If they're trying to reboot the franchise, it would be a mistake to use anything other than the Enterprise.

I sincerely doubt if it'll be the same crew or even the same Enterprise as the ones in the movies, but I'm almost certain that it's going to be an Enterprise.
I think producers had proven they can create a series which doesn't have to have the name Enterprise in it. It just needs the basic training wheels of Star Trek and allow them to balance themselves as they ride.

Yes, and how well did those do compared to TOS or TNG? Oh yeah, not very. (And no, DS9 did nowhere near as well as TNG despite the fan love.)

Sure, you have Enterprise itself to prove that it's not a guarantee of success, but that doesn't change anything. You're trying to sell the product to a whole new generation of people, the vast majority of whom have almost assuredly never seen more than a couple of episodes of any of the older series except in passing. They're also almost assuredly going to rely on the movies, too, meaning the further they distance themselves from that, the less likely it's going to do its intended job.

I guarantee that if there's a starship involved, it'll be an Enterprise. If not, the show itself will be closely related to the movies in some fashion.

Yep. You got me there, Crow T. Robot. I stand corrected. I think the producers should still try if it's in the JJverse to make a version of Trek where the crew can go on their own and separate from the movies. I'm we'll get more news after the release of Beyond.

On your last statement, I do agree. The new show will do its best -- within whatever legal restrictions apply to the franchise being split between two companies -- to follow the films. I continue to disagree about the Enterprise, but I guess we'll have to wait to see which of us is correct. I wager 10,000 quatloos for my position. :)

I hope they do a total reboot of any characters, but not the basic background or setting. So the Federation, Klingons, and others are there and the basic concepts are there, but there's no Kirk or Worf or Janeway anywhere.

Also, and I know this will never happen, but I'd like to see a show more about the service of Starfleet rather than a particular set of characters or a particular ship. Starfleet has many ships, I would enjoy seeing it start out with what would have been an Oberth class ship, called something else in the new show with a new design, exploring new worlds, but not really having to stay with them. Maybe they run into trouble and get destroyed in episode 3 and the main ship of the series picks up from there, but then we switch back to other situations. I hate when they have every other ship be a redshirt ship, but I don't want a story where they are afraid of killing someone/thing because space is dangerous. And I'd really like to explore more of the other races that weren't, like Gorn, Tholians, Tellerites and many others, as well as meeting new ones.

I'd also like a lot more integrated Starfleet from the beginning and have more of the other peoples beside the Humans. Medusan navigator would be neat.

And another thing, I'd like individual episodes, but I'd like something that happens in an episode to not be totally forgotten, especially when it's a real setting altering event. For Example: This Side of Paradise, a cure all for just about every disease is found and never used or mentioned again especially when it was the central theme of the plot of a later episode, like Omega Glory or even Insurrection. I, Mudd there is a planet of fairly advanced androids found and they are never mentioned again, especially when Data is curious about being the only Android around. They tried one time to do something with the warp 5 speed limit but it was lame and forgotten really fast.

So, continuity with previous shows, not that important but nice, continuity with itself, very important.

The new series doesn't necessarily need to be on an enterprise, after all one of the most successful trek movies and most remembered by casual audiences was TVH in which the enterprise (and the A) had little more than a cameo appearance.
