The Stargate Franchise - A First Timer's Watchthrough

I think I actually rented that one and played it a little bit back in the day. At the I knew nothing about rap so I had no idea who any of the characters were, I just thought it looked like a fun game.

Childhood's End (SG: A)

This was was just ok for me. I guess because I watched an episode of SG-1 earlier today about a zealot who refuses to have his mind changed because of new information, to see the end of this episode where that Aeries kid doesn't listen to reason and is so hell-bent on continuing the sacrifices feels a tad repetitive. Also, I'm starting to see why McKay is liked. He has some amazing one liners, like calling the ZPM an older version of windows. I had to rewind it to be sure I heard what he said, and I watch with the subtitles on. That was a great line. However, who the hell does he think he is stealing a ZPM that is used as a defense shield for this world. I kinda wish Sheppard gave hip a good punch to the face for that. You can't go to another planet and start stealing technology. I did like his relationship with the two young kids though. It was a cute relationship. Also I was a little confused about the Wraith and just read the plot for Rising to be sure. If the Wraith has just awoken centuries after their battle with the Ancients, then they have not been attacking that village for generations. Of course maybe I have the timeline a little confused but I was a little iffy on that line.

From what I recall McKay's idea is they would take the device and bring the kids to Atlantis were they would be safe but in reality he didn't respect that they weren't just going to leave their home for some newcomers or that Atlantis itself is going to be automatically safer either.

Repetitive is exactly Stargate. There are a lot of those moments. The episodes are still fun, but repetitive at times.

Atlantis was sunk 10,000 years ago. That's when the battle with the Wraith were, and the Ancients fled the city and sank it. The Wraith were mainly asleep for 5 generations they said in Rising. But some of them aren't awake at the same time, so there are smaller feedings. Jack 2.0 (I guess his name is Shepard) woke ALL of the Wraith up so now they have to feed more than normal.

Affinity (SG-1)

This episode felt very soap opera to me, but it had Erica Durance in it and while I don't watch Supergirl, she's in Supergirl. She was pretty good as Krista here, and I enjoyed seeing Teal'c out of the base having a life somewhere else. However, this episode felt pretty cliched. You had the girl in distress, the violent boyfriend, the snooping neighbor, and according to the plot I read after watching, it was the girl who killed the boyfriend in self defense. That wasn't entirely made clear in this episode. Also, Sam says yes to Pete's proposal and I'm asking, why? They don't have much chemistry (We barely see Pete anyway) and I really wish there wasn't the rule of two collegues (especially when one serves under the other) in the military seeing each other, even if I understand why. Jack and Sam have amazing chemistry.

These are the days or our Stargate lives...

But one thing unites all fans of Stargate, no one likes Pete.
Pete was played by David DeLuise the brother of producer / writer of SG-1 Peter DeLuise, so we know how he got the job. Otherwise they would have picked ANY other guy on the planet to throw at Sam.

Poisoning The Well (SG: A)

Goodbye Steve. We hardly knew ye, but I think he was a much better character in the little time he was in than someone like Teyla at the moment. I really want to like Teyla, but I keep wondering if they should have gotten another actress. Anyway, this episode was very meaty, and we got a lot of Carson which was great. I really like Carson, especially sticking to his medical standards even if the drug was working. It's kind of interesting how this episode feels timely to today. The Hoffans were desperate for a drug to use as a defense against the Wraith that they were even willing to sacrifice half the population to get that drug to the people. Isn't that unlike what is happening today and trying to find a vaccine towards Covid 19. You have to run so many tests that it takes a long time to make sure that vaccine is safe, which is why we keep hearing about the 18 months, yet I wonder how we as a society will be and react even a month or two from now if we would react to anything just to make the Virus go away.

I also liked learning more about the Wraith and confirming what @bigdaddy said about how Shepard woke up everyone and how they are extremely patient. If there is one thing Atlantis is doing really well at currently, it's the pace of their various reveals, especially for the main villains. I said they were scary after Rising, but learning more about them as I go, I'm actually starting to like them as the scary villains the show wants them to be.

I think the entire male DeLuise clan was in STARGATE.

Dom as Urgo. Michael as Nick Marlowe from "WORMHOLE X-TREME". David as Pete. Peter has been all sorts of walk-ons, and as young Urgo.

Even Peter's wife was in "THE OTHER SIDE".

Covenant (SG-1)

I think this episode might have cleared up some confusions I had regarding the end of Affinity, namely who were those guys who wanted the Goa'uld translation. We're introduced to another Rouge (Or is it the same one) NID section called The Trust, who is going out of their way to make sure the Stargate program remains a secret. I liked Caulson in this episode, his backstory with Sam, and the scenes where he and Sam go through the Stargate were really nice. I also appreciated seeing Thor again, and Jack always has some witty comments, even from behind the desk.

One thing I've noticed about Season 8 is it really does feel different than all the other seasons so far and a lot of it is it's very earth based. I guess this is what happens when you make your lead the new leader of Cheyanne Mountain, but there are times when I do feel like the show is called Stargate but it's not really about "Stargate". We haven't seen the Jaffa or Tok'ra in a long while, we're getting more SGC episodes, which is good, like Avatar, and everything about this season feels different. That's not a bad thing. I'm actually enjoying Season 8 more than Season 7 at this point (It's still early) but it's just an observation. Also, I was reading some of the synopsis's coming up and there is an episode were we do see Claudia Black for the first time. Considering how she played my favorite character in all of Sci FI ever, I can't wait to see her (And Browder).

By the way, I heard something about Stargate/Farscape Memes? I know 200 is in Season 10, but pretty soon the two stars of Farscape are going to be regulars on SG-1. I'm looking forward to all the Farscape Crossover ideas I can get. :)

Yes, the Wraith were awakened by the events in Rising. The Wraith were in hibernation for millenia before that, since the Ancients left Atlantis and returned to Earth. If I am remembering the episode correctly, the children think that suicide at a certain age is keeping the Wraith away but that is just superstition. They did not know about the shield and they did not know about the Wraith being in hibernation. They mistakenly thought that the reason the Wraith stayed away was because of their suicide ritual when it was not. What was really keeping the wraith away was the shield powered by the ZPM. It's only when McKay tries to steal the ZPM and deactivates the shield that the Wraith who are now awake as a result of Rising, are able to attack the planet again.

When writing the season, Covenant was meant to be before Affinity, thus why Covenant seems to introduce the Trust while they are known in Affinity. For some reason, a decision was made at the last minute to have Affinity air first.

Anyway, the Trust are the result of all rogue elements being purged from the NID and forming their own organization. The NID themselves are from this point onward, completely legitimate with the Trust now conducting the shady evil things.

Covid death rate is maybe 5 times more than the flu, like .5% and not 95% like a Wraith feast.

But the virus is like the Wraith in one huge way, neither are 100% evil, they are living things. The virus wants to spread and live as that's what all life wants. Look at what humans have done in the last 30-40 years, killed off 27% of bugs, 40-60% of all wildlife, just in less than 50 years. We are more evil than covid, or the Wraith. We did it for no reason at all, the Wraith are just eating. Which is why they are better than the Gouald. One wanted to play god, one just wants to eat. Makes for much better villains.

Watching later SG-1 is a lot of 'Where is the Stargate?', it wasn't because Jack was leader, it was for budget control. Filming 'on Earth' is cheaper than 'off world'. In order to do big things later on they needed to save money. Stargate does big things really well.

Claudia Black is one of the best things to happen to Stargate which is why it's a shame there wasn't an 11th season. She has one of my favorite lines ever in the whole show and her chemistry with the cast is stunning. It's amazing how well Stargate adopted to change, they handled it well. Unlike Star Trek which never changed or handled things very poorly. Jack as base commander works really well. Adding new people like Claudia Black, she fits in right away. Even Hammond leaving to take over in DC fits in well.

@bigdaddy

I was thinking more along the lines of why you don't rush a vaccine and the debate we are having now regarding treatments and vaccines. I never said Covid was the flu because yeah it's worse.

I know what you meant, I'm just saying giving people an anti Wraith shot that they have a 50/50 shot living would be better to those people than the Wraith harvesting them. You can't really compare covid vaccine to Wraith 'vaccine'. Even if the wraith vaccine worked the wraith would just murder everyone.

Plus as Becket said in the third episode of Atlantis, they can do more a galaxy away without the FDA looking down on them. :)

@tomalak301 When you get to the last 5 episodes of season 8, namely "The Reckoning Part 1 & 2", "Threads" and "Moebius Part 1 & 2", you will understand the cost saving measures earlier in the season. :)

Yet again, at least a few of the scripts were rejects from earlier seasons because they always plan on the last season being the last and then get unexpected pick up. This saves writers time to plan out the season. I'm more critical of Stargate more than most fans, but they stick the landing for the most part. Even Moebius, which I don't like that much, sticks the ending perfectly. You will not be disappointed by your current Stargate seasons.

So, around the time season seven of Stargate was airing, there was a meme (we didn't call them memes, then, but it was a meme) that Ben Browder and Michael Shanks looked the same. I feel like there were some publicity photos that unintentionally played up the resemblance, around that time Shanks was showing off that he'd been spending more time at the gym (seriously, there are some shots in the season 7 press kit where Daniel, the team nerd, has bigger arms than Teal'c, the team muscle), not wearing the Daniel glasses as much, both had shorter haircuts and were wearing black t-shirts...

Ah, good, found it! This comparison originally came from a Farscape fan site in the early 2000s.

So, there were a lot of merry jokes once we found out that Browder was joining SG-1, which the writers slipped into a couple episodes. Personally, I don't think they look that similar, so if I hadn't known about the memes, the best line in the season 9 opener would've gone right over my head.
