The Class-G shuttle (the Hofstadter), though, I imagine as being one of the bulkier shuttles sometimes seen in the animated series, like the NCC-1701/4 in "Mudd's Passion."

Then you'll enjoy DTI: Forgotten History.
Recently finished it, a link to the review I wrote is in my signature. Basically, I enjoyed it for the most part. A fun stand-alone story about one of my favorite characters!
Good book. Pacing was a little strange, but interesting. I liked the sort of Lost-esque feel of the plot with how the three separate groups (the ship, the two shuttlecraft crews) are all working towards resolving the same problem on their own. It starts as a routine planetary survey and by the end all three groups are not where you'd think they'd be. The slaver plot development was a nice surprise.
McCoy's hallucinations badgering him for so long did get a little tiresome before the inevitable realization that something was wrong. I did like his flashbacks written in the present tense.
