the Sun.

On an Earth scarred by nuclear war, Snake harnesses the power of venom to cure illnesses and vaccinate against disease. The healer can even ease patients into death with the power of her dreamsnake. But she is not respected and trusted by all, and when she tries to help a sick nomad child, the frightened clan kills her dreamsnake.

Ashamed of being misjudged and grieving the loss of her dreamsnake, Snake has one choice to maintain her livelihood: she must travel to the city, which jealously guards its knowledge. And before she faces the prejudices and arrogance of the people there, Snake must make her way across a barren desert, surviving storms and radiation poisoning, helping those she can—all while a madman stalks her every move . . .

Just announced: RUNNING HOME TO SHADOWS: Memories of TV's First Supernatural Soap from Today's Grown-Up Kids. A collection of nostalgic essays about growing up as a DARK SHADOWS fan back in the day. And, yes, I absolutely contributed to this book. How could I not?

Here's the official description, posted today:

Announcing Becky Books’ newest publication, arriving late April-early May!
RUNNING HOME TO SHADOWS: MEMORIES OF TV’S FIRST SUPERNATURAL SOAP FROM TODAY’S GROWN-UP KIDS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
School’s out, Barnabas is IN!
They were a generation all their own, the army of children who ran home from school to watch Dark Shadows, TV’s very first supernatural soap. A breed apart, they set aside the worship of mundane pop stars to follow vampires, witches, and werewolves. From 1966 to 1971, they were daytime Monster Kids…and today they have stories to tell.
Writer-editor Jim Beard has gathered these grown-up kids together in this tome to tell those tales. Their experiences are sometimes tragic and terrifying, yet also uplifting and inspirational, but above all, Dark Shadows touched them so deeply as to leave an indelible impression on their lives that lasts to this day.
Return to Collinwood to brave the stormy nights and rainswept days of yore to listen to this coven of writers spin yarns of childhood encounters with Barnabas, Angelique, Quentin, Vicky, Maggie, and their compatriots. Cross the threshold of the Old House, take a seat by the crackling fire, and make yourself comfortable to the strains of maudlin music issuing forth from the gramophone—the ghosts of the past are about to arise in RUNNING HOME TO SHADOWS. Won’t you join us?
Edited by Jim Beard with Charles R. Rutledge
Cover Illustration by Mark Maddox with Logo Design and Formatting by Maggie Ryel
Foreword by Kathryn Leigh Scott
Featuring Essays by Greg Cox, Kathleen O’Shea David, Mark Dawidziak, Dave Dykema, Bob Freeman, Ed Gross, Nancy Holder, Tina Hunt, Katherine Kerestman, Mark Maddox (with Ed Catto), Elizabeth Massie, Kimberly Oswald, Martin Powell, Dana Pride, Mark Rainey, Michael Rogers, Charles R. Rutledge, Chris Ryan, Frank Schildiner, Duane Spurlock, and Jeff Thompson.

GraphicAudio has posted the cover and blurb for the second installment of TANGENT KNIGHTS, my original audio drama trilogy inspired by tokusatsu heroes (mainly Kamen Rider and Super Sentai, but there are some Ultraman homages as well). Book 2 will be released in digital download format on June 27, with MP-3 CDs available in mid-July.

GraphicAudio’s spectacular original super-heroic series powers on to new heights of action and intrigue, available in no other format!

In a world where communication with parallel Tangent Earths has brought a disruptive influx of new beliefs and scientific innovation, college-student and fangirl Corazon Kagami continues to discover astonishing new facets to the abilities she’s unexpectedly acquired in the accident that transformed her into Tangent Knight Caprice, the foremost of a growing ensemble of armored super-warriors very much like the heroes and villains of her favorite tokusatsu shows.

Earth-shattering revelations about her technology magnate mother Morgan Herrera and her cyborg security team Fireforce have put Cory on the side of Matrix, the interdimensional law enforcement agency tasked with bringing Morgan to justice. Daniel Vajra, the Tangent Knight called Tempest, is increasingly driven by his pursuit of vengeance against those responsible for his sister Meera’s death, and an astonishing confrontation with Fireforce’s powerful new warrior pushes him over the edge. Tempest’s desperate use of dangerous, largely untested cutting-edge tangent tech weaponry in his vengeful quest sends him out of control, a menace to foe and friend alike.

If you enjoyed Phenonmenons: Every Human Creature, the shared-world superhero anthology published earlier this year by Crazy 8 Press, then you should seriously consider supporting the second anthology in the series, Phenomenons: Season of Darkness, currently crowdfunding on the Starter that Kicks. Former DC Comics Star Trek editor, longtime Trek novelist, and author of Star Trek: The Complete Unauthorized History Robert Greenberger has put together a third pulp anthology, Thrilling Adventure Yarns 2022, which has just successfully funded on Kickstarter! The anthology will feature a whole mess of pulp stories by some great authors, including the following Trek prose stylists:
  • Greg Cox (The Eugenics Wars)
  • Peter David (New Frontier)
  • Keith R.A. DeCandido (Articles of the Federation)
  • Michael Jan Friedman (TNG: Death in Winter)
  • David Gerrold ("The Trouble with Tribbles")
  • Glenn Hauman (SCE: Oaths)
  • Paul Kupperberg (SCE: Sargasso Sector)
  • Aaron Rosenberg (SCE: Collective Hindsight)
  • Geoffrey Thorne (Titan: Sword of Damocles)
Plus there's a new story by Doc Savage creator Lester Dent, and tales by best-selling authors Raymond Benson, Jody Lynn Nye, Jean Rabe, pulp master Will Murray, comics artist Bart Sears & Michelle Sears, veteran comics writer and screenwriter Mark Verheiden, plus Russ Colchamiro, Kathleen O. David, Lucienne Diver, Mary Fan, Glenn Hauman, Jenifer Purcell Rosenberg, Caitlin Rozakis, and Hildy Silverman.

And if we hit our stretch goals, we can add Trek novelist and screenwriter Diane Duane, and award-winning authors Alex Segura, Steven Savile, and Lawrence Watt-Evans!

The anthology will include science fiction, sword-and-sorcery, two-fisted tales, Westerns, and more, including my own story "Ticonderoga Beck and the Stalwart Squad."

So check it out!

Speaking of THRILLING ADVENTURES YARNS 2022, I can report that my contribution is a sword-and-sorcery tale titled "A Slayer in the Sanctuary" and involves a barbarian swordswoman who finds herself entangled in dangerous political intrigues . . . . .

Now it can be told: I have another new sword-and-sorcery story in the next issue of WEIRD TALES, coming out soon.

I'm particularly chuffed about this because . . . WEIRD TALES!

With all due to respect to AMAZING and ASTOUNDING and the other vintage pulp magazines of yore, I've always been a WEIRD TALES guy at heart. I grew up on Conan and Cthulhu and Jirel of Joiry and the like, so I'm unduly pleased to finally be able to say I wrote for WEIRD TALES -- by Crom!
