Very good series. Avoid the last couple seasons.

I'd go further and suggest avoiding all the conspiracy arc episodes. I loved the monster of the week, "things" like Tooms especially.

I'd suggest not accepting this suggestion. The conspiracy/Mythology episodes were usually among the best during the first 5 and a half seasons of the show. Duane Berry/Ascension, One Breath, Anasazi/The Blessing Way/Paper Clip, Nisei/731, Gethsemane/Redux 1/2, Patient X/The Red and the Black, Two Fathers/One Son, those were some of the best, most moving and most entertaining drama the show has produced. Whether the story adds up in the end - eh, so what?

As for the last couple of seasons - as I said, they're much better than season 7. Although that's not saying much.

I thought season 8 breathed new life into the show. It was season 9 that was pretty crappy.

Too bad there was never an episode where Scully discovered that Mulder was calling himself "Red Shoes" and women were mailing him erotic stories of themselves.

And I say watch the entire series and make up your own mind. Personally, I thought season eight was the best year of the show, breathing new life into The X-Files that it gravely needed. Then season nine happened, but YMMV.

I'm not a huge fan of the last two seasons, but they gave us a few classics. Via Negativa reminds me of some unsettling experiences I've had. Badlaa has a really visceral effect on most viewers. Improbable, written and directed by CC, was just a revelation.

I agree as well. The only thing that really bugs me about the last 2 seasons is the lack of David Duchovny, but even with him absent, the episodes themselves are worth watching.

Too right. I was saying that about LOST during S1. That the deep multilayered mystery show that set the mark before LOST was the X-Files. Before that, Twin Peaks.

While the story definitely does get convoluted, it's actually really amazing how well-structured it is when you watch the mythology shows back to back. In the end, there really aren't that many unanswered questions.

Well, the "mythology" of the X-Files is based in the alien/UFO storyline introduced in the beginning of the show. You don't really need to keep track of them or anything; you'll know them when you see them. The mythology isn't very involved in Season 1, but it definitely becomes very important as the show goes on.

In retrospect, I wish the show had been cancelled after the first season. I think it would still be a fan favorite cult classic. Instead, it got popular, then really popular, then part of pop-culture -- then spectacularly burned out.

It's a good show, and there are good episodes all throughout the series, but the longer the show stayed on the air and more involving the mytharc became and...

the less I became interested. X-Files, to me, was at its best in season one, when it was an hour long roller coaster ride you popped popcorn for and expected nothing more than to be thrilled and entertained.

Awesome! I'm very excited about this series. First time I've been this excited about a show in a while, especially since I come in essentially spoiler free (I know what happens to Mulder eventually, like the TS). And at less than $20 per season, that's very exciting.

The episode where Mulder finds some answers regarding his sister is one of the most touching and saddest moments I've watched. The music is simply dazzling and it kills me watching it.

I also never watched the show when it was originally broadcast, but rather bought all the seasons together on DVD a few years back and watched them all the way through -- about three times, IIRC.

It was an amazing ride, and I didn't want to let it go. Great characters, good writing and production.
