Very cool. I'll have to remember to consult that when I read the book.

Re: A Choice Of Catastrophes review thread

(I do hope I didn't forget anybody!)

Next novel I hope you have a few more, um, animated crew members. ;) :bolian:

I wanted Lieutenant Kologwe to be one of the female security officers in "The Lorelei Signal" but Michael vetoed that because she didn't match his vision of the character. The Class-G shuttle (the Hofstadter), though, I imagine as being one of the bulkier shuttles sometimes seen in the animated series, like the NCC-1701/4 in "Mudd's Passion."

Actually, that did come across in the description of the hanger deck. ;)

Then you'll enjoy DTI: Forgotten History.

Squeee.

Been catching up on ST novels from my sick bed this week: "A Choice of Catastrophes", "Inception" and "Cast No Shadow" were closer to the night stand than the first "DTI", but hopefully soooon. I happened to notice on Memory Beta that there's a female Rhaandarite in "Watching the Clock". Cool!

Re: A Choice Of Catastrophes review thread

Finished it earlier this weekend. Had a few problems with the way McCoy's flashbacks were written at first, but at the end I think it worked. Overall a really good standalone TOS tale which felt like an ensemble story despite the focus on MCCoy. Pocket definitely should let Michael and Steve write more novels. :)

Recently finished it, a link to the review I wrote is in my signature. Basically, I enjoyed it for the most part. A fun stand-alone story about one of my favorite characters!

Re: A Choice Of Catastrophes review thread

Good book. Pacing was a little strange, but interesting. I liked the sort of Lost-esque feel of the plot with how the three separate groups (the ship, the two shuttlecraft crews) are all working towards resolving the same problem on their own. It starts as a routine planetary survey and by the end all three groups are not where you'd think they'd be. The slaver plot development was a nice surprise.

McCoy's hallucinations badgering him for so long did get a little tiresome before the inevitable realization that something was wrong. I did like his flashbacks written in the present tense.

Thanks for the comments, folks. The main thing I have learned from writing a novel is that pacing is hard.

I should give credit where it is due, Kertrats-- we borrowed from Christopher Bennett in attributing telepathy to quantum entanglement. (I believe he introduced the notion in The Buried Age.) But I was happy to try to make some sense of "duotronic"!

Sxottlan, I am glad you were tolerant of our attempt to be "literary"!

Rather than start another thread, I thought I'd resurrect this one.

Just read A Choice of Catastrophes over the last three days. Yes, I'm a bit behind on my Trek reading.

I know it isn't anything like a hard-and-fast rule, but the omniscient sections came across as "telling" rather than "showing." It knocked me out of the narrative. There were a couple times where I felt like I was reading the outline, rather than the finished novel. It wasn't egregious, but I did notice it. And, despite being fairly short, it has too many battles and fight scenes for my taste. I recognize my taste is not universal, so I'm only giving my reactions.

I gave it an "Average" rating, which is a solid rating, as far as I'm concerned. Good work, and I hope you get the opportunity one day to write another Trek novel.
