Thoughts about a TOS revival with AI technology

Damn! Chalk up another case of TOS remaining relevant with “The Ultimate Computer.” M5 lives.
Sort of...

Didn't this episode drop the ball on answering its central question? Can computers take over for men? There's a cop out in the plot then congratulations all around.

So the questions posed, the performances, all good. The solution, not.

Frankly, TMP, TNG and to a greater degree DSC and Picard have all treated AI questions with more maturity, aplomb than TOS ever did.

To feed the belief that the past is still superior to the present.
Some things in the past are better though it depends on who's judging them.

Most things are better now but still highly imprefect.

So on a sliding scale of betterness or at least appropriateness to 2024, I'd give something like SNW high marks. It's not as groundbreaking as TOS but it could be a better show.

Oh, I agree. I think there is always a mixed bag when looking at the past but the trend, especially with Trek, is to attempt to latch on to the "groundbreaking" nature of TOS while ignoring all the other contextual factors that allowed it to be so. SNW is fantastic, and even has some good commentary in some episodes.

But, I think the desire to recreate the past rests solidly in the desire that TOS was peak and to reclaim that past glory is the only way to make Trek successful again, in broad strokes.

You want to drive ‘a 66 Mustang to new places. You want to have new experiences in the house you lived in in 1966. You want to see new episodes of a show you watched in 1966.

Are you trying to relive your past? Probably. But the illusion of a perpetual past is mollifying when living in an uncertain future, so there is that, too.

A security blanket for adults?

Well, that's a different way of saying that at any given moment in time there are good things and there are bad things. That's inarguable.
