The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

Yeah if there is a similarity it’s barely noticeable. It’s basically just the posture of the photo. Shanks has more hair.

They look similar enough for the fun jokes, but not similar enough to be like brothers.

The human species probably all did come from 5,000-15,000 people about 70,000 years ago when the last super volcano eruption was. All people of the same ethnic background look the same. I have at least 20 doppelgangers, hell one even has the same accent as me and that was creepy.

There are other photos where it comes across a little more, but it's mostly just that they're both white guys with symmetrical faces. It's not like they're the cast of Forbidden Planet, where I can never tell who is who by sight.

Hey, my own brother barely looks anything like me and I've had multiple people think we're identical twins. Some people just seem to see a resemblance where there isn't one.

Or any gay club/event not in a major city...

Kind of like if the dress was blue and gold or black and pink or whatever that thing was.

@bigdaddy

I was thinking more along the lines of why you don't rush a vaccine and the debate we are having now regarding treatments and vaccines. I never said Covid was the flu because yeah it's worse.
You can't really rush a vaccine, it takes a lot of studying the virus, and testing to actually find one that works and is safe.

Yes but like I said with Beckett doing Ancient gene therapy, sometimes you do a few tests on mice and then got right to humans. Works out fine if it's a TV show plot. :)

I got into an argument with a guy online who is like 'All they need to do is plug in the RNA of the SARS-Cov 2 into a computer and boom you have a vaccine. Should only take a few weeks'. Yeah, sure, it took 3-6 weeks to get the 80 trials that they are testing right now, but they need to test them for quiet awhile to see if they work and are safe!

People are stupid.

Just so we're clear I've been agreeing with you all this time. What I was trying to say was you had Beckett and Perna make this vaccine and the chancellor jumped at it's first time success and started using it on the entire population, killing 50% of those inoculated. This episode shows why what the Chancellor did was a very bad idea and I loved how Beckett reacted to it, being the medical professional he was. However, 96% were in favor of the inoculation because of the neverending fear of the wraith despite the risks. I'm in favor of making sure success is assured the first time rather than rushing everything when you don't need to.

I know. I've been saying that if we lived on a Wraith food planet where the Wraith kill 98% of the population. Or if we lived in the 12 Monkeys universe where 99.7% of the population dies, I think we would be looking at Covid vaccines a lot differently. I probably would agree to take the risks too. You can't judge a different world because they have different rules.

I wish some of these characters would talk a little slower, like Rodney.
Funny you should say that...

That's outstanding.

Underground (SG: A)

I finally got to Colm Meaney's episode of SG: A. I'm sensing a theme so far in this series. The wraith has caused a lot of fear and deception amongst the cultures we've seen so far and the Genii are not any different. On the outside, they are a simple folk. On the inside they are conniving and treacherous and will do anything to get ahead. I loved that ending when there is a stand off after the mission (infiltrating a Wraith ship, this early in the series. Bold move) and John decloaks the two jumpers. I'm thinking John is learning a lot so far. Also, there are 21 Wraith Ships in their quadrant and 60 or more around Pegasus colony. Again, this show is revealing stuff at a really nice pace. I do agree with Dr. Weir though in terms of negotiating. For being such a strong negotiator in New Order, I almost feel like the writers are afraid to use her here for what she is good at. I also really hope she goes on a mission or two as this series moves on. Another great episode in a strong start to this series so far.

By the way, the Genii which are introduced in this episode are a really good recurring opposition for Atlantis. And I think what makes them so good as "villains" is that they are humans like our main characters but who are desperate and willing to use sneaky tactics to defend themselves against the Wraith. They are really just doing what they think is necessary to ensure the survival of their people. But the show does use the Genii really well. And there are some excellent episodes with the Genii and one Genii in particular who is a recurring nemesis for Sheperd.

I was strolling through the episode list and there are some great episodes in Atlantis first season and this one is one of them.

Sacrifices (SG-1)

This episode was decent, but I kinda felt there was too many storylines happening at once. You had R'yac and Kar'yn's wedding, Teal'c and Ishta's relationship/struggles with Meloc, and the relocation, among other things. The stuff with R'yac and Kar'yn was ok, but I feel like that storyline is played out in any wedding type story and I wish shows would change it up a bit. Considering the Jaffa are a warrior race, I saw a little of the DS9 episode in this storyline, where Teal'c questions if R'yac is ready to be married and we get this self discovery, only for the father to say he was wrong in the end. The best storyline was Teal'c and Ishta, and their battle with Meloc. It allowed them to explore their relationship and I will say the same thing I said about Birthright. Jolene Blalock is a great actress who I wish had more roles in her career. I think I remember reading on IMDB that her last role was in 2017 but she should have had a starring role in another series. Anyway, I love that they killed Meloc off and it really does seem like Ba'al is being set up as the main season villain. This stuff with the Goa'uld has to end eventually.

If I remember correctly, Blalock married some corporate executive. Probably why she hasn't done conventions or acted.

(She's one of the only leads of a STAR TREK series I haven't met yet or got an autograph. I want to meet her.)

So, around the time season seven of Stargate was airing, there was a meme (we didn't call them memes, then, but it was a meme) that Ben Browder and Michael Shanks looked the same. I feel like there were some publicity photos that unintentionally played up the resemblance, around that time Shanks was showing off that he'd been spending more time at the gym (seriously, there are some shots in the season 7 press kit where Daniel, the team nerd, has bigger arms than Teal'c, the team muscle), not wearing the Daniel glasses as much, both had shorter haircuts and were wearing black t-shirts...

Ah, good, found it! This comparison originally came from a Farscape fan site in the early 2000s.

So, there were a lot of merry jokes once we found out that Browder was joining SG-1, which the writers slipped into a couple episodes. Personally, I don't think they look that similar, so if I hadn't known about the memes, the best line in the season 9 opener would've gone right over my head.
The supposed resemblance between the two even played a part in the producers making a decision requiring Shanks to grow a beard for the first few episodes of season 9 to minimize the resemblance between he and Browder. Shanks hated the beard and ended up shaving it off between episodes and telling everyone "deal with it."

Have you met Brooks? As far as I know Brooks and Blalock are the only two that have completely put Trek past them.
