I could actually see Forbidden Planet redone as a miniseries.

Forbidden Planet was based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, as I recall.

Not officially, though. There's no credit in "Forbidden Planet" for Shakespeare. The parallels are pretty obvious, though, and the writers and producers probably confirmed "The Tempest" as the source material later on. IMDb lists him as "uncredited".

Yeah, the only article I could find for that was this one, from a site I've never heard of from 2016 announcing the remake for the summer of 2019. So, yeah.

Also, the plot of "Jaws" wasn't what made it stand out. There were a lot of animal horror flicks back then, and even more since then. Animal horror flicks using sharks have even become somewhat of their own subgenre, so conceptwise there are a lot of spiritual remakes of "Jaws". What made "Jaws" stand out was the focus on the human characters.

Jaws is another really silly movie to reboot in an era where killing a shark would be seen as animal cruelty and more of the audience will know Jaws isn’t acting like a real shark.

New Jack City is in the works to be remade. Clearly another instance where they just want the name recognition for something that will turn out significantly inferior, like Point Break and Total Recall.

I don't believe there would have been any legal requirement to have credited works in the public domain.

Which is why I'm sure the people involved spoke freely of it. In any event, MGM didn't quite draw attention to the fact that the movie was based on a Shakespeare play. They even had a "Based on a story by" credit for the writers of the first draft "Fatal Planet", but no mention of Shakespeare.

You’re seriously comparing changing knowledge about sharks and updated views on animal cruelty to changes in cell phone a availability?

Shark attack movies are seen as stupid guilty pleasure B movies now. Any new Jaws remake would be approached with the seriousness people approached Sharknado with. People will watch it, but they will watch it expecting to laugh at it.

I know it would be an expensive undertaking, but I'd love to see Horatio Hornblower redone. Ioan Gruffud is old enough to play Admiral Pellew, now.

You know, a Stargate continuation or even a reboot is my wet dream, but the important question is when the hell are we getting new fucking SeaQuest?
